.SYNOPSIS...
A moisture rich and potent storm system will track near New
York City overnight and into New England Sunday. This storm
will bring rain for lower elevations and heavy, wet snow for
higher elevations north of Albany. Gusty winds will also occur
this evening through Sunday morning, with snow showers and
continued windy conditions lasting Sunday afternoon into Monday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the southern
Adirondacks and elevations above 1500 feet in the southern Green
Mountains until 8 PM Monday...

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for western
Greene/western Ulster Counties until 11 AM Sunday...

Wind Advisory remains in effect for the southern Green
Mountains, northern and Central Taconics and Berkshires until 8
AM Sunday...

Flood Watch remains in effect for eastern Ulster, Dutchess and
Litchfield Counties until 8 PM Sunday...

.UPDATE...As of 1245 AM EST, precipitation ending a bit quicker
than previously expected across southern areas, and have
decreased PoPs accordingly across portions of the mid Hudson
Valley and NW CT. In addition, with temps warming to near and
above freezing, and precipitation tapering off, have cancelled
previous winter weather advisory for portions of eastern
Catskills.

Moderate to heavy rain in valleys, and moderate/heavy snow for
elevations mainly above 1500 feet continues per latest NYS
Mesonet webcams for areas near and north of I-90 into southern
VT. There was some snow/sleet mixing in at times within
portions of the Mohawk Valley and upper Hudson Valley as most
intense band of precipitation lifted north.

Across southern VT, heavy snow was falling for areas above 1500
feet, and even for elevations below 1500 feet in eastern Windham
County.

Over the next few hours, precipitation intensity should
decrease from southwest to northeast for areas within and east
of the Hudson River Valley, and may even end in some areas.
P-type across higher elevations of southern VT should change to
a period of sleet/freezing rain as warmer air aloft expands
northward. For the SW Adirondacks, mainly snow is expected,
although there could be some rain mixing in at times when
precipitation intensity decreases.

Winds have remained below advisory levels so far across the
Taconics into southern VT, however as precipitation intensity
decreases, there could be some stronger gusts mixing down, so
will keep advisories at this time.

.UPDATE...As of 935 PM EST, low pressure continues to lift
northward along the mid-Atlantic coast. Widespread precipitation
is continuing across the region. Areas below 1000 feet remain
mainly rain with mixed rain/snow between 1000 and 1500 feet with
wet snow above 1500 feet. While precipitation rates have been
mostly 0.10 to 0.20 inches per hour for the past few hours,
steadier precipitation is beginning to lift northward where
rates are increasing to 0.20 to 0.40 inches per hour. Will
monitor trends for possible minor flooding in urban, low-lying
and poor drainage areas overnight as well as river rises.

Temperatures once again remain on the lower side due in part to
wet-bulb and dynamical cooling processes and blended in the
'cooler' CAMs once again. The 00z KALY sounding showed a small
warm nose right around 850 hPa with a pronounced cold wedge
above the above freezing surface. This could result in some
isolated spots below 1000 feet seeing some wet snowflakes or
sleet mix in for the next few hours. However, the approach of
the surface low and warming aloft will result in a changeover to
plain rain (or possible freezing rain/sleet mix where
temperatures are below freezing) for most areas during the
overnight hours with surface temperatures rebounding a few
degrees toward daybreak Sunday. The exception is across the
higher elevations of the Adirondacks which should stay snow
through the rest of the night.

Precipitation will begin to taper off from south to north by
around 4-5am this morning as a dry slot moves into the region.
Most areas will trend mostly dry by around 8am Sunday morning,
but additional rain/snow showers will develop from west to east
on Sunday.

Winds have begun to pick up across western New England and the
Taconics, but have been more isolated. It is possible many areas
are too stable to mix the winds down to the surface due in part
to the lower surface temperatures. However, some observations
(such as the NYS Mesonet site at Copake) have had gusts in the
35 to 45 mph range. Will keep the wind advisory going through
the overnight as the low- level jet is currently lifting
northward across the region, which could briefly lead to
increased gusts in more areas.

