.SYNOPSIS...
Active weather continues across parts of western and northern
Alaska this morning as one low pressure center weakens in the
north Bering while another tracks into the southern Bering from
the north Pacific. This second system will keep conditions
unsettled from the Seward Peninsula south towards the lower Yukon
where a wintry mix of snow and rain will continue through the day.
Conditions will then settle down some for most of the area
Wednesday as temps drop back a degree or two, but still remain
rather warm for this time of the year. Wednesday night into
Thursday will see the next wave of active weather come this
direction as a storm in the northern Gulf of Alaska pushes
northwards and an Arctic cold front drops in from the north. This
will bring some snow to the interior as well as storm force winds
along the Arctic coastline. At the same time temps will drop
significantly as more normal winter-like conditions will be in
place by the weekend.

CENTRAL AND EASTERN INTERIOR...
- Gusty winds continue with wind gusts up to 60 mph possible in
Windy and Isabel Passes and up to 50 mph at Delta Junction
through later this afternoon.
- Above-normal temperatures expected to remain for the next few

- Temperatures gradually cool during the middle to end of the week as
snow chances return.
- An arctic cold front will bring seasonably cold temps to much of the
area over the weekend.
WEST COAST AND WESTERN INTERIOR...
- Messy conditions continue across most of the area.

NORTH SLOPE AND BROOKS RANGE...
- Light snow is expected in the Brooks Range through the morning hours.
- Chinook conditions expected for much of the west-central North Slope
today with strong south winds through the
Brooks Range Passes along with much above normal temperatures.
- Storm force easterly winds develop Wednesday night through
Thursday night when blizzard conditions will be possible east of
Utqiagvik, especially near Deadhorse. This will likely be an
extended period of hazardous conditions with low visibility and
extensive blowing snow that may last through the weekend.
ANALYSIS...
The primary features affecting our region this morning continue
to be a nearly stationary upper trough extending from eastern
Siberia into the Bering and an anonymously strong upper ridge
stretching northwards along the west coast of North American and
into eastern Alaska. We can thank the ridge for the recent run of
above normal temperatures while the trough out west continues to
keep unsettled and rather messy weather ongoing across western
parts of the state.
Down at the surface we are currently tracking yet another surface low
into the southern Bering this morning as it rides along the
periphery of the long wave upper trough. This system will bring an
additional round of mixed precipitation to western locations
(mainly from the Seward Peninsula southward) through the remainder
of the day. By Wednesday most of the precipitation should have
shifted offshore. Further to the east we will still deal with
stronger Chinook flow over the Alaska Range. Guidance continues
to show the wind speeds gradually decreasing by later this
evening, but as a precaution we will keep the Wind Advisory for
that location ongoing for a bit longer.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK...(Thursday through Monday)
While Wednesday will be a rather quiet day by Alaskan standards,
a pattern change will begin to unfold. The ridge across the east
will begin to shift south as an upper trough tracks from the
northern coast of the Northwest Territories westward through the
Yukon and over the central interior of Alaska. This will
essentially help drive an Arctic cold front southwards Thursday
and Friday bringing much colder air into the region by the
weekend. Meanwhile most of the longer range global models indicate
a weak low tracking north into the interior by Thursday. While
there are some differences in how much moisture will make it into
the interior, most solutions do indicate at least some interior
snowfall for the Thursday/Friday time frame. The ECMWF solutions
favor the most snowfall with the GFS and Canadian solutions being
somewhat more conservative.
Meanwhile the most impactful conditions during the extended period
will likely unfold along the Arctic coastline and portions of the
North Slope. With a strong Arctic High setting up in the Beaufort
sea, the pressure gradient should strengthen enough to induce
very strong easterly surface flow starting Wednesday night and
continuing into Friday morning. While model consensus has backed
off overall wind speeds just a bit over the past few runs, storm
force winds still appear to be a good bet. Considerable blowing
snow could lead to blizzard conditions by Thursday. As such a
Winter Storm Watch remains in effect at the moment with a
potential to upgrade this to a Blizzard Warning should confidence
in this solution remain high with future model runs.
