.SHORT TERM...A strong low moving N through the Gulf is bringing
with it rain, wind, and for a few locations snow, across SE
Alaska. Precipitation will diminish in coverage for much of
Saturday before another system arrives.

An upper level trough has provided the impetus for a low which is
racing N through the Gulf as of the time of writing. Satellite and
radar imagery show that the second wrap is advancing through the
panhandle as of the time of writing, bringing more stratiform
precipitation back across much of the area after a brief lull
following the initial band, which saw more convective activity.
With this second wave, precipitation will continue to be rain for
most locations near sea level, the exceptions being Haines and
potentially Skagway. For these locations, continuing N flow has
kept enough cooler air in place to enable some snow to fall near
sea level - this will change by Friday afternoon, as warmer air
finally advances N through Lynn Canal. However, this warm air will
not sufficiently reach all the way up the Highways as quickly,
and so anticipate that snow will continue falling at elevation for
some time yet. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Haines
Highway. Snow levels will begin diminishing Friday evening across
the N half of the panhandle, which will open up the possibility
for some snow mixing in for locations closer to sea level Friday
night, though any accumulations will be limited by the diminishing
moisture transport.

Windy conditions are expected for much of the panhandle as the
current system advances N, with gale force winds and small craft
conditions across the inner channels, and gale force winds for
many of the outer coastal waters. Strong winds are expected or
already underway across many land-based locations. Winds and
widespread precipitation will be on a diminishing trend by late
Friday night and through much of Saturday, though the reprieve
will prove marginal, with lingering possibilities for rain
continuing. Another system begins moving in to the area from the S
by Saturday night, bringing with it still more precip to SE AK.

.LONG TERM...Upper level troughing will prevail over the gulf
through the period with minor differences in axis placement. This
will maintain an active pattern through the extended as minor
disturbances eject out the base of the trough. Ensembles in good
agreement with a more organized system impacting the region mid next
week with more precip and wind. Given the persistent SWly flow ahead
of this makes the majority of precip expected to fall as rain except
for the higher elevations on the Haines and Klondike highways.
Precipitation recurrence intervals are not that impressive at
this time (1-2 year return), but with above normal temps and a few
ensemble members progging heavier precip WPC maintained threat of
heavy precip and high winds mid next week. Overall no large
changes to the extended forecast.

.AVIATION...Conditions over Southeast Alaska Thursday morning are
marginal with CIGs generally between 1000 and 5000 feet with tops
at or near 8000 feet. VSBY down to 4 miles at times. Cannot rule
out lower conditions in heavier snow or snow showers. More
impactful will be low level winds. The high end gale force low
over the eastern Gulf of Alaska not very far west of Cross Sound
features a low level circulation of 60 kts. That is producing LLWS
and copious amounts of mechanical turbulence. Early morning
PIREPS into Juneau confirm and verify this. Do not expect these
conditions to improve until early Saturday morning. Final aviation
issue today is thunderstorm activity on the outer coast. Have
seen several strikes via the lightning detection network, but so
far nothing has been observed inland. Modeled lapse rates, lifted
indices, and CAPE all suggest that more thunderstorm activity is
possible, but not certain through the day today.
