* IMPACTS...Travel will be very difficult. Widespread blowing 
  snow could significantly reduce visibility.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are
expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds
and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout
conditions, making travel extremely difficult.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
An active weather pattern continues as we start the new week. A
series of low pressures will continue to track north into the
Bering the next couple of days. This will continue to result in
snow and rain for most of western Alaska. As such, winter weather
advisories and warnings remain in effect. Winter conditions will
also be expanding north into the Brooks Range and along the
Arctic coast later today as well. Meanwhile warmer temps continue
to spread across much of the region as a result of southerly flow.
This will change later this week as an Arctic cold front tracks
south over the interior, allowing for noticeably colder conditions
and likely some interior snow. Behind this front winds will
become very strong along the Arctic coast and could lead to
blizzard conditions by later this week.

.KEY MESSAGES...

CENTRAL AND EASTERN INTERIOR...
- Gusts up to 65 mph possible in Windy Pass, up to 70 mph in Isabel
Pass, and up to 60 mph in Delta Junction through Monday afternoon.

- A brief burst of snow is expected with a warm front passage on
Monday afternoon/evening across the north-central interior,
including Bettles but amounts are expected to be less than 2 inches.

- Above-normal temperatures expected through next week with the
warmest temps expected today when the West Coast, YK Delta, and
south-central interior warm above freezing.

- Temperatures gradually cool during the middle to end of the week
as snow chances return, mainly to the east-central interior.

- An arctic cold front will bring seasonably cold temps to much of the
  area over the weekend.

WEST COAST AND WESTERN INTERIOR...
- Blowing snow is likely in Kotzebue with visibility to one-half
mile expected through the morning hours.

- Light snow mixes with or transitions to rain from south to north
tonight through Monday night, especially at sea level. Thoroughly
frozen soils should be able to freeze this light rainfall, even with
air temperatures sneaking above freezing.

- Temperatures cool back below freezing late Tuesday night into
Wednesday.

NORTH SLOPE AND BROOKS RANGE...
- Blowing snow continues from Point Lay south through Monday
afternoon with a Winter Weather Advisory remaining in effect through
12 PM Monday.

- Easterly winds increase to 30-45 mph along the Arctic Coast
through the day. The strongest winds expected near Kaktovik
where a Winter Weather Advisory was issued for reduced visibility
through midnight tonight.

- Snow moves into the western Brooks Rang and the NW Arctic Coast
  on this morning, reaching the central Brooks Range later in the day
  today.

- Chinook conditions expected for much of the west-central North
Slope Monday night and Tuesday with strong south winds through the
Brooks Range Passes and well as much above normal temperatures.

- Storm force easterly winds develop Wednesday night through
Thursday night when blizzard conditions will be possible east of
Utqiagvik, especially near Deadhorse.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper ridging remains in place across much of central and eastern
Alaska with an active upper low positioned over the Bering Sea.
Currently a surface low has managed to move into the southern
Bering as of this morning with the center of circulation just
southeast of St George island. This feature will continue to track
north and slowly fill over the next 24 hours. However it is this
feature that is producing the snow and rain across western Alaska
today as well as having a hand in the generation of strong winds
over the Alaska and eventually Brooks ranges. As this initial
surface low fills, a second surface low will follow a similar path
into the Bering Tuesday and Wednesday. Thus the unsettled weather
looks to continue for a couple of more days.

Temps will likely be warmest today as deep south and southeast
flow continue to result in WAA. However the second low will not be
as strong, thus temps will settle back a degree or two in most
spots into the middle of the week.

In the extended range, a transition back to more seasonal
temperatures can be expected. The upper ridge will start to get
broken down and slip back south as an upper trough over northwest
Canada begins to build westwards towards the upper low over the
Bering. This will bring in a decent Arctic cold front that should
push into the interior by Thursday, thus allowing for colder temps
heading into the weekend. Both the GFS and the ECMWF are coming
into agreement that another round of measurable snowfall will
reach the central and eastern interior Thursday and Friday as some
overrunning sets up in the post frontal environment. One of the
biggest concerns for the extended will be the potential for very
strong easterly winds along the Arctic coast. A strong Arctic high
will settle over the Beaufort Sea. At the same time several
surface lows will track east into the Gulf. The pressure gradient
will be strongest Thursday and Friday with the potential for
widespread storm force winds along the Arctic coastline.
