.SYNOPSIS...
A dry and seasonable day today. A powerful storm will impact
the region Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday bringing very strong
wind gusts, heavy rain that may lead to flooding, and high-
elevation wet snow. Drier weather returns Thursday, however yet
another storm system is expected to the region for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
.UPDATE...Minor adjustments to reflect current obs early this
afternoon. Mostly sunny skies occurring from around the Hudson
Valley east, with partly to mostly cloudy skies west.

.PREV DISCUSSION[1005]...Satellite imagery showing at least
partial sunshine occurring in the Hudson Valley and the
Taconics, and SW New England. Clouds are more prevalent in the
higher terrain areas especially west of the Hudson Valley with
NW flow and clouds/flurries off Lake Ontario. No significant
changes with this update.

Today and tonight will be the lull between storms. High
pressure at the surface and aloft will build in today and shift
eastward across the region. Most areas will get the pleasure of
some sunshine today, exception will be across a portion of the
western Adirondacks where clouds will continue to dominate.
Winds will gradually weaken as the high builds in. Looking at
highs from the mid 20s to upper 30s. With diminishing and fresh
snowpack in place, temperatures will drop down into the mid
teens to lower 20s overnight tonight. High level cirrus clouds
will overspread the area in advance of the approaching system.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
* Powerful storm to impact the region Tuesday afternoon into
  Wednesday with multiple hazards: very strong wind gusts, heavy
  rain that may lead to flooding, and high-elevation wet snow.

* A Flood Watch has been issued for Tuesday evening through
  Wednesday afternoon Litchfield, Berkshire, Albany, Columbia,
  Dutchess, Greene, Rensselaer, Ulster, Schoharie, and Ulster
  counties. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall and snow melt
  may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other
  low-lying and flood-prone locations.

* A High Wind Watch has been issued for Tuesday night for the
  potential southeast winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60
  mph across Berkshire, Bennington, Herkimer, Hamilton, Eastern
  Rensselaer and Eastern Columbia counties. These winds bring
  the potential for downed trees/limbs leading to power
  outages.

Tuesday will start out cold and dry however conditions will
quickly deteriorate during the afternoon as precipitation
overspreads the area and southeasterly winds increase.

A vertically stacked low pressure system over the Southern
Plains early this morning will evolve into the power system as
it tracks northeastward reaching the Great Lakes Region Tuesday
night. Our region will be on the warm side of the storm, however
initially a cold airmass will be in place which will get scoured
out. We will start out with temperatures in the upper teens to
lower 20s with temperatures expected to gradually rise into the
upper 20s to upper 30s during the day and into the upper 30s to
lower 50s through the overnight hours.

This storm will feature a very impressive low level jet of
60 to 80 knots, with the NAEFS and EPS continuing to show a
corresponding v wind anomaly of +5 to +6 standard deviations.
A High Wind Watch has been issued for higher elevations of the
southern Adirondacks into the western Mohawk Valley and for the
southern Greens and Berkshires of western New England. However,
a fairly strong inversion over a fresh pack bring uncertainties
as to how much of this wind will mix down into lower
elevations. There are chances the watch could be expanded and/or
eventually upgraded to a warning with wind advisories for gusts
of 45 to 55 mph likely across most of the area as confidence
increases.

The very strong jet will transport moisture into the region with
precipitable water values of 3/4 to 1 1/4 inches expected
across the local area; which are +2 to +4 standard deviations.
QPF amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected across the local area
with the highest amounts of 2 to 3 inches south and east of the
Capital District.

Initially precipitation will start out mainly as snow. Rain
will in with the snow with a changeover to plain rain eventually
occurring across the entire area by late at night. A wet snow
will accumulated across the high terrain mainly above 1500
feet. At least advisory level snow (3 to 6 inches) is expected
at this time. However across the highest terrain of the
southern Adirondacks and southern Greens warning level snows (7+
inches) is possible. The snow will occur Tuesday afternoon and
evening. As confidence increases Winter Weather headlines will
be issued. The weight of the wet snow combined with the very
strong winds will lead to the risk of power outages.

The system's cold/occluded front will move off the northeast
early Wednesday morning; winds will shift from the southeast to
the southwest. These winds will be brisk and gusty and usher
colder air back into the region. Steady precipitation will
taper off and transition to showers. Temperatures Wednesday are
expected to drop into the upper 20s to lower 40s by sunset.

