.SYNOPSIS...

High pressure ridging continues over the Interior and Blizzard
Warnings continue for the Bering Strait through early this
afternoon. Additionally, the stretch from Point Lay to Point Hope
will continue to see elevated winds and blowing snow today and
possibly into early next week. Active weather continues over
western Alaska as a front and multiple shortwaves move through.
Widespread precipitation will extend across most of the West Coast
and Western Interior. Heavy snow moves into the lower Yukon
Valley late tonight and will persist through late Monday
night/early Tuesday morning. Winds will ramp up again through the
passes of the Alaska Range Monday afternoon.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper level ridging remains over the Interior and a 496 dam low
exists in the western Bering. The ridge is keeping conditions
across the Interior mostly clear and dry with above average
temperatures for most areas. Meanwhile, active weather returns to
the western coast with the approach of a front extending off the
Bering low. Widespread precipitation will work its way north
starting this afternoon. This is likely to be a long duration
snowfall as surface lows developing within the front move across
western Alaska. Additionally, the ridge will begin breaking down
and pushing east as troughing moves in. Southerly flow will ramp
up again over the Alaska Range Tuesday into Wednesday as the
pressure.

Central and Eastern Interior...

The Central ad Eastern Interior will remain in the same pattern
through Monday. A front and multiple embedded surface lows move
across the western coast of Alaska, effectively aiding in breaking
down the ridge throughout the week. The pressure gradient between
the western troughing and eastern ridging will tighten right over
the Alaska Range. This, coupled with shortwaves passing over the
Range will result in increased with speeds, with gusts 50 to 60
mph expected in the passes.

North Slope and Brooks Range...

High pressure remains over the Chukchi Sea, with a trough extend
from the high Arctic dipping down over the North Slope. This will
keep the strong winds in place over the northwest coast, from
Point Lay to Point Hope and blowing snow will continue over the
next couple of days. Cloud cover extends across much of the North
Slope and snow is expected to move into the eastern portions of
the region later this morning.

West Coast and Western Interior...

Blizzard Warnings remain in effect for Gambell, Wales, and
Diomede through early this afternoon. A front extending off a
Bering Sea low moves in from the southwest today, bringing another
round of widespread precipitation. Primarily, this will be snow,
however, there is a chance from some mixed precipitation along the
Yukon Delta coast this afternoon. There are a series of embedded
lows developing along the front(s) that will keep persistent snow
over the area through mid-week.

Extended Forecast For Days 4 Through 7...

Active weather returns to a slew of areas across Alaska as
multiple fronts and lows push into southwestern Alaska and work
their way north, breaking down the ridge and pushing it east into
Canada by late week. The main forecast challenges in the long term
are timing each short wave and front as they bring rounds of
precipitation out west. Broad low pressure will take over much of
the Bering Sea and a large chunk of the State, with an Arctic
ridge settling in over the northern coast.

...Long Duration Snowfall and Chance for Blowing Snow through
Tuesday Night...

A strong low pressure system will bring a large amount of moisture
over the west coast through Tuesday. Long duration, widespread
snowfall is expected across the west Coast and western Interior
through Tuesday night. Pockets of heavy snow expected inland from
the Nulato Hills south to Russian Mission. Winds will remain
below advisory criteria, however, some blowing/drifting snow is
possible along the coastal areas. There may be a brief period of
mixed precipitation along the southern west coast, around the
Yukon Delta area, though mostly snow is expected.

...Temperatures Above Freezing on Tuesday Over The Interior...

Strong southerly chinook winds blowing across the Alaska Range
will ramp up again Tuesday and Wednesday. This will cause
temperatures to rise above freezing on Tuesday over most
of the Middle Tanana Valley. High temperatures in the mid to
upper 30s around Fairbanks and mid to upper 40s near the Alaska
Range. These warm temperatures will cause walking and driving
surfaces to become slippery. Slightly cooler on Wednesday and
Thursday, with temps in the upper 20s to low 30s.
