.SYNOPSIS...
Two storms will impact the CWA between now through Monday, with
Wind and heavy rain for the west coast and mostly wind for the
Interior. One storm is exiting over the Eastern Brooks Range,
then the next storm moves into the west coast and Western
Interior today and Sunday. Flooding rainfall is possible across
the Seward peninsula and the western Brooks Range, while strong
winds are possible in the Alaska Range on Sunday. Rain will linger
over the west coast on Monday, then a third storm could impact
the west coast Tuesday into Wednesday.
.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...Another strong upper low will form
over the western Bering on Saturday. A shortwave will enhance
showers over the Western Interior on Saturday. The developing
upper low will also lift northeastward toward the Seward
peninsula by Sunday afternoon. A Longwave trough will persist
over much of the state on Monday. The shortwave will slowly
move over the Interior on Monday. The remnants of the Typhoon
moves near Eastern Russia on Tuesday.
Central and Eastern Interior...Rain is exiting over
the northern Interior this morning. More rain showers expected
over the western Interior on Saturday, then moving over
the Middle Tanana Valley in the afternoon/evening. The gradient
tightens again on Sunday with more gusty chinook flow expected.
High wind watches are in effect for the potential of 70 mph gusts
in the Alaska Range on Sunday. Sunday looks to be a warm day in
the 70s over the Central Interior and 80s over the Eastern
Interior, before cooling down on Monday with a good chance for
rain.
West Coast and Western Interior...Two storms will bring copious
amounts of rain to the Seward Penn and northwest Alaska now
through Monday. Flood watches still in effect with concerns
for the Kobuk River. Additional precipitation through Monday is
expected to be between 1 to 3 inches along the southern slopes of
the western Brooks Range. 1 to 2 inches of rainfall over the
Seward Penn. Expect rapid rises and flooding along smaller rivers
and streams draining the western Brooks Range through the weekend.
Heavy rainfall will also cause the Kobuk River to rise through
next week, with the river potentially reaching flood stage by
early next week. Will continue to Monitor. Rain may diminish some
over northwest Alaska on Saturday but more rain expected on
Sunday. A third storm, remnants of Typhoon Ampil will impact
the west coast Tuesday into Wednesday. Will continue to
monitor this system for the potential for elevated surf and minor
coastal flood threats.
North Slope and Brooks Range...The first storm is exiting over
the eastern Brooks Range this morning. The next system will
spread rain over the Range on Saturday then over the north slope
Saturday night into Sunday. Strong westerly flow over the slope
will become northeastly on Sunday as the next low tracks into
the Bering Strait. Weak low pressure will persist over the slope
on Monday.
Extended Forecast Days 4-7...As the second of the two lows begins
to depart on Sunday, guidance currently shows a period of broad,
weak troughing across much of Alaska on Monday and Tuesday. This
could keep the hazards to a relative minimum during the early part
of next week. Typhoon Ampil is expected to transition into the high
latitudes by the middle of the week. Guidance remains rather
consistent in showing the initial path of the low into the western
Bering Sea. This path could potentially be favorable for high
surf and potentially coastal flooding in the Norton Sound and YK
Delta.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...High surf is expected in
the Norton Sound on Sunday as the second coastal storm passes by
and surface winds increase out of the west. The third storm on
Tuesday could bring more elevated waters to much of the west
coast and Gale-Force winds.
.FIRE WEATHER...Warm and dry weather continues across the eastern
Interior and the Alcan region through the day on Sunday. Relative
humidity will reach 30 percent on Saturday with temperatures
warming into the 70s, while things will warm and dry a step
further with highs reaching the 80s on Sunday. Cooler temperatures
will follow Monday and much of next week.
.HYDROLOGY...Additional precipitation through Monday is expected
to be between 1 to 3 inches across the area, with the heaviest
rainfall amounts expected along the southern slopes of the western
Brooks Range. Expect rapid rises and flooding along smaller
rivers and streams draining the western Brooks Range through the
weekend. Heavy rainfall will also cause the Kobuk River to rise
through next week, with the river potentially reaching flood stage
by early next week. Additional 1 to 2 inches possible for the
Seward Penn and Western Interior.