Some lake effect snow showers are also expected behind the
front as cooler air moves over the Great Lakes.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
With model guidance showing increasingly coherent signals for yet
another potent storm system for this coming weekend, it's safe to
say that the active pattern we are currently immersed in will
not be coming to an end in the near future...

Wednesday night through Friday...Lake-induced snow or rain/snow
showers will linger primarily in portions of the SW Adirondacks and
Mohawk and northern Schoharie Valleys Wednesday night into Thursday
morning as upper energy pulses around the southern periphery of the
progressive system that will have brought widespread, heavy rain and
strong winds to the region Tuesday evening into Wednesday. As the
aforementioned system continues along its north-northeast trajectory
away from the region throughout the night Wednesday, the upper
pulses will gradually lose energy with mild height rises crawling
across the region and precipitation will rescind in spatial coverage
to primarily the SW Adirondacks by daybreak Thursday. However, snow
showers will linger here throughout the day Thursday as a shortwave
trough rotates through the region thanks to the persistence of
Tuesday night/Wednesday's system overhead.

Upper-level ridging and subsequent high pressure building in at the
surface finally brings an end to any persistent snow showers by
Thursday night, yielding a dry day Friday. Clouds will be persistent
across much of the area, however as the next storm system begins to
surge toward the region.

Friday night through Sunday...Though inexact in terms of the
specific details, another potent storm system looks to be on deck
for next weekend. Originating as a positively tilted, open wave
trough across the west coast, this next system will surge across the
CONUS, deepening and becoming slightly negatively tilted by Friday
afternoon as it centers over the Southern Plains. Cyclogenesis looks
to take place with pressure continually decreasing as the trough
shifts toward a northeast trajectory towards the Ohio
Valley/southern Great Lakes Region. Precipitation will overspread
the region by late Friday night/early Saturday morning and last
through at least Saturday night as what looks to be primarily rain a
secondary surface low looks to potentially form closer to the coast
to entice occlusion and subsequent injection of warm air into the
column. However, precipitation type and evolution of this system
remain uncertain at this time. Some models have an onset of snow
with a transition to primarily rain similarly to the expectation for
the storm Tuesday night and Wednesday. Winds look to be fairly
strong again, however, with a hefty pressure gradient associated
with the system. Will continue to monitor trends with this system as
lead time decreases.

Lake effect snow showers will be possible on the back side of the
system as upper-troughing remains prevalent and energy continues to
advect through its southern periphery. A cooler airmass is also
expected to be in place beginning Sunday as a cold front associated
with the system passes through Saturday night.

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Flying conditions are currently VFR across the region. There are
some clouds from lake effect activity just west of the area, but
most of these will remain just west through the rest of the day.
Can't rule out some sct cigs around 3500 ft or so, but it will
remain VFR with light winds through the rest of the day.

For tonight, increasing low level moisture may allow for some
MVFR cigs to develop by the late night hours. Will allow for
bkn-ovc cigs around 2-3 kft to develop for late in the
overnight. If skies remain clear for long enough, it's possible
that some patchy fog develops late in the overnight, but this is
very uncertain. For now, will side with the development of some
stratus for the late night hours, with conditions becoming MVFR
for Tuesday morning.

MVFR cigs within stratus clouds are expected on Tuesday morning
for all sites. Winds will become south to southeast and increase
to 5 to 10 kts through the morning hours. Some precip will
arrive for all sites by later in the day.

.HYDROLOGY...
* A Flood Watch has been issued for Tuesday evening through
  Wednesday afternoon Litchfield, Berkshire, Albany, Columbia,
  Dutchess, Greene, Rensselaer, Ulster, Schoharie, and Ulster
  counties. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall and snow melt
  may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other
  low-lying and flood-prone locations.

Widespread 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected Tuesday night
through Wednesday as a power system impacts the Northeast. In
addition to the expected rainfall, snowmelt will added to the
runoff. There are uncertainties regarding how much snow melt
can take place. Temperatures will warm into the 40s Tuesday
night into Wednesday, this warm- up will be short lived with
temperatures dropping back into the upper 20s to lower 30s
Wednesday night.

Where the flood watch in effect, the Weather Prediction Center
has slight to moderate excessive rainfall risks in their excessive
