.SYNOPSIS...
The primary weather hazards over the next few days are related to
breezy conditions that result in blowing snow and wind chill
hazards. A gradual warming trend is expected this week signaling
the end of dangerously cold wind chills by Monday away from the
Yukon Flats. However, increasing winds result in increasing
coverage of blowing snow concerns tonight through Sunday, mainly
for interior summits. EFI guidance continues to highlight gusty
wind/blowing snow potential for interior summits through Tuesday,
but the signal is less robust on Mon/Tue than on Sunday. This
corridor of stronger winds lifts across the North Slope Tuesday
and along most of the Arctic Coast by Wednesday.

KEY MESSAGES...

Central and Eastern Interior...

- Snow showers gradually end overnight with less than an inch of
additional accumulation by Sunday morning.

- Northeast winds increase this afternoon into Sunday for interior
summits, particularly along the Dalton, Elliott, and Steese
Highways. Expect gusts up to 45 mph resulting in areas of blowing
and drifting snow that reduces visibility below a mile at times.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect through Sunday afternoon.

- A Cold Weather Advisory was issued for the Tanana Valley including
Delta Junction as Tanana Valley Jet increases overnight. Wind chills
as cold as -50F are possible before temperatures moderate on Sunday.

West Coast and Western Interior...

- Gusty northeast winds continue through Sunday for the entire
southwest Yukon River Valley and West Coast including the southern
Seward Peninsula, Norton Sound, and Y-K Delta. Winds in the
southwest Yukon River Valley will be as high as 30 mph, while areas
of the coast could see gusts up to 40 mph.

- Temperatures cool over the weekend with below zero lows for most
of the Kotzebue Sound Coastline and portions of the Norton Sound
coast. Tonight and Sunday night appear coldest followed by a gradual
warming trend next week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...

- West winds up to 35 mph prolong blizzard conditions over the
eastern North Slope. A Blizzard Warning is in effect through 6 PM
this evening.

- Northerly gap winds up to 35 mph through the Brooks Range Passes
result in areas of blowing and drifting snow reducing visibility
below a mile through this afternoon. A Winter Weather Advisory
remains in effect through 6 PM this evening.

- Easterly winds increase across the North Slope and Arctic Coast
Sunday night and continue through Tuesday evening. Blowing snow may
reduce visibility below 1 mile at times.

.DISCUSSION...

Only minor changes made to the going forecast as generally cold
weather transitions to blustery east winds and blowing snow concerns
through early next week. As of 1:30 PM Saturday GINA's IR satellite
mosaic showed a developing upper level low dropping southwestward
across interior Alaska today. After a midday break in accumulating
snowfall, the Pedro Dome Radar shows an area of steady snow shifting
west into Fairbanks as I type. This was captured in 12z guidance and
likely represents the bulk of accumulating snowfall (less than an
inch) for the Fairbanks area. It should only last a 4-6 hours before
easterly flow ushers in a drier air mass.

This easterly flow regime strengthens across most of the interior
this evening resulting in increased blowing snow concerns tonight
through Sunday in addition to widespread low level wind shear. Model
soundings continue to advertise a stable boundary layer that
prevents these stronger winds from mixing to the surface, except for
interior summits and portions of the Norton Sound Coastline. The
corridor of strongest winds gradually lifts north early next week
and appears to become focused along the Arctic Coastline Monday
night into Wednesday. Elsewhere, dry weather accompanies a gradual
warming trend early next week with temperatures warming above 0F
Tuesday or Wednesday.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...The extended forecast begins on Tuesday
with 1032 mb surface ridging over the Yukon Territories and a broad
low pressure across the North Pacific. Looking aloft, the Aleutian
low wobbles around the North Pacific as each wave pivots around the
parent low. The primary surface low at about 974 mb spins over the
eastern Aleutians with at least three shortwaves pivoting around it
through late next week. Each wave ushers in a progressively warmer
air mass and brings a chance for light precipitation across the
interior. Models differ on timing/magnitude of each wave, but the
ECMWF has been persistently more aggressive with back-to-back
systems late next week. Ensembles indicate low chances for light
snow or perhaps even mixed p-types Tuesday night through Friday
night.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
