- Storm system to bring rain and embedded thunderstorms, in
  addition to a wintry mix Tuesday night. Activity will quickly
  transition to snow into early Wednesday as temperatures fall
  and winds increase. Combination of blowing snow and icy
  conditions due to freezing rain and flash freeze potential
  will make for hazardous travel during the Wednesday morning
  commute.

  early Thursday, especially across eastern upper.

Issued at 959 PM EST Mon Feb 26 2024

Inherited forecast in excellent shape with no meaningful changes
required. Big story is the warm temperatures, with maturing
return flow helping keep parts of northwest lower in the upper
40s and lower 50s this evening. Really don't expect
temperatures to cool at all in this region, with temperatures
likely steadily warming further north and east with time. Rather
remarkable for the end of February. That return flow and plume
of elevated instability may drive a few showers/non-severe
thunderstorms very late tonight for areas closer to Saginaw Bay.
Expect dry conditions elsewhere, with perhaps an expanding
stratus deck and some mist/light fog Tuesday morning as the low
levels continue to moisten.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Pattern Synopsis:

Troughing will continue to lift over the northeast portion of the
continent as subtle ridging overhead slides eastward. Meanwhile,
expansive troughing will dig across the western CONUS through
tonight. Strong ascent aloft will help deepen a cyclone over the
northern Great Plains/Midwest and push surface high pressure well
east of the Great Lakes by Tuesday morning.

Forecast Details:

Mainly quiet weather is expected across northern Michigan through
the remainder of today as temperatures continue to warm well into
the 40s and low 50s south of the bridge. Some areas south of Grand
Traverse Bay, such as Manistee and Frankfort, look to warm into the
mid 50s over the next few hours. The primary focus for the period is
the slight chance for a few thunderstorms near Saginaw Bay later
tonight into early Tuesday morning. It's not too often that we are
discussing thunderstorm potential in late February, but a plume of
elevated instability on the order of 1,000-1,500 J/kg MUCAPE will
lift over northern lower overnight, providing ample buoyancy aloft
to support thunderstorms. The primary question will be
initiation/coverage across the southeast portion of our CWA. While a
few storms near Saginaw Bay certainly cannot be ruled out,
confidence is higher in storm formation/coverage across the Thumb
than north of Saginaw Bay.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Pattern Synopsis and Forecast:

Mid level short wave moves through early on Tuesday within an
environment of elevated instability. Consequently, a slight chance
for a few showers or thunderstorms will be possible, mainly
southeast portions of the area. Otherwise, southwest flow aloft will
promote extensive warming with record temperatures likely. Upper
trough and sfc low begin to lift into northern Michigan overnight
Tuesday with precipitation overspreading the area and gusty winds.
Cold air mass pushes in from the northwest into Wednesday morning
resulting in a change over from rain or freezing rain to snow.
Trough pushes through and to the east Wednesday afternoon and into
Thursday with cold northwest flow and lake effect snow showers.
Several inches of snow likely across portions of the UP from
late Tuesday night into Thursday morning.

Primary Forecast Concerns:

Weak impulse aloft along with steepening mid level lapse rates will
result in elevated instability and the chance for a few showers and
thunderstorms early on Tuesday. Pretty low confidence overall but
best chance will be across southeast portions of the region, Gladwin
county and vicinity. Otherwise, southwest winds aloft will allow for
record warmth across a good chunk of northern Michigan. Low 60s
likely away from the immediate coast in northwest lower.

Heading into the evening and overnight hrs, sfc low begins to move
into the region from the south. Scattered showers and thundershowers
likely, beginning as a wintry mix farther north. Looking at several
pieces of guidance, appears the best corridor of elevated instabilty
will be once again across southeast portions of northern lower
Michigan, roughly ~Manistee-Grayling-Alpena southeast. Thus, if any
robust updrafts were to develop within this environment, coupled
with the shear profiles ~30-40 kts 0-6km, this could support a
stronger storm or two. At this time, CAM models do not shows a ton
of support for this but definitely worth watching.

Tuesday night into early Wednesday as cold air rushes in from the
northwest. Wintry mix of precipitation will transition to snow as a
result. Admittedly a tricky freezing rain fcst, although based on
latest guidance think light accumulations possible across northwest
lower and into eastern upper, but should quickly transition to snow.
Currently have a couple of hundredths of freezing rain, enough to
make things slick, especially as temperatures crash and the
potential for a flash freeze exists. Thus, slick and hazardous
travel likely Wednesday morning due to the combination of icy
roadways (freezing rain & flash freeze) and low visibility from
accumulating, blowing snow. As for the snow, synoptic system could
produce a couple to several inches in the E UP, with a couple of
inches west of I-75 in northern lower, along with wind gusts of 30
to 40 mph. Calling for a general 2-4" possible with the first round
of snow west of I-75, then...see next paragraph for more information
on lake effect transition.

Activity will transition to more lake effect banded snow sometime
Wednesday afternoon-overnight in the traditional northwest snow
belts. Progged fcst soundings show a saturated boundary layer [and
DGZ] up to ~800 mb (actually up in the UP closer to 700 mb), 850 mb
temps -15 to -20C, and blustery northwest lower level winds. This
environment suggests the potential for pretty decent lake effect
snow, mainly for eastern upper, with a several additional inches
possible. If you consider synoptic and lake effect, advisory level
snows look likely for eastern upper. This matches up with some of
the ensemble probabilities for 3+ inches of snow (50-80%+), which is
likely a little underdone due to the coarser resolution of the ENS.
Lake effect will diminish during the day on Thursday with
temperatures around freezing.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Pattern Synopsis and Forecast:

Generally dry Thursday night through Sunday with heights/ridging
steadily increasing through the period. Good agreement in model
guidance, (deterministic and ensemble guidance), that a potent upper
level trough and subsequent sfc cyclone will move well to our north
and west into early next week. Consequently, sfc temperatures will
warm with the potential for the warmest temperatures of the year
come next Sunday into Monday. For example, current NBM percentiles
currently show a most likely range between 63-69 degrees in Gaylord
next Monday. Frontal boundary associated with this system will move
through early next week resulting in more active weather and cooler
temperatures.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z WEDNESDAY/...
VFR conditions with just some passing high and mid level clouds
through early this morning. Expect current corridor of low
level wind shear to end shortly. Band of MVFR producing cigs
and possibly some mist may sweep northeast across the region
later this morning. Confidence in this occurring remains low.
Any mist/low clouds should gradually mixing out during the
afternoon. Relative light winds early this morning will increase
out of the south and southwest later today.

.MARINE...
Small craft advisory winds and waves are expected to continue over
all northern Great Lakes nearshores into tonight. Winds/waves look
diminish below criteria over Whitefish Bay and the St. Marys River
around midnight tonight with other nearshore zones dropping below
advisory thresholds late tonight/early Tuesday morning. Looking
ahead, gale force wind gusts are expected across many nearshore
waters Tuesday night through Wednesday, perhaps lasting through
Wednesday night over portions of Lake Huron.