Previous Discussion:
Precipitation continues to overspread the area from west to
east this afternoon. Temperatures had warmed into the upper 30s
to lower 40s in the lower elevations, but only in the lower/mid
30s across higher elevations. Latest guidance indicating mostly
rain or snow based on elevation, with a slight warm nose seen
in the some of the forecast soundings so some sleet could mix in
at times tonight along the edges of the higher elevations from
1000-1500 ft and especially Catskills, Taconics and Berkshires.
Most of the precip should be snow above 1500 ft, especially in
the S. Adirondacks and S. Greens. The heaviest(dense/wet) snow
with snow ratios from 4:1 or 6:1 will fall through tonight as
the moist southerly flow continues with a deepening cyclone
tracking NE from the Delmarva to near NYC to southern New
England through early Sun morning. Greatest confidence in heavy
snow continues to be in the S. Adirondacks and S. Greens with
6-14" forecast, although moderate accumulations of 2-5" expected
in the E. Catskills and lighter amounts in the Taconics and
Berkshires. Moderate to heavy rain will continue in lower
elevations, although may mix with wet snow at times late tonight
in some spots.

Liquid equivalent precip totals into early Sun morning look to
be mainly 1-2 inches, with locally higher amounts in the
favored SE facing upslope areas. Due to wet antecedent ground
conditions, some rivers may reach or exceed minor flood state
across the southern part of the area. See Hydro section for
details.

South-southeast winds will steadily increase as the low level
jet moves overhead tonight. Even with a low level inversion,
sporadic gusts up to 50 mph are expected along the favored
western downslope areas of the S. Greens, Taconics and
Berkshires especially in the typical gaps. Outside of the
advisory area it will be breezy with peak gusts around 20-35 mph
in most spots tonight.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
The main cyclone will track from SE New England Sunday morning
to central Maine late in the day, while the system's upper low
center tracks eastward to near NYC by evening. The flow
trajectory will abruptly shift to the NW by Sun morning, cutting
off the moisture feed from the Atlantic. So the widespread
precip should taper off from SW to NE Sun morning, although
upslope snow will quickly develop across the W. Adirondacks and
S. Greens once the flow shifts, so the Winter Storm Warning will
continue. Snow-liquid ratios will increase in the NW flow/cold
advection time, so the snow will be drier/less dense than the
heavy wet snow Sat night. Guidance indicating lake
enhanced/upslope snows expanding through the day into the
evening to include most west facing slopes of the higher terrain
areas. Some areas may need a Winter Weather Advisory such as
the Taconics and Berkshires. Even some light snow showers may
make it into the Capital District Sun evening. The upslope snow
should persist much of Sunday night. Low temperatures should
range from around upper 20s in the mountains to lower/mid 30s in
the valleys.

The surface cyclone and upper low consolidate over the Canadian
Maritimes on Monday. There will be a NW cyclonic flow regime
over our region, so the upslope snow showers will persist over
the W. Adirondacks and S. Greens with some additional light
snow. Coverage should gradually diminish as drier air starts to
work in. The main impact will be from increasing NW winds as the
pressure gradient strengthens. Forecast soundings indicate
mixing heights up to around 850 mb, with max gusts around 40-45
kt. So Wind Advisories may eventually be issued. Highs looks to
be around 30 in the mountains to upper 30s/lower 40s in the
valleys.

Monday night the storm pulls away further, with dry conditions
expected. NW winds will still be gusty and a Wind Advisory may
eventually be needed through the night. Lows will range from the
lower 20s in the mountains to upper 20s/lower 30s in the
valleys.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Following our multi-hazard event from early in the work week,
Tuesday will feature a break from the active weather with upper
level ridging from the Great Lakes building eastward leading
mainly sunny skies. While northwest winds will not be as intense
as Monday, the lingering tight pressure gradient between the
~980hPa sfc low in the Canadian Maritimes and sfc anticyclone in
the Southeast should support northwest winds remaining breezy
(gusts up to 30-40kts), especially thanks to the increased
sunshine and dry air mass supporting deep boundary layer mixing.
Otherwise, temperatures should trend milder with highs in the
40s to low 50s in the valley. High pressure finally takes
control on Tuesday night as upper level ridging builds overhead
leading to favorable radiational cooling and a chilly night.

