.SYNOPSIS...
An approaching clipper low will bring rounds of rain and snow
showers across the region into this evening. A strong cold front
will cross the region this afternoon and evening, bringing
colder and blustery conditions tonight through Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
.UPDATE...As of 110 PM EDT, a clipper system and cold front will
cross the region into the evening hours. In addition, a potent
upper-level shortwave will round the base of the upper trough
and take on a negative tilt. Strong forcing along and ahead of
the front will result in rounds of precipitation into this
evening. Steep low and mid-level lapse rates could result in a
convective band of precipitation as well. A rumble of thunder
cannot be ruled out. Temperatures will determine whether
precipitation falls as rain, graupel or snow or a combination of
these. Despite temperatures currently in the upper 30s to upper
40s, wet bulbing and dynamic cooling processes (with dew points
in the 20s) will cause temperatures to fall quickly along and
just behind the front. As a result, precipitation could even end
as snow in some valley areas, especially along and north of
I-90.

Additional snowfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches will be
possible across the Adirondacks, western Mohawk Valley and
eastern Catskills into this evening. A Winter Weather Advisory
will remain in effect for Herkimer and Hamilton counties until
8pm this evening. Across the spine of the southern Greens, a
quick 3 to 6 inches will be possible. In addition, snowfall
rates per latest HREF may exceed 1 inch per hour. We have
decided to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for the high terrain
in Bennington County (at and above 2000 feet) from 4pm this
afternoon to 11pm this evening. Little or no snow accumulation
is expected elsewhere.

Wind will pick up this evening in the wake of the cold front.
Wind gusts 30 to 45 mph are expected, especially from the
Mohawk Valley into the Capital Region and Berkshires.

Behind the cold front, some lake-effect snow showers are
expected, but will gradually decrease in intensity and coverage
through the overnight hours. Lows will fall into the teens and
20s.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Cold and blustery conditions continue on Thursday despite brief
ridging building overhead. Temperatures will run some 10 to 15
degrees below normal, only reaching highs in the 20s in high
terrain and 30s at lower elevations. West winds will be at their
strongest in the morning, slowly diminishing through the day
with occasional gusts over 30 mph still possible through
Thursday night. Any lingering lake-effect snow showers will
dissipate during the day. Beneath clearing skies and weakening
winds, Thursday night will be cold, with lows in the high single
digits to mid teens in high terrain and upper 10s to low 20s at
lower elevations. Colder temperatures with lighter winds will
nonetheless yield similar wind chills to Wednesday night,
between 0 and 15 degrees for most and in the single digits below
zero in the southern Adirondacks.

A more potent system looks to affect the forecast area Friday
into the weekend. A strong shortwave will rotate about the
southern flank of an upper low over Hudson Bay, passing over the
Great Lakes and St Lawrence Valley. Meanwhile, a formerly cutoff
low over the Southwest will open into the flow and track toward
the Southeast as a weak southern stream wave. To its east, a
long fetch of southerly flow over the northwestern Atlantic will
aid in advecting moisture northward into the Northeast, while
isentropic ascent ahead of the northern stream trough will
result in widespread precipitation spreading across the
Northeast from west to east beginning Friday afternoon to
evening, and continuing through Friday night before exiting to
the east later on Saturday. Following highs in the mid 20s to
low 30s in high terrain and mid 30s to mid 40s at lower
elevations, precipitation through the evening will largely be
snow outside of the warmest valley locations, continuing
overnight as temperatures dip to lows in the 20s to low 30s
across the region. With low-level flow out of the south to
southeast, and considering the marginal temperatures to the
south of I-90, the most likely location for a plowable snowfall
is expected to be the southern Adirondacks and Upper Hudson
Valley, while the southern Greens may also see light to moderate
accumulations. Diurnal heating on Saturday will see temperatures
rise into the mid 30s to mid 40s across the region, resulting in
an elevation-dependent transition to rain as the system exits
eastward.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
System exits Saturday night into Sunday with some scattered showers
exiting western New England and the mid Hudson Valley Saturday
night. Moderating cool airmass over our region Sunday as flat
northern stream upper ridging begins to build into our region Sunday
night into Monday. However, a southern stream upper closed low
offshore could back some clouds and isolated showers in the mid
Hudson Valley and NW CT Sunday into Monday. Highs Sunday in the
lower to mid 40s with 30s higher terrain.

Northern stream upper ridging builds into eastern North America
Monday and Tuesday as the southern stream closed upper low offshore
builds east and farther offshore. Upper troughing in central North
America will approach, and some southern stream upper energy will
approach our region in the southwest upper flow by Tuesday. So,
increasing warm advection and moisture advection.  Clouds will
increase and some isolated scattered showers by later Tuesday.

Highs Monday in the mid to upper 40s with around 40 higher terrain.
Highs Tuesday in the mid 40s to around 50.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A cold front will move across the eastern NY and western New
England TAF sites between 21Z/Wed to 01Z/THU with a line of
rain and snow showers. VFR conditions will lower to MVFR/IFR
conditions with the line or broken line of rain to snow showers.
Some gusty winds or graupel may occur from KALB/KPSF southward.
TEMPO groups were used to address the MVFR/IFR cigs and vsbys.
The winds may gust to 25-35 KT with the frontal passage.

VFR conditions will return shortly after or before 00Z/THU with
some sct-bkn stratocumulus or mid level clouds. The VFR
conditons will continue after 12Z/THU with sct-bkn stratocumulus
clouds in the 4-5 kft AGL.

Winds will be south/southwest 8-15 KT ahead of the cold front
and then will veer to the west at 10-20 KT with the frontal
passage with some gusts 25-35 KT. The winds shift west to
northwest tonight, and they will increase to 12 to 20 KT with
gusts to 25-30 kt. After daybreak northwest winds will be in the
14-22 KT range with gusts 30-35 KT.

Bands of rain and snow showers ahead of a cold front will limit
fire weather this afternoon into early this evening, as RH
values will be 35 to 45 percent across the region. The threat of
conditions for fire spread increase tomorrow morning into the
afternoon when much drier air filters into the region, allowing
RH values to drop as low as 30 to 40 percent outside of the
southwestern Adirondacks and western Mohawk Valley. Blustery
west to northwest winds will develop tonight and continue
through Thursday night, with gusts reaching 30 to 45 mph
Thursday afternoon. RH values remain low on Friday with much
lighter winds expected. Additional chances for precipitation are
anticipated for Friday night into the weekend.

was over Middleville, or near Herkimer moving northeast at 40 MPH.

THIS LINE OF HEAVY SNOW SHOWERS WILL BE NEAR...  Stratford around
300 PM EDT.

Snow accumulations on untreated surfaces could range from a coating
to a half inch.

This includes Interstate 90 between exits 29A and 30.
