Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Mostly quiet conditions will continue ahead of the
arrival of the remnants of Tropical Storm Kong-Rey. Light snow is
likely across the Arctic Coast and western Interior today and
across the Tanana Valley and southern Interior tonight. The
arrival of the remnants of Kong Rey will bring high winds and
mixed precipitation to the Yukon Delta Monday night and Tuesday
and to the southwest Interior on Tuesday and Wednesday. Strong gap
winds through Alaska Range passes and a strong Tanana Valley Jet
at Delta Junction are also expected Tuesday.

KEY MESSAGES...
Central and Eastern Interior...

- Breezy northeast winds in the Interior, especially in the Yukon
  River Valleys and Dalton Highway Summits which will continue
  through Sunday with gusts around 15-30 mph.
- Quiet and mostly cloudy conditions for Fairbanks and vicinity
  through Monday.
- Light snow moves into the southern Interior and Tanana Valley
  Sunday night and Monday with accumulations of less than 1 inch.
- Temperatures follow a slight cooling trend with lows largely in
  the single digits by Tuesday morning.
- Strong gap winds will develop over the Alaska Range Tuesday with
  the potential for gusts of 50 to 60 mph at both Isabel and
  Windy Pass.
- A strong Tanana Valley Jet will also develop with east winds
  gusting to around 50 mph near Delta Junction on Tuesday.
- Winds increase across Interior Summits on Tuesday with snow
  likely north of Fairbanks starting Tuesday night. Expect
  difficult travel conditions.
- Above freezing temperatures are likely Wednesday and Thursday in
  parts of the Tanana Valley. The highest probabilities are from
  Eielson AFB south to the Alaska Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...

- Light snow across most of the area south of Buckland to Shungnak
  on Sunday and Sunday night. Accumulations of 2 inches or less.
- Quiet and seasonably chilly weather prevails this weekend into
  the early part of next week.
- Effects from the remnants of Tropical Storm Kong-Rey will reach
  the central YK Delta Coast by late Monday night and Tuesday
  morning. Any coastal flood threats should me minimized as this
  track continues to favor offshore flow from the Yukon Delta
  north. Strong winds along the coast will be the primary
  concern, however with the tropical origins of this system,
  expect some of the precipitation to be mixed, with chances for
  freezing rain on Tuesday and Tuesday night along the coast south
  of Shaktoolik and from the Yukon Delta inland to the Lower
  Yukon. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued.

North Slope and Brooks Range...

- East winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph continue along the
  coast, but will slowly diminish Sunday. Falling snow today and
  Monday may still reduce visibility to around 2 miles at times.
- Snow likely along the Arctic Coast east of Utqiagvik and in the
  Arctic Plain through tonight. Up to an additional 2 inches of
  snow is likely through Monday.
- Next week's weather pattern will favor another extended period
  of strong east to northeast winds across the Arctic coastline.
  The strongest winds are likely Tuesday night and Wednesday in
  the eastern Arctic and may gust as high as 55 mph.

.DISCUSSION...A very broad trough aloft extends south from the
Arctic to encompass Mainland Alaska, the Aleutians, the Bering
Sea, and most of Central and Eastern Russia. Weather beneath this
trough is mostly quiet, save for east winds across the Arctic
Coast due to a very persistent Arctic high that lies over the
Anzhu Islands. The remnants of Tropical Storm Kong-Rey have been
caught up in a very strong, nearly 150 knot upper level jet south
of the trough. This will push the storm into Bristol Bay by early
Tuesday morning with the leading warm front reaching the Yukon
Delta very late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Models are
in much better agreement that the central pressure will be around
954 mb when the storm enters Bristol Bay, then fill to around 975
mb as it tracks north across the Yukon Delta before moving back
west over the Bering Sea. This track would not cause coastal
flooding concerns from the Yukon Delta north. Being a tropical
remnant, this storm is bringing an abundance of warm air with it
and will bring mixed precipitation to the Yukon Delta and Lower
Yukon Valley, hence the Winter Weather Advisories that have been
issued. Mixed precipitation may fall further inland towards
McGrath and Lake Minchumina as well, though confidence is lower,
amounts would be light, and that threat would not be until
Wednesday.

As the storm moves into Bristol Bay, a 13 mb pressure gradient
will set up across the Alaska Range on Tuesday, bringing strong
gap winds through Alaska Range Passes. A strong Tanana Valley Jet
is expected as well during this timeframe. As the warm front
pushes north, the Tanana Valley will likely be downsloped out of
much of any precipitation, but snow is expected in the Interior
from the White Mountains north on Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday
night.

Models are in good agreement on the pattern and forecast details.
We will use a blend of models and make a few hand edits on the
winds and precipitation type forecasts.

Extended Forecast For Days 4 Through 7...The remnants of Tropical
Storm Kong-Rey will continue to impact the area through Wednesday
night. On Thursday, the storm track shifts to bring a number of
strong lows into the Gulf of Alaska. This will keep Northern
Alaska pretty dry during the extended forecast period. The Arctic
high will persist, bringing continued east winds and periods of
blowing snow to the Arctic Coast. Temperatures will follow a
cooling trend across the area but remain near or above normal.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None. See discussion
above for information on the remnants of Tropical Storm Kong-Rey.
