High pressure builds across the Northeast US tonight through
Wednesday and settles near the New England Coast Thursday. Drier
and milder conditions will continue through Wednesday. A chance
for showers returns late in the week as low pressure
potentially tracks out of the Gulf coast region. Another cold
front crosses the area this weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/...
As of 340 PM EDT Tuesday...

Key Message:

- Cool and dry tonight a breezy northeast wind along the coast.

Dry wx with low humidity prevails across much of the area this
afternoon as ~1028mb high pressure is centered from the eastern
Great Lakes to the northern Mid-Atlantic. It is mainly sunny inland
and partly-mostly cloudy with marine stratocumulus closer to the
coast. NE winds will diminish inland overnight but gusts of 20-30
mph will continue near the coast. Mainly clear inland (and cool)
tonight with forecast lows in the upper 40s to mid 50s. Warmer
toward the coast with the onshore flow off the relatively warmer
water with lows in the 60s. Additionally, stratocumulus will
continue to stream off the ocean toward coastal VA and NE NC through
the night.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 340 PM EDT Tuesday...

Key Message:

- Dry and mild conditions continue on Wednesday.

- Low-end rain chances return to SE VA/NE NC on Thursday and to the
  entire area on Friday with a noticeable increase in humidity.

- Remaining breezy along the coast as onshore flow continues.

Surface high pressure remains centered over the Northeast CONUS
through Wednesday, and then shifts off the New England Coast
Thursday as broad upper ridging builds across the Ohio Valley.
Partly sunny and mild Wednesday with highs in the mid to upper 70s
with some cirrus clouds aloft and marine stratocumulus toward the
coast as onshore flow continues. Similar to today, expect SCT
stratocu to spread inland during the midday-afternoon. Partly cloudy
and mainly dry Wednesday night with lows ranging from the mid 50s NW
to the upper 60s/around 70F SE. Slightly warmer (with continued
lower humidity) Thursday with highs in the upper 70s to around 80F.

Weak low pressure develops in vicinity of the Gulf Stream Wednesday
and tries to retrograde toward the coast on Thursday. That latest
12z guidance keeps the bulk of the precipitation offshore, but will
still maintain 20-30% PoPs for showers during the aftn/evening. Not
too confident in thunder, but can't completely rule it out with
SBCAPE of up to 1000 J/kg in SE VA/NE NC. Highs will be around 80F
on Thursday, but dew pts will be noticeably higher. Remaining breezy
along the coast Wednesday and Thursday with a NE wind of 10-15 mph
gusting to 20-25 mph.

Upper troughing begins to amplify over Ontario/the nrn Great Lakes
on Friday as our next cold front approaches from the NW. Meanwhile,
a southern stream shortwave is progged to track from the Deep South
toward the Carolinas. There will be a modest increase in deep-
layered moisture on Friday (PWs potentially rising to 1.4-1.7").
With slight height falls in advance of the shortwave, a few
afternoon showers/tstms are possible just about anywhere on Fri
(PoPs ~20%). Dew pts rise into the upper 60s-lower 70s area-wide by
Friday w/ highs mainly in the lower 80s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 340 PM EDT Tuesday...

Key Messages:

- A possible low pressure system moves SE of the area Friday
  night and Saturday, bringing a better chance for showers and
  thunderstorms.

- Dry and pleasant conditions return Sunday into early next week.

On Saturday, the upper level pattern shifts as a potent upper
low drops into the Great Lakes with SW flow aloft over the Mid-
Atlantic. This will allow a wave of low pressure to lift NE from
the Gulf Coast in the Friday night-Saturday timeframe, followed
by a cold front later Saturday. Confidence in the details
remains low, so at this time there is a broad period of 40-50%
PoPs for showers and perhaps some tstms late Friday into
Saturday night. The models suggest a small rainfall accumulation
with ensemble probabilities favoring less than 0.1 in of rain
in a 24 hr window. Warmer and more humid on Saturday with highs
in the lower 80s (upper 70s in the piedmont), and lows Saturday
morning in the upper to mid 60s. The upper low dampens and
pushes E Sunday into early next week as surface high pressure
builds SE into the Mid-Atlantic. This will bring dry and
pleasant conditions with high temperatures in the upper 70s to
around 80F with morning cooler lows in the 50s inland and upper
50s along the coast.

.AVIATION /20Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 155 PM EDT Tuesday...

SCT to occasionally BKN CIGs around 3000ft AGL prevail at the
terminals this afternoon, with the most extensive cloud cover
near the coast. Cloud cover may diminish inland tonight, but
expect SCT-BKN CIGs of 2500-3000ft AGL to continue near the
coast through tonight. SCT MVFR-VFR CU/SC increases inland on
Wednesday and persists near the coast. Gusty NE winds (to
20-25kt) will continue near the coast through much of the
period while winds diminish inland tonight.

Mainly dry Wednesday through Wednesday night, with a slight chc
of showers Thursday across SE VA and NE NC. High pressure moves
offshore Friday into Saturday as low pressure and a cold front
move into the region. This will bring a chc of showers/tstms.

.MARINE...
As of 340 PM EDT Tuesday...

Key Messages:

- Small Craft Advisories continue for the southern Chesapeake
  Bay, lower James River, Currituck Sound, and all Atlantic
  coastal waters.

- Prolonged onshore flow event will keep seas above 5 ft through
  this week and likely into the weekend.

1028mb high pressure is centered over western PA with a ridge axis
extending southward to the east of the Blue Ridge. A 1018mb surface
low is noted off the SC coast with a steep pressure gradient between
these features. NE winds are strongest (20-25 kt with gusts 25-30
kt) across the southern half of the area where the gradient is
tightest. As expected, winds across the northern waters have fallen
off from where they were this morning. The SCA headlines for the
central and northern bay zones were allowed to expire on schedule at
1pm this afternoon. Waves are 2-4 ft in the bay with 3-5 ft near the
mouth. Seas range from 4-6 ft N to 5-8 ft near and south of the
VA/NC border.

NE winds continue this evening and through much of the week as high
pressure remains anchored N and NE of the local area and low
pressure lingers offshore. Guidance shows the potential for winds in
the central and upper bay to increase back toward SCA thresholds
this evening into tonight but confidence remains low that this surge
will result in more than a few hours of 15-20 kt sustained winds.
There actually will be several periods over the next 48 hours where
winds increase to marginal SCA levels in this area. To the south and
offshore, confidence in sustained SCA conditions is much higher and
have extended headlines into Thursday evening for the southern Ches
Bay and coastal waters south of Chincoteague. Seas will start to
fall off (at least temporarily) for the waters off of Ocean City, MD
late tonight so have only extended the SCA headlines there until 1am
for now. Seas will continue to be highest (5-7 ft) across the
southern coastal waters tonight and early Wednesday with 3-5 ft from
Cape Charles Light N. Thereafter, seas build to 4-6 ft for all
coastal waters Wednesday evening into Thursday and likely remain in
this range well into the weekend. Waves will average 2-3 ft in the
central and northern Ches Bay but remain 3-4 ft for the southern bay
and especially at the mouth where waves occasionally build to 4-5
ft. A deep trough aloft digs into the Great Lakes region late this
week into Saturday with models continuing to struggle regarding
placement and strength of surface low pressure lifting northward
near the coast.

High rip current risk at all beaches on Wednesday and likely
Thursday as well.
