Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Fairbanks AK
650 AM AKST Sun Jan 14 2024
.SYNOPSIS...
Northern Alaska will remain in a very stormy pattern through Tue
night. This is causing conditions to warm to above normal over
most of Alaska today, and remain warmer than normal into Tue.
A cooling trend is expected late this week.
One storm moving north over Alaska today is bringing light snow
to much of Northern AK south of the Brooks Range today. A chance
of snow will spread to the North Slope tonight, while snow
diminishes south of the Brooks Range tonight. Strong east winds
and blizzard conditions over the North Slope will diminish late
this afternoon as winds decrease there when the storm moves north.
Another strong storm developing to the western Bering Sea today
will move to the Northern Bering Sea tonight, then into the
Central Chukchi Sea on Mon and then north of Utqiagvik on Tue.
This storm will bring heavy snow, and blizzard conditions to
most of Western Alaska starting late tonight or early Monday, and
could bring snow and blizzard conditions to the North Slope Mon PM
into Tue. This could also bring snow to the Eastern Interior Mon
night and Tue with 3 to 6 inches possible, including at Fairbanks.
This second storm is expected to bring south winds of 50 to 70 to
the West Coast of Alaska on Monday and could cause a storm surge
of 4 to 6 feet along West Coast from the Yukon Delta north to
Point Hope Mon PM into Tue PM. This will likely cause water to
flow on top of the sea ice and river ice near the coast, and could
cause minor flooding of low lying areas near the coast. Flooding
of infrastructure is not expected but people should move valuables
to higher ground.
Aloft...
The long wave pattern consisting of s strong ridge over the
Eastern Pacific, Eastern Bering and Alaska with a strong trough
over the Western Bering Sea. This pattern will start to retrograde
Tue through the end of the week with a strong ridge building over
the Bering Sea and Alaska lat this week. A series of very strong
short waves troughs are making their way NE over Alaska in this
flow, and bringing moisture and stormy conditions with them
through Tue.
Surface...
A low pressure trough over the North Slope of Alaska will weaken
this evening.
A 987 mb low over the Yukon Delta will move to 100
NM west of Point Hope as a 992 mb low by 3pm Sun, and to 200 NM
north of Point Hope as a 998 mb low by 3am Mon, then weaken. An
occluded front stretching from this low to the Southeast Interior
will move north to along the Arctic Coast tonight then continue
north and weaken. This is bringing snow north with it. As the
front moves north of the Arctic Coast tonight winds will decrease
there.
A strong low developing in the Western Bering Sea today will move
to 200 NM southwest of Gambell as a 982 mb low by 3am Mon, to 200
NM west of Point Hope as a 984 mb low by 3pm Mon, and to 200 NM
northwest of Utqiagvik as a 996 mb low by 3pm Tue. This will bring
Snow and blizzard conditions to the West Coast late tonight and
spread into the Western Interior and Western Arctic on Mon, and
then east across the Interior and North Slope Mon night and Tue.

.DISCUSSION...
At 00Z, models initialize 10-20 meters to low on 500 mb heights
of the ridge aloft over Nrn AK. Models show similar solutions
aloft through Tue, with increasing differences in short wave
timing and strength from Wed into next weekend. Will sue a blend
of models for features aloft.
850 mb temperatures range from -6C over the West Coast of Alaska
to -24C to -28C along the ALCAN Border. The colder air pushes
east today as a weather front moves NE across Northern AK and
cause surface temperatures to rise over the Eastern Interior and
North Slope . See 850 MB temps rise to near freezing along the
West Coast early Mon into Mon Afternoon, and over the SW Interior
Mon PM. This will bring a chance of mixed precip to the West Coast
from the Bering Strait south early Mon into Mon afternoon, and to
the SW Interior Mon PM. 850 mb temps of -20C sweep across NW AK
Tue and over the North Slope and Interior on Wed. This will bring
a cold second half of the week to the Interior and North Slope.
With precipitation, models show similar patterns today into Tue.
Will use a blend of models for precip through Tue. Highlights are:
Snow over most of Northern AK southwest of Kotzebue to Eagle will
move north to the Brooks Range today, and then bring a chance of
snow to the North Slope tonight while snow diminishes south of the
Brooks Range tonight. Will get 1-2 inches of snow most areas from
the Brooks Range south today. Next storm will bring snow to St
Lawrence Is and the YK Delta tonight, and to the West Coast
southwest of McGrath to the Bering Strait after midnight tonight,
then over all the West Coast and Western Interior on Mon, then
spreading to the North Slope and Eastern Interior Mon night into
Tue. Will see snow mix with rain or freezing rain along the West
Coast from the Bering Strait south early Mon into Mon afternoon,
and to the SW Interior Mon PM. Expect 4-8 inches of snow along the
West Coast and Western Interior north of St Michael and Galena
from Late tonight into Mon night with up to 12 inches southwest
facing slopes. Expect up to one tenth inch of freezing rain SW of
McGrath to the Bering Strait. For Mon night into Tue expect 3-6
inches of snow across the Eastern Interior, and 2-4 inches across
the North Slope. Snow tapers off over the West Coast and Western
Interior on Tue and over the North Slope and Eastern Interior Tue
night with mainly dry conditions Wed into next weekend.
At the surface at 06Z, the low over the YK Delta was 2-3 mb deeper
than models verified, but similar on other features. Models show
similar solutions a the surface through Tue. Will use the NAM for
details.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
A strong storm developing to the western Bering Sea today will
move to the Northern Bering Sea tonight, then into the Central
Chukchi Sea on Mon and then north of Utqiagvik on Tue. This storm
will bring south winds of 50 to 70 to the West Coast of Alaska on
Monday and could cause a storm surge of 4 to 6 feet along West
Coast from the Yukon Delta north to Point Hope Mon PM into Tue PM.
This will likely cause water to flow on top of the sea ice and
river ice near the coast, and could cause minor flooding of low
lying areas near the coast. Flooding of infrastructure is not
expected but people should move valuables to higher ground.
