Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A powerful low in the North Pacific is poised to move from Bristol
Bay to the Interior and then to the North Slope through the
weekend. This storm will bring a myriad of weather impacts to the
Mainland, with blizzard conditions across the Bering Coast and
into the Chukchi Coast, snow and blowing snow to Interior
locations, high winds to the Alaska Range, and blustery winds to
the remainder of the Interior with the potential for snow and
mixed precipitation.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
There is a powerful negative tilt upper level trough over the West
Coast to the North Pacific, with split stream energy as the arctic
trough is merging with subtropical diabatic energy from the
Pacific. The basal shortwave trough is emerging off the NE Pacific
jet stream just south of Eastern Aleutians. This low is currently
analyzed around 985 mb, and is currently undergoing rapid
cyclogenesis. There is a remnant 991 mb low over the Yk Delta with
light snow and rain showers rotating around it. A continued south
gradient across the Alaska Range continues to support 45 mph wind
gusts through the passes. North winds are near gale force with
blowing snow over the Bering Coast.

Model Discussion...
The numerical weather models are in much better agreement with the
deep Pacific low as it shifts through the Interior, with all
models settling on a low track from King Salmon to near Mcgrath,
to near Tanana then to Arctic Village, by Sunday afternoon. All
models are in the ~975 mb range although some models are a little
stronger (Canadian and NAM). Timing is also much better agreed
upon now, with the prior fast NAM runs coming into better
alignment. The forecast will introduce near storm force winds over
the Bering Coast and stronger winds across the Alaska Highway
corridor when southeast winds rip through that area Sun.
Canadian Regional winds were favored for the coasts, with NAM nest
elsewhere, along with a blend of all models for snow and precip
chances.

Central and Eastern Interior...
South winds will remain blustery to 50 mph then ramp up into the
75+ mph range through the AK Range tonight and Sunday. Winds will
also rip across the Delta Junction to Tanacross region once the
low ejects and southeast winds kick in during the day Sunday. It
will be a blustery day everywhere, through, with gusts to 25 to 30
mph across most of the Interior, higher over the elevated terrain,
possibly near 45 mph. The heaviest snow axis will be over the
Central Interior to the Dalton Highway region, as well as across
S facing slopes of the AK Range. A brief period of rain will also
be possible for the S Interior and Alaska Range, as the warm front
crosses over Sunday morning and early afternoon. Generally
expecting 3 to 6 inches of snow from the White Mtns north and
west, with 1 to 2 inches further south, and 4 to 8 inches over the
Alaska Range. Little if any snow will fall over the Upper Tanana
Valley. Monday is cooler as colder air filters in behind an
initial leading front, but a stronger arctic front shifts east
Monday afternoon and Monday night with more snow showers and light
accumulating snow and some blowing snow. Highlights will be
hurricane force AK Range gap winds, with high wind warnings
remaining in effect. Snow and blowing snow with gusts to 40+ mph
over highway summits Sunday, and blustery winds everywhere else
including Fairbanks, with a possible mix of rain and snow turning
to all snow later Sunday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A mix of snow and rain showers are rotating around a weakening low
over the YK Delta this morning. However, north winds are also
increasing over the Bering Strait and coastal areas, with blowing
snow already at Wales, Brevig Mission, Point Hope, and Teller.
North winds will reach storm force gusts late today through Sunday
morning as a deep Pacific low tightens the gradient and colder air
moves in from the Chukchi Sea. It will get windy everywhere, with
north wind gusts 30 to 50 mph, locally higher over the Bering
Coast and Point Hope. Blizzard conditions are likely over the
Bering Coast with blowing and drifting snow across the Seward
Peninsula and down to the YK Delta Sunday into Sunday night. It
will remain blustery and much colder Monday, but winds will be
weakening as well. Highs Monday will struggle to reach above zero
with lows Monday night back into the negative teens to near -20 F.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Extensive stratus and patchy fog is plaguing the Arctic this
morning, which is due to the very weak pressure gradients and
higher low level moisture values due to several recent light snow
events. Pressure gradients will ramp up over the Chukchi Coast and
over the E Arctic today and tonight and will reach peak intensity
Sunday as a low from the Interior shifts north. Expect gusts to 55
mph for Point Hope and 50 near Kaktovik to Point Thompson with
ground blizzard conditions possible. Light snow will then move
over the Brooks Range and to the coast Sunday afternoon through
Monday, with colder air filtering in from the west Monday into
Tuesday with snow tapering off, as well.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
It looks fairly busy for the extended period as an arctic trough
over the Mainland weakens and the flow becomes dominated by Bering
Sea energy moving inland from the southwest. The first front
makes it into the West Coast Tue night and Wednesday and shifts
inland Wednesday night through Friday. The models are still not in
great agreement overall, but it looks like there is decent
potential for widespread snowfall over the Interior and West
Coast. As usual, the amount of northern stream energy shifting
moisture southward into the Gulf of AK is uncertain, but it does
look like the high end values from a couple days ago don't look
like they will occur now, as some energy will get caught up in the
northerly arctic flow Tue and shifted south. BY next weekend,
temps and weather look more seasonable with a return to cooler
temps as the polar front shifts back south again.
