Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Remnants of the ex-typhoon Ampil will move into the West Coast
tonight this afternoon and shift inland tonight and Wednesday,
bringing in strong south to southwest winds to 60+ mph for parts
of the coast, along with minor coastal flooding as it moves north
along the coast.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
Remnants of Ampil are moving into the W Bering Sea in the form of
an impressive occluded low. The low is currently at 965 mb over
the S Gulf of Anadyr with the gale force front moving into the N
Bering Sea and Saint Lawrence Island. High pressure over the
Mainland means it is drier today, with a departing upper trough
moving into Canada.

Forecast and Model Discussion...
Models are locked in and are showing little spread with the
remnants of ex-typhoon Ampil, so we are holding the course with no
changes. The low shifts inland Wed night and onshore west winds
will likely continue into Thu night. Expect blustery, cooler, and
wet conditions Thu and Fri for the Interior as the low moves
inland.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Today will be a brief reprieve in weather for the Interior as high
pressure is in place between storms. The next front quickly moves
in with more rainfall spreading west to east during the day
Wednesday. Expect strong south winds 30 to 45 mph in the Alaska
Range, but these will not be as strong as the prior chinook winds.
After that, autumn returns with blustery and cool southwest winds
and showers for Thu and Fri. It looks wet and breezy, especially
Thu.

West Coast and Western Interior...
No change in thinking with the front from the remnants of ex-
typhoon Ampil moving inland later today, and the low center moving
inland Wednesday and Wednesday night. Strong winds to 60 mph are
expected for the Bering Coast with gales moving into Norton
Sound, which will bring minor coastal flooding as water levels go
to 4 to 8 feet above the normal high tideline, slightly lower over
the YK Delta coast. Coastal flood advisories will remain in place
with no changes expected.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A Bering front will move across the Brooks Range tonight and will
bring strong south winds to the region with gusts to 45 mph
through the Brooks Range passes. Rain will move across the Arctic
as the low tracks northeast Wed night and Thu, with accumulating
snowfall over the Brooks Range above 4000 feet. The cold front
sweeps east on Thu night and Fri with chances for snow showers
across the Arctic.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
Cooler and showery for the weekend as a large trough is still over
the Mainland. Eventually the upper low weakens and drifts
southeast so this means it will be drying out somewhat by the end
of the weekend, as the Pacific storm track also shifts south.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None after days 3, see
current coastal flood advisories on the West Coast for the
current coastal storm Wednesday and Wednesday night.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Dry today then more rain moving west to east Wednesday, along with
a brief period of south winds through the AK Range to 45 mph. Rain
and blustery conditions with west winds take over on Thu and Fri.

.HYDROLOGY...
High waters continue to come down the Koyukuk from the recent
heavy rains, with water levels at or near bankfull. Water levels
should crest the next 24 hrs as water moves downstream. Minor
flooding in the basin along smaller streams and tributaries should
end in the next 24 hrs.

More rain moves in with the remnants of an ex-typhoon and will
bring rainfall to the Brooks Range, with 2 to 3 inches of rainfall
expected across the W Brooks Range, and 1 to 1.5 inches over the
Central Brooks Range. This will likely cause continued high water
over rivers draining the Brooks Range, although currently no
flooding is projected.

...Temperatures Near or Below Freezing This Morning...

Temperatures in the Eastern Interior will continue to drop
overnight with morning lows near or below 32F in many locations
from Tok to Northway north to the Yukon River. Areas of frost and
even some freezes are possible, especially in the Tanana and Yukon
Valleys. Temperatures will rebound this afternoon to around 60
degrees.
