.SHORT TERM...An active weather pattern returns to the panhandle
as increasingly stronger fronts move into SE AK through the next
few days. A weak front moving through the area as of the time of
writing is bringing occasional rain, and in a few places,
potentially some snow. As temperatures warm through the day, rain
will fully supplant any chances of snow, though do not expect any
significant precipitation totals. The best chance for
precipitation will be around the northern half of the panhandle
and for the outer Gulf Coast.

Another system will arrive through the evening hours and into
Sunday. This system will be somewhat stronger than the first one,
with some gale force winds for parts of the outer Gulf possible.
While precipitation will remain primarily rain (though a few
locations may see some snow mix in), the big story with this
system will be the potential for high winds in Skagway. MOS
Guidance is united behind the prospect of a high wind event for
the far northern panhandle, potentially driven by the possibility
of turbulent mixing from elevated winds in the 850 - 700 mb level
being brought down to the surface and then channeled through Taiya
Inlet. Most of the operational runs are somewhat less bold on
their forecasts for winds, but given the possibility, have chosen
to issue a High Wind Watch beginning Saturday night and going
through Sunday evening. Think that the best chance for any high
winds will be Sunday morning through Sunday afternoon. The
potential for fog development in areas south of the northern
panhandle, including the Icy Strait Corridor, exists Sunday night
as skies attempt to clear somewhat in these locations ahead of
another system which arrives on Monday. For additional details,
see the long term forecast discussion.

.LONG TERM...For the start of the long term period, rain will continue
across the panhandle and snow also looks to make a return towards
the middle of the week. For the first storm that will be hitting
during the start of the long term period, precipitation looks to
come to an end by Sunday night. Most of this will be rain but
there is the possibility that some snow will mix in. After the
main band of precipitation comes to an end, showers are still
likely across the area as onshore flow continues. After a brief
lull, another warm front will move into the gulf before impacting
the panhandle during the day on Monday. This system will have more
of a mix of rain and snow with some an increased likelihood of
snow. Looking at current 850mb temps and 1000-850mb thickness,
snow will be supported across the most of the panhandle with the
exception of the southern panhandle. Accumulations from this snow
look to remain below four to five inches and accumulations look to
be spread out over a longer period of time.

Getting later into the middle of next week, we look to have a
continued, unsettled pattern as onshore flow allows for active
weather. Temperatures are expected to remain more likely below
normal for the extended forecast.

.AVIATION.../Until 12Z Sunday/...A frontal system is pushing into SE
AK. Primarily MVFR CIG flight conditions are expected through the
majority of the TAF period for the Alaskan Panhandle. VIS conditions
may occasionally dip down to within the MVFR category at times, as
well, along with heavier rain rates. SFC winds will be gusty for the
Lynn Canal / Skagway / Haines area as the pressure gradient tightens
as the front continues to push into the region. LLWS values of up to
around 30-35 kt out of the SE are likely for the NE Gulf Coast
Region, including Yakutat. LLWS values look to remain generally on
the more benign side elsewhere through the forecast period.