A weak sfc low tracking through southern Canada on Wednesday
will drag a sfc boundary into the Northeast. However, this
boundary looks to stalled across the Northeast Wednesday through
Thursday as the front runs into broad upper level ridging
positioned over the mid- Atlantic into the Southeast U.S.
Exactly how far south this thermal gradient stalls is still a
bit uncertain considering the latest guidance but the general
consensus keeps the boundary stalled mainly north of I-90 which
allows much of eastern NY and western New England to remain in
the respective warm sector. With the boundary stalled along the
northern periphery of broad ridging and within a conveyor belt
of fast westerly flow, a few weak shortwaves may ride along the
boundary leading to some weak shower chances. At this time, any
shower chances look limited the southern/western Adirondacks as
the overall air mass is quite dry and we remain within confluent
flow aloft. Otherwise, temperatures Wed - Thurs should continue
trending mild as we remain in the warm sector with high
temperatures warming into the 50s and even 60s by Thursday.

Our next chance for widespread precipitation holds off until
Friday - Saturday when a more potent mid-level shortwave from
the Ohio Valley tracks north and eastward along our stalled
boundary. A strong mid- level jet also noses into the Northeast
ahead of the amplifying sfc low which should enhance forcing for
ascent and result in widespread precipitation. Luckily, the
mild antecedent conditions with temperatures on Friday looking
to remain 10-15 degrees above normal should favor plain rain
p-types for much of the area. Any wintry mix will likely be
limited to the southern Adirondacks.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Through 06z Monday...Conditions have been bouncing between MVFR and
IFR over the last couple hours with widespread rain at all TAF
sites. Back edge of the rain should move through POU in the next
couple hours, although it will take until closer to 9-11z for
widespread rain to end at ALB/PSF/GFL. Expecting prevailing MVFR
cigs and MVFR to IFR vsbys at these TAF sites until the rain ends.

Vsbys improve back to MVFR to VFR once widespread rain ends with
just a few lingering showers through the first half of the morning.
Cigs may be a little slower to improve than vsbys, but should see
mainly VFR cigs by the mid to late morning at ALB/GFL/POU, although
cigs remain MVFR through the day at PSF with upslope flow. With
increasing chances for upslope snow showers this evening, have
included snow showers at ALB/GFL/PSF with MVFR cigs and MVFR to IFR
vsbys possible in snow showers.

Winds will be from the northwest through the next couple hours, then
become westerly at 10-15kt with gusts of 20-30 kt expected through
the day today. Strongest winds will be at ALB/PSF. Gusty west winds
continue through at least the end of the TAF period. A brief period
of low-level wind shear is possible at PSF through the first couple
hours of the TAF period before the low-level jet moves off to the
east.

.HYDROLOGY...
A Flood Watch has been issued for eastern Ulster, Dutchess and
Litchfield Counties from 5 PM this evening through 8 PM Sunday.

A period of moderate to heavy precipitation is expected
tonight, with total liquid equivalent amounts of 1-2 inches
expected. A good portion of this will likely fall as snow and/or
mixed precipitation for elevations above 1500 feet, especially
across the southern Adirondacks and southern VT. This should
reduce potential hydrological impacts in these areas. In areas
where mainly plain rain occurs, ponding of water in low
lying/poor drainage areas is likely. In addition, renewed river
flooding may occur, particularly across portions of NW CT and
(Housatonic basin) and mid Hudson Valley. Will continue to watch
trends across the SE Catskills as well, in case less snow
occurs, allowing for greater runoff potential and raising
chances of minor flooding of rivers/creeks.

Outside the Flood Watch, a few other river points such as Troy
along the Hudson and Riverbank along the Schroon may reach of
exceed flood stage. Will not include these areas in the Flood
Watch due to isolated coverage.

In addition, minor flooding along the Hudson River at
Poughkeepsie is expected during the next 2 high tide cycles (~11
PM EST tonight, and ~1 PM EDT Sunday). A Flood Warning has
already been issued through Sunday.
