.SYNOPSIS…
Trough over the Central Interior has developed a cutoff upper
low, which will remain over the area through the end of the week,
prior to moving east of the ALCAN Border later this weekend. As
this gyrates over the region, a pool of very cold air will remain
beneath the upper low. With a surface high pressure developing
beneath it, we will see this cold air get trapped below and reach
the surface. Thus, extremely cold conditions will remain into the
weekend. Some areas already saw -40 or colder overnight last
night, but the next two days are expected to be the coldest of the
week. Thus, we can expect many more to reach -40 or colder
tonight. These may be the coldest temperatures that we have seen
all winter, or even in a few winters for some. With this pattern
in place, much of the Mainland will remain dry and mostly clear
through this stretch, aside from the Arctic and West Coasts. Along
the Arctic Coast, a frontal boundary has stalled out and is
slowly decaying, with the remaining forcing allowing for periodic
light snow showers through the remainder of the week. This,
coupled with gusty winds at times, will lead to areas of blowing
snow, reducing visibilities, especially near Barter Island. Thus,
a Blizzard Warning remains through today. Along the West Coast, a
weak low pressure system has moved through, which brought some
light snow and gusty winds throughout the YK Delta. Thus, Winter
Weather and Wind Chill Advisories were issued for that, but the
system as since moved through and winds have started to decrease,
allowing the products to expire.

.DISCUSSION...
Synoptic Analysis and Forecast...
At the 500 mb level, we see a 502 dam upper low that has cutoff
from the flow, spinning over the Central Interior through the next
few days. This low overhead has set the stage for very cold
weather through the Interior, lasting into the weekend. This
cutoff low will serve as a pool of very cold air over the
Interior, with a large area of -30 to -40 temperatures at 850 mb
sitting over the Central Interior, especially through the next two
days. This weekend, we will start to see the return of southerly
flow along the West Coast, as weak upper ridging over the Bering
Sea propagates east. This will get stronger through the weekend,
with quite the increase in temperatures expected along the West
Coast and parts of the Western Interior next week. We are
expecting much of the Mainland to see at least slight increases in
temperatures later this weekend and beyond, as warm advection
reaches deeper into Alaska. Although, the wind and chances for
precipitation will also return along the West Coast with southerly
flow.
Surface high pressure builds over much of the Mainland, with the
surface pressure at 1022 mb currently, strengthening to near 1040
mb by the end of the week. High pressure, with very cold
temperatures just above the ground, will allow for dry and calm
conditions, where temperatures are expected to plummet each night.
This may be some of the coldest weather that we have seen so far
this season, where some locations will be reaching close to the
-50 mark. As is usually the case, if we manage to get residual
cloud cover over the next few days, we may be able to avoid some
of these extremely low temperatures. Also, if we develop dense ice
fog throughout valley locations, then that may help temperatures
from dropping to these extreme values. Confidence on these
scenarios remains low, as guidance continues to trend very cold
throughout. Thursday night through Friday would be the best chance
to get some cloud cover. While there will be little to no winds
through much of the Interior, especially in valley locations, this
is very hazardous cold that will be here to stay through the
remainder of the week and into the weekend. Bundle up Alaska!
North Slope and Brooks Range…
Moderate to heavy snow will remain for parts of the North Slope
today, slowly decreasing in coverage this evening. Although, winds
remain quite gusty, especially for areas east of Dead Horse.
Strong winds and fresh/falling snow has resulted in areas of
blowing snow, where visibilities are falling close to a quarter of
a mile or less. Thus, the Blizzard Warning will remain for Point
Thompson through Barter Island today, as the winds will stick
around into tonight. Will continue to monitor and update
accordingly, as breezy conditions are expected to remain through
the night. Cloud cover and snowfall over the next few days will
allow temperatures to moderate through the remainder of the week,
while the Arctic air returns to areas south of the Brooks Range.
Precipitation chances will be focused along the Arctic Coast, but
little accumulation is expected beyond today.
West Coast and Western Interior…
Very cold air returns to parts of the Western Interior, as high
pressure and the cold dome dominate the area. The cold will remain
through the end of the week, but areas directly along the coast
and open water will see warmer temperatures than those inland.
Bulk of the southerly flow will move in this weekend, where a
drastic warming trend is currently forecast. Tomorrow, we will see
the start to a breezy stretch of weather along the West Coast as
well, especially those where Gap Winds are common, such as
Unalakleet. With plenty of dry air in place and easterly winds, we
will remain dry into the weekend. We will start to see better
moisture flux into the area on Saturday/Sunday, where
precipitation chances increase in the YK Delta and slowly push
north beyond that.
Central and Eastern Interior…
The Arctic air has returned to much of the Interior. The upper
level low has cut off over the Interior, which will be the main
contribution for cold through the remainder of the week. High
pressure has also developed at the surface, strengthening through
the end of the week. With a pool of very cold air aloft and
subsidence from the surface high, hazardous cold has returned. We
will generally see days in the -20s/-30s and nights reaching back
into the -40s or colder. This stretch of cold might end up being
colder than the recent, as guidance has been quite aggressive with
it, with the potential for many reaching close to -50. The 850 mb
temperatures that were described above will support the extreme
cold through the Interior. With high pressure overhead, the winds
will be relatively light, keeping the wind chill values near the
actual air temperature. Although, if it is -40 without the wind,
it is still extremely cold and hazardous. We will remain dry in
the Interior through the weekend.
Extended Forecast Days 4-7…
Models are in decent agreement with the upper level low decaying,
with weak ridging over the Bering slowly building and pushing
east. Although, guidance starts to diverge as we get to the
weekend with the strength of the approaching ridge. Much of this
will be dependent on the trough of low pressure that weakens and
pushes east through the week, as it has cutoff over the Central
Interior. Also, long term guidance shows a weak wave passing
through the West Coast, suppressing the ridge. In either case,
guidance does favor a ridge moving in from the West Coast later in
the week/weekend. As this ridge pushes inland, we will start to
see systems in the Bering Sea push closer to the coast, increasing
winds and precipitation chances. Thus, an active pattern is
expected to set up over the West this weekend through next week,
along with inducing stronger southerly flow. This would allow for
a warm up for much of the west, and possibly into the Interior.
While there still remains some uncertainties, there is hope to get
rid of the extreme cold for a bit.
