Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Cold snap continues for the Interior through the
weekend. Low temps still around 40 to 55 below and some patchy
dense ice fog around the Fairbanks metro area again this
morning. Continued very cold into Saturday. Blizzard warning
continues for the Eastern North slope. Winter Weather Advisory
persist over parts of the Brooks Range for blowing snow and
wind chills.

.DISCUSSION...

At the 500 mb level, A very cold 500 dam cutoff low is over the
northern Interior and will slowly drift to the east through
Saturday. -30 to -35 temps at 850 mb will remain over Interior
through Saturday. Early next week, we will start to see the
return of southerly flow along the West Coast, as weak upper
ridging over the Bering Sea propagates east. which will bring
some warming to Interior 850 temperatures. The west coast will
begin an unsettled pattern through the week with lows effecting
the west coast.

North Slope and Brooks Range…

Blizzard conditions continue for the eastern North slope through
Sat morning. The winds are still stronger than the models show,
so have extended the warning through today. Around 10 to 15 below
near the coast and very cold temps remain in the Brooks Range
through forecast period.

West Coast and Western Interior…
A front in the Bering gets close to Saint Lawrence Island on
Friday. Winds do ramp up out of the northeast on Friday and remain
strong into Saturday. Very cold air returns to parts of the
Western Interior, as high pressure and the cold dome dominate the
area. The cold will remain through the end of the week, but areas
directly along the coast and open water will see warmer
temperatures than those inland. There could be more low wind
chills along the coast as winds pick up again. Precip does reach
the Yukon Delta by Saturday and snow and blowing snow near the
coast is expected. Snow accumulations around 1 to 3 inches for
the Yukon Delta.

Central and Eastern Interior...Another very cold morning around
the Interior with temps ranging 40 below to 55 below. Patchy
dense fog around the Fairbanks area this morning once again.
Dense fog advisory has been issued through 3 PM.  There may be
brief clearing today then more clouds expected tonight. Equally
cold morning on tap for Friday night into Saturday. Slight
warm up on Sunday then Temps will finally rebound early next week
as the cold arctic low exits and warmer air makes it way into the
Interior.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7…
Upper level low hangs on over the Eastern Interior through the
weekend and very cold 850 temps remain over the much of the
Interior through the weekend then a warm up next week. As ridging
pushes inland, we will start to see systems in the Bering Sea
grow stronger and push closer to the coast. This will lead to an
active period for the West Coast, as these systems bring stronger
winds and precipitation. Along with a more active pattern out
west, this would indicate strong warm advection into the region as
well. 850 temps start to rebound over the Interior Monday through
Wednesday.
