.SYNOPSIS...A storm moving into the Bering and the Yukon Delta
will bring another round of snow, mixed precipitation, and gusty
winds to portions of the West Coast late tonight into Saturday.
The Interior will see below normal temperatures and chances of
snow over the weekend as an upper level trough moves westward
across the Arctic. Winds will increase across the Arctic Slope
today and will remain strong through Sunday. Another system will
impact the West Coast on Monday as a ridge attempts to build in
over the Aleutians and Bering Sea and will bring chances of
precipitation to portions of the Interior as it rides the periphery
of the ridge. Upper level ridging then looks to amplify across
the Bering Sea near midweek, with low pressure looking to persist
across the Interior and Gulf of Alaska.

Analysis and Forecast Discussion...
Ridging aloft remains situated across the central Interior today,
while a trough of low pressure is situated over the Yukon and
Northwest Territories of Canada and troughing persists along the
Bering Sea. The trough over northern Canada will start to retrograde
towards the Arctic Coast tonight and Saturday. Meanwhile, a
series of strong short wave troughs will continue to move
northward over Bering Sea and West Coast through Saturday. By
Sunday, upper level ridging starts to nudge into the Aleutians and
Bering Sea, however a shortwave riding its periphery will allow
for another system to impact the West Coast on Monday.
At the surface, high pressure remains situated across northern
Canada and the Arctic while a low in the Bering Sea continues
weaken as it tracks northward. Another low south of the Aleutians
will strengthen and move into the Bering Sea and Yukon Peninsula
tonight into Saturday, bringing another round of precipitation and
gusty winds to the southwest coast of Alaska. Overall, this
system is trending a bit weaker than the previous system and
expect the main impacts to lie along the Yukon Delta and the
Seward Peninsula.
Model guidance is in decent agreement with the overall weather
pattern in the short term as the latest GFS runs have also come
more in line with the ECMWF and CMC for late in the weekend and
into early next week. Thus, have maintained a blend of models
through the short term and trended close to the ensemble means
for precipitation amounts- especially across the Interior.
North Slope and Brooks Range...Winds have already started to
increase along the North Slope today and will continue to
strengthen tonight into Saturday. The highest winds will generally
remain east of Prudhoe Bay and could gust to 60 to 70 mph at
times through the weekend. Visibility to one half a mile to near
white out conditions will be possible in areas of blowing snow.
Winter weather headlines remain in effect for portions of the
Arctic Slope through Sunday afternoon.
West Coast and Western Interior...Conditions will remain stormy
along the West Coast, especially across the Yukon Delta and
Seward Peninsula tonight into Saturday as another low pressure
system tracks into the Bering Sea and into the Yukon Delta. Gusty
winds and additional rounds of snow, mixed precipitation, and
blowing snow will be possible through the day Saturday. 2-4 inches
of additional snow are possible along the Yukon Delta, with 3-6
inches possible along the Seward Peninsula. Snow could transition
to rain snow mix at times and winds may gust to 50 mph. As such,
multiple winter weather headlines remain in place through Saturday
afternoon for the Yukon and Seward Peninsulas. Conditions will
gradually ease on Sunday, however another system looks to impact
the West Coast on Monday.
Central and Eastern Interior...With low pressure moving into the
Yukon Delta on Saturday and the pressure gradient increasing
across the Interior, can expect winds along the Dalton Highway
Summits to increase starting Saturday morning. The upper trough
moving west across northern Alaska over the weekend may bring some
chances of snow to portions of the Interior - starting Saturday
night and persisting into Sunday. Overall accumulations look to
remain rather light - generally between 1-2 inches for most areas.
However, the combination of gusty winds and snowfall may warrant
headlines along the Highway Summits over the weekend. Temperatures
generally look to remain cooler than normal along the Eastern
Interior through the weekend and closer to near normal for the
Central Interior.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
Extended Forecast for Days 4 Through 7...Guidance slowly trending
in better agreement with the overall weather pattern next week as
the latest GFS solutions slowly come more in line with the ECMWF
and the CMC. High pressure aloft will continue to attempt building
into the Aleutians and Bering Sea early next week, but will be
dampened as an upper level shortwave rides its periphery and
pushes some moisture into the Interior Tuesday and Wednesday,
which could increase snow chances should these solutions come to
fruition. Guidance then trends at the upper level high amplifying
over the Bering Sea mid to late week, with low pressure generally
persisting across the Eastern Interior and Gulf of Alaska. Will
have to see how guidance continues to trend over the coming days.
For now, have maintained temperatures near normal across the
Interior for much of the extended, with chances of precipitation.
Meanwhile, have maintained temperatures below normal across the
Arctic and close to slightly above normal along the West Coast
for now.
