* WHAT...Snow and blowing snow with visibility near zero at 
  times. Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch. West 
  winds gusting as high as 45 mph. Wind chills to 55 below.

* WHERE...Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast.

* WHEN...Until 3 AM AKST Friday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on difficult travel conditions. Areas of 
  blowing snow will cause periods of visibility near zero and 
  whiteout conditions. Snow drifts will form. The dangerously 
  cold wind chills to 55 below zero could cause frostbite on 
  exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. This will make travel very

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...

Clear and cold conditions will persist over most of Northern
Alaska through Saturday. A slow moving upper level ridge will
bring warmer temperatures from west to east Saturday through
Monday ahead of a strong front. This front is associated with a
low pressure system that will move into the Bering Sea Saturday
and has the potential to bring blizzard conditions along the coast from
Nome south on Sunday. Blowing snow and very cold wind chills
persist along the Arctic Coast from Deadhorse east.

.DISCUSSION...

Analysis and Model Discussion...

A deep longwave trough lies over Mainland Alaska east of Galena
with strong northerly flow over the west coast ahead of a ridge
to the west. The longwave trough is anchored at 500 mb by a 502
decameter low in the Gulf of Alaska. Very cold air at 850 mb
ranging from -22 C to -32 C extends from the Beaufort Sea south
all the way into Southcentral. This is an anomalously cold airmass
for this time of year. This pattern will be slow to change as the
ridge currently over the Bering Sea will slowly slide eastward to
the western Interior by late Saturday and to the central Interior
on Sunday. Behind the ridge, a 994 mb surface low will move to
Nunivak Island late Saturday night, bringing a strong front to the
west coast south of the Seward Peninsula. This will begin a
transition to a more progressive and wetter pattern for Northern
Alaska heading into next week.

Models are in good agreement on the pattern aloft through Sunday,
though the GFS and NAM are faster with the eastward progression of
the ridge than the ECMWF and Canadian models. As a result, they
are also faster in bringing precipitation to the West Coast with
the trailing front. Model trends (Dprog/Dt) of all models and
ensemble means are pointing to a slower solution, which is
typical in this pattern involving amplified features and abundant
cold air. We will trend the forecast toward the Canadian for winds
and to a blend of the Canadian and the ECMWF for other forecast
elements. We will increase winds above model guidance in a few
spots where models continue to struggle. These are the Alaska and
Brooks Range passes, the eastern Arctic Coast, and the Goldengate
area east of Nome.

Central and Eastern Interior...

Very cold temperatures persist over the area with valleys in the
20s to 40s below zero this morning. Highs will struggle to get out
of the teens below zero. These cold temperatures will persist
through Saturday morning before slight warming on Saturday
afternoon and further warming to near normal by Monday afternoon.
North winds gusting to 45 mph through Alaska Range passes will
persist through Friday night. This is producing very cold winds
chills and areas of blowing snow south of Trims Camp along the
Richardson Highway and south of the Denali Park entrance along the
Parks Highway.

North Slope and Brooks Range...

Wind chills approaching 60 below zero are currently occurring from
Kuparuk east to Kaktovik along the coast. These very cold wind
chills will continue through Friday morning. Blowing snow is
reducing visibility near Deadhorse and creating near blizzard
conditions from Point Thomson east to Kaktovik. Expect visibility
to improve this evening as winds drop off, though colder
temperatures will keep wind chills near warning level. A Wind
Chill Advisory also remains in effect through this afternoon for
Brooks Range passes where wind chills remain 50 to 55 below. Winds
through Brooks Range passes will diminish Friday.

West Coast and Western Interior...

A weak shortwave will bring light snow to the Chukchi Coast today.
Cold wind chills persist near Kotzebue Sound, in the Lower Kobuk
Valley, and east of Nome in the Goldengate area. Mainly just cold
and clear conditions elsewhere. On Saturday evening, a strong
front will move to the Yukon Delta. This will bring snow, blowing
snow, and possible blizzard conditions for Nome south Saturday
night and Sunday. Winds will turn offshore ahead of the
approaching front Friday into Saturday and increase to 25 to 30
mph sustained near Kotzebue, over St. Lawrence Island, and south
of Nome Saturday night and Sunday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast For Days 4 Through 7...

Models indicate ridging persisting over most of Northern Alaska
through Tuesday, but indicate a likely ridge rider system bringing
light to moderate snow to the West Coast, Western Interior, and
possibly the Central Interior Monday and Tuesday. Solutions
diverge after Tuesday evening, though all solutions would point
toward largely above normal temperatures through most of next
week with highs ranging from the single digits below zero along
the Arctic Coast to the 20s above for the west coast and southern
Interior.
