Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Our west coast storm will be wrapping up today into tonight as it
moves northwest of St. Lawrence Island and fizzles out. The North
Slope and Interior remain quiet and dry today but winds will be
increasing for the Interior summits tonight. Otherwise, we are
watching for continued storminess along the West Coast and Western
Interior this weekend into next week, and very windy conditions in
the Alaska Range and along Interior highway summits this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
A weakening 505 decameter low to the southwest of St. Lawrence
Island will move north over the Gulf of Anadyr tonight. This low
will gradually traverse north-northeast, out of the area this
weekend. A strengthening upper low south of Unalaska at 55N will
move northeast to the Alaska Peninsula tonight. This low will then
weaken tomorrow and continue pushing northward into southwest AK
as an open shortwave this weekend. Ridging over the Central and
Eastern Interior will strengthen a bit and also move east as the
Pacific low moves north, thus tightening a pressure gradient over
the Interior tonight through this weekend.

Surface Analysis...
A weakening 975 mb low south-southwest of St. Lawrence Island will
move northwest of St. Lawrence Island tonight and fizzle out as it
does so. Right on its heels will be a a 964 mb low which will move
into the AK Peninsula tonight with some precipitation in
southwest AK. This low, coupled with a strengthening 1021 mb high
over the Yukon will allow for a strong pressure gradient to
develop over the Alaska Range and Interior. Summits along the
Dalton, Elliot and Steese Highways will all be impacted with gusty
winds and the potential for blowing snow this weekend. The
strongest winds will come through the Alaska Range, specifically
Isabel Pass where gusts may get as high as 70 mph. Blowing snow
will be a concern in the Interior but should be limited some by
increasing temperatures in the Alaska Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...
An active pattern looks to continue into this weekend but today
shouldn't be too bad, especially in the afternoon as most of the
precipitation heads west of the area. However, another storm moves
into the AK Peninsula tonight though this one will not be as
potent as the last. Winds will be much weaker and precipitation
amounts will be far less. As the low moves north to St. Mary's
Saturday morning, precipitation chances increase. Generally,
expect snow to the north/west of the low and snow/mixed
precipitation showers to the east of the low. Then towards Monday
of next week, another low looks to move into the Eastern Bering
Sea with another round of precipitation and stronger winds.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Quiet, dry and gradually warming up today. The main hazards coming
up will be wind and blowing snow. Winds will be ramping up with
gusts to 40 mph along the Dalton Highway summits late tonight and
continue through the day tomorrow. Tomorrow evening, light snow
will move in as well, increasing the chances for blowing snow.
Otherwise, winds will weaken overnight for the Dalton, then ramp
up for the Steese Highway summits Saturday morning. Similarly,
the Alaska Range Passes and Tanana Valley Jet (TVJ) will be seeing
an uptick in winds. Gusts to 35 mph in Delta Junction are
expected by tonight while gusts to 50 mph are expected in the AK
Range Passes. Tomorrow afternoon, the TVJ winds will increase a
bit more and peak with 40 to 45 mph gusts through Saturday.
Meanwhile, Windy Pass will see wind gusts increasing to 55 to 60
mph tomorrow afternoon through Saturday, and Isabel Pass will have
wind gusts up to 70 mph. Blowing snow around Delta Junction and
in the Alaska Range should be limited with temperatures rising
into the teens/20s tomorrow, and mid to upper 30s on Saturday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Quiet weather prevails today but windier conditions will arrive
tonight into tomorrow. The Arctic Coast will have sustained
northeast winds increasing to around 20 to 30 mph with gusts to
40 mph possible by tomorrow evening. There will be some blowing
snow as well. Atigun Pass will have increased southerly winds
tomorrow with gusts to 35 mph the afternoon. Winds look to
decrease in most spots but northeast winds with gusts upwards of
40 to 45 mph look to continue from Point Hope to Point Lay through
Saturday. Otherwise we will see a front move from south to north
through the Brooks Range and into the North Slope Saturday and
Sunday with areas of light snow across the area. The NW Arctic
Coast may have areas of blowing snow as well when this front moves
through.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
In the Interior, wind gusts look weaken gradually on Sunday but
another low will move near southwest AK on Monday and can increase
the gradient once again, resulting in more wind. It looks like
temperatures will be relatively warm, so blowing snow may not be
much of an issue by then. Otherwise, the storm track will continue
to be along the West Coast with several waves of precipitation and
strong winds possible through at least the middle of next week.
Models disagree on how the ridging over the Central and Eastern
Interior breaks down, but given the strength of the ridge, it will
probably linger through the end of the week before giving way to
more troughing. Nonetheless, temperatures across much of the
state will be well above average next week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
A train of storms will bring several rounds strong winds. It seems
like the bulk of the strongest winds will be blowing offshore as
these storms pass which would lead to minimal impact, but they are
being monitored.
