Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...A very strong storm over the Northern Bering Sea will
move over the Southern Chukchi Sea this afternoon, then northwest
of Utqiagvik on Tue and north of Kaktovik on Wed. A weather front
trailing this storm will move over the West Coast today, then
over the Western North Slope and Western Interior lat tonight,
then over the Eastern North Slope and Eastern Interior on Tue and
move east of the ALCAN Border on Wed. Blizzard conditions will
return to the north slope Tuesday into Wednesday. Snow and
blowing snow expected for much of the Interior and Alaska Range
Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

.DISCUSSION...
Analysis and Forecast Discussion...
A strong shortwave will push across the west coast today, then
the north slope and Interior on Tuesday over the Interior. Upper
level ridging will build over the western portion of the state
on Wednesday. The upper high will retrograde to the west Thursday
and Friday. Very cold air will filter over the eastern portion
of the state over the weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Surface low will track into
the western Arctic and track to the northeast. Southwest gales
and blizzard conditions will spread to the Western North Slope
this evening, to the Central north Slope late tonight and to the
Eastern North Slope on Tue. Strong westerly winds will ramp
up on Tuesday and continue into Wed. Blizzard warnings are in
effect for the north slope Tuesday into Wed morning.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A strong storm now in the Western Bering Sea will move into the
Central Chukchi Sea this afternoon, to north of Utqiagvik on
Tuesday and then well north of Kaktovik on Wed. This storm will
bring southerly winds of 40 to 50 mph to most of the West Coast
today, with gusts 60 to 70 mph along Western Capes. South winds
gusting 50 to 75 mph are now occuring over the Bering Strait and
will spread to the remainder of the West Coast this afternoon with
winds turning southwest and decreasing slowly along the west
coast tonight. Heavy snow also expected over the Seward Penn and
northwest of Ambler. Winter storm warnings are in effect for much
of the west coast. There will be mixed snow and freezing rain
around Mcgrath this afternoon into Tuesday. There will be a
slight chance of freezing rain over the Central Interior south of
Nenana Tue AM. Snow and winds will taper off late Tuesday morning.
High pressure will build in behind this system Wednesday through
Friday finally putting an end to the active pattern for the past
week.

Central and Eastern
Interior...Snow accumulation last night around 4 inches around
the area. Another band of snow on the radar this afternoon.
Snow expected to continue through tonight then pick up in
intensity on Tuesday. Strong winds will also ramp up on Tuesday
over the hills and in the Alaska Range causing blowing snow
and low visibility. Winter weather advisories are in effect for
much of the Central Interior through Wed morning. Highs warming up
Monday and Tuesday as more clouds and precip expected. Another
shortwave will bring in moisture from the southwest and expecting
snow accumulations around 3 to 6 inches for the Central Interior
with higher amounts over the hills east of Fairbanks. Turning
colder Wed night into Friday with lows 15 to 25 below over much
of the Interior. Even colder lows expected over the weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...A strong storm now
in the Western Bering Sea will move into the Central Chukchi Sea
this afternoon, to north of Utqiagvik on Tuesday and then well
north of Kaktovik on Wed. This storm will bring southerly winds of
40 to 50 mph to most of the West Coast today, with gusts 60 to 70
mph along Western Capes. This is expected to cause water levels
along the coast to rise 3 to 5 feet from The YK Delta north to
Kivalina today and tonight. This will likely cause water to flow
on top of the sea ice and river ice near the coast, and could
cause minor flooding of low lying areas near the coast.

Another concern is that since sea ice fractured and pushed
offshore in many area from the east winds of the past several
days, that the south to southwest winds today and Tue could cause
ice to push onshore (called an Ivu) in many areas, especially
north of Scammon Bay along the coast to Shaktoolik.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 Through 7...High pressure rebuilds
over the west coast and unsettled weather and winds possible for
the north slope and Brooks range later in the week. Cold air will
filter into the Interior as the high retrogrades to the west by
the weekend.

...Minor Coastal Flooding And Ice Push Possible Today Into
This Evening...

A strong storm now in the Central Chukchi Sea will move to north
of Utqiagvik this afternoon and then well north of Kaktovik on
Wed. This storm will bring West gales to most of the Western
Arctic Coast as it moves east. This is expected to cause water
levels along the coast to rise 3 feet above normal through late
this evening. This will likely cause water to flow on top of the
sea ice and river ice near the coast, and could cause minor
flooding of low lying areas near the coast.

Another concern is that sea ice is fractured and pushed offshore
in many area from the east winds of the past several days, and
that southwest winds could cause ice to push onshore (called an
Ivu) in many areas, especially in areas that have developed open
water leads near shore.

Flooding of infrastructure is not expected but people should move
valuables to higher ground. People should be alert for water
pushing on top of snow machine trails that run over ice or along
the coast. People should be alert for ice pushing onto beach areas
and the possibility that ice could push inland in some areas.
