.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Monday night)...

A high amplitude ridge is building northward across Mainland
Alaska this morning ahead of a deep low in the Bering Sea. In
between, an atmospheric river is transporting very warm and moist
air northward into the eastern Bering Sea and western Alaska.
Weather will be quiet across Southcentral, Kodiak Island, and the
Gulf today under the influence of the ridge. There are extensive
high clouds moving over the ridge as well as some localized low
clouds and fog. Still, expect at least some sunshine today.

The upper ridge axis will shift eastward through the day,
reaching the Al-Can border by this evening. This will gradually
open the way for the warm and moist air with the atmospheric river
to make its way into Southcentral from the southwest. There won't
initially be much in the way of a forcing mechanism to produce
precipitation. The one exception will be the Susitna Valley where
strengthening low level southerly upslope flow will lead to
development of rain beginning late this afternoon or evening,
especially from around Talkeetna northward.

Ultimately, a cold front will match eastward from the Bering Sea,
with widespread rain arriving in Kodiak and western portions of
Southcentral late tonight through Sunday morning, then spreading
eastward across the region Sunday afternoon through Sunday night.
The front will pick up speed late Sunday as an upper level short-
wave rounding the Bering low drives eastward across southern
Alaska. Thus, this will be another light rain event for most of
the region. The one exception will be the northern Susitna Valley,
where 1 to 2 " of rain are possible through Sunday night thanks to
the aforementioned strong southerly winds and upslope flow.

While there are some similarities to the pattern that brought
strong and gusty winds to Southcentral Thursday through Friday,
there are some key differences. The low track is notably farther
west and the mean flow in the atmosphere is more southerly in
the low levels and southwesterly aloft. As a result, pressure
gradients will not be as strong as the last system and the
strongest mountain level winds will be in different areas. For
instance, the southerly flow means winds along the Turnagain Arm
Mountains and hillside of Anchorage will be weaker. Southeasterly
gap winds will still develop through Turnagain Arm, the Knik River
Valley, and along the Copper River - but they will generally be
somewhat weaker. The southerly flow will favor stronger winds in
Cook Inlet and stronger and more widespread gusty winds in both
the Susitna Valley and Copper River Basin. Winds will peak during
the day Sunday with arrival of the cold front, then diminish
across Southcentral Sunday night. Cold air advection through the
Alaska Peninsula will lead to strong westerly winds in the western
Gulf and Kodiak island waters Sunday night.

The upper level short-wave will slowly exit eastward Monday
through Monday night, with some light rain showers lingering
longest in the Copper River Basin. After a strong of warm nights
due to clouds and wind, expect partial clearing and much cooler
nighttime lows Monday night/Tuesday morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA, THE BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS
(Days 1 through 3: Today through Monday night)...

KEY MESSAGES:

- A strong low over the western Bering Sea will approach Southwest
  on Sunday.

- The threat for coastal flooding with this system will peak along
  the Kuskokwim Delta Coast midday Sunday, with additional storm
  surge flooding possible along the Lower Kuskokwim River.

- The extratropical remnants of Typhoon Ampil will move into the
  western Bering Sea Monday night, but is not expected to affect
  Southwest due to the low tracking well to the west.

A potent low center is churning over the western Bering Sea this
morning, and is soon expected to reach peak intensity as it
bottoms out close to 970 mb later today. A large occluded frontal
zone now extends northeast from the low to the Yukon Delta, then
south towards the eastern Aleutians. The southern end of this
front is tapping into a deep tropical moisture feed, sending a
plume of precipitable water values up to 2 inches into the eastern
Bering. Near the low itself, a pocket of sustained storm force
winds is likely to soon develop just to the west of the center as
the low intensity reaches its peak later this morning into the
early afternoon. Elsewhere, a broad wind field wrapping around the
low and its front between small craft and gale force range
continues to impact much of the remainder of the outlook area,
with some of the strongest winds shooting north through gaps along
the southern Alaska Peninsula and eastern Aleutians out ahead of
the frontal axis approaching from the west.

Looking to the forecast details, the overall picture and
expectations for this system remain about the same, albeit with a
couple key changes reflected in this forecast package. While the
low is still expected to gradually weaken as its path curls
towards the east, the low is bottoming out stronger than model
projections were showing yesterday. This means the low and it's
wind field will remain notably more intense compared to earlier
projections as it heads east towards the Pribilofs tonight, then
towards the Kuskokwim Delta on Sunday. Wind gusts up to 60 mph
will be possible across the Pribilofs as the center passes just to
the north tonight along with seas briefly increasing to near 20
ft.

The more concerning impacts from the trend towards a stronger low
will quickly shift towards the Kuskokwim Delta on Sunday. Strong
onshore winds up to 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph will move
into the coast as the low approaches Sunday morning, then briefly
spread inland early Sunday afternoon as the low approaches Norton
Sound. Storm surge and associated coastal flood impacts along the
Kuskokwim Delta Coast will peak during high tide around midday
Sunday as this core of strong winds moves onshore. There may be
additional flooding along the Lower Kuskokwim River as far north
as Tuluksak due to storm surge backing up along the water channel.

From Sunday night into Monday, things should settle back down
considerably as the low moves even farther north and as winds,
waves and high water along the Southwest Coast subside. By late in
the day on Monday, the remnants of Typhoon Ampil will approach
the western Aleutians and Bering as a gale to storm force low. At
this time, this next low is expected to track much farther west
compared to this weekend's storm system, and significant impacts
to Southwest appear highly unlikely.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Tuesday through
Friday)...

A series of lows will bring significant weather to Alaska for the
period. Models are in agreement on the paths these lows will
take. The first low will continue to move through Alaska over the
weekend until it weakens and exits north of the Bering Sea on
Monday. Winds will weaken in the Central and Eastern Bering as
this low exits the region. Locally heavy rains will remain for the
Southcentral interior on Monday due to a lingering trough from
the low. After a break in activity, The second low, the remnant
low from Tropical Storm Ampil, will move across the Western
Aleutians on Monday night. This system will move into the Seward
Peninsula region by Thursday, but will fill as it travels.
Nevertheless, locally heavy rains will accompany this system over
the Central Aleutians and Bering Sea through Thursday. Near gale
force winds are possible with this system between the Western
Aleutians and St. Lawrence Island through Wednesday. The western
coast of Alaska will be affected by these winds from late Tuesday
through Thursday. Upper level ridging will be persist along the
Gulf of Alaska through Thursday morning before giving way to a
shortwave trough that will develop across South Central Alaska and
Prince William Sound on Friday. Conditions will improve in the
western Aleutian region as the system moves north with winds
slowly weakening.

PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist today. Rain and
lower ceilings will gradually approach from the west overnight
tonight through Sunday morning. Though ceilings will be in the
process of lowering early Sunday, expect VFR conditions to prevail
through the TAF period. Meanwhile, a Turnagain Arm jet will
develop in response to the approaching cold front tonight, then
strengthen through the day Sunday. Similar to the past storm, the
Turnagain jet will bend into the terminal, so it's not out of the
question that wind gusts reach 35 kt again sometime on Sunday.
