Issued at 323 PM MST Tue Nov 5 2024 The brief period of clear skies and calm weather we've been seeing this Election Day will soon end as a winter system approaches the Four Corners tonight, then impacts New Mexico through Friday. While more widespread snow is expected for New Mexico with this system compared to the one earlier in the week, the most significant impacts will be in and around the central mountain chain. Road closures and power outages will be a concern for areas near the eastern slopes of the central mountain chain where snow amounts may exceed 12 inches. Locally higher amounts over 24 inches are possible in the Sangre De Cristos. Expect temperatures well below normal for most of the state as the system exits the area on Saturday. A slightly warmer and drier period of weather will follow. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Wednesday night) Issued at 323 PM MST Tue Nov 5 2024 Forecast confidence continues to increase that a major winter storm will target portions of the region between Wednesday and Friday. The latest suite of deterministic models, ensembles, cluster analysis, and coordination with surrounding NWS offices and WPC has allowed for additional clarity on some details. Agreement is exceptionally good tonight through Thursday with regard to an unseasonably strong upper level low digging southward along the NM/AZ border. The latest satellite imagery shows strong diffluence aloft developing into the Four Corners region as a baroclinic zone strengthens ahead of an approaching 135-145 kt upper level speed max. A Pacific cold front will move into northwest NM tonight with snow showers breaking out along and behind the front. This activity will make it to the Cont Divide by sunrise with snow becoming more persistent on southwest- facing slopes of the northwest high terrain. Meanwhile, a backdoor cold front will enter northeast NM and begin to allow for snow showers to develop along the northern Sangre de Cristo Mts as well before sunrise. The light snow tonight is before the main event so the current Winter Storm Watches will continue with upgrades to warnings for several areas likely from subsequent forecast shifts. Snow showers will transition to more persistent snowfall along the central mt chain thru Wednesday afternoon as a 548dm H5 low drifts south along the AZ/NM border and the Pacific cold front converges with the backdoor cold front. Temps will be colder tomorrow in the wake of both fronts with snow levels dropping to near 5,500 ft. A rain/snow mix is expected during the day from near ABQ southward and for parts of the central highlands and northeast NM. The upper level storm system will then settle into far southwest NM Wednesday night with even stronger diffluence aloft, large-scale ascent, and deep moist easterly upslope flow along the central mt chain. Canyon winds in the RGV will strengthen Wednesday night with localized gusts in the 35 to 45 mph for the ABQ east side. Meanwhile, sow will become widespread Wednesday night and Thursday morning from the Continental Divide eastward across much of eastern NM above 4,500 ft. Snowfall rates may exceed 2"/hr along the central mt chain before sunrise Thursday. A snow-freeze zone may also develop in the RGV Wednesday night and Thursday morning with the deepening easterly flow across the high terrain. Blowing snow may occur where temps are cold enough with very low visibility, especially along the I-25 corridor from near Raton Pass to Las Vegas and Santa Fe. The H5 low moves very little thru Thursday while filling to near 555dm by 00Z Friday. Snow will likely remain widespread over the region with the heaviest snowfall rates in the central high terrain. Snow levels are tricky over eastern NM where very rich moisture begins advecting westward toward the H5 low Thursday. The Winter Storm Watch in Harding, eastern San Miguel, Guadalupe, and eastern Lincoln counties is primarily focused on their western borders where a very tight rain/snow gradient is possible. There are still details to clarify over the next 12-24 hours with thermal profiles, areas of mesoscale snow banding, higher snowfall rates, and blowing snow. The Winter Storm Severity Index still indicates major impacts from this system along the central mt chain and nearby highlands thru sunset Thursday. Folks in the higher terrain need to be prepared for very heavy snowfall amounts with some power outages during cold weather. Additional forecast and uncertainty details on this snowfall event for Thursday night and Friday can be found below in the long term discussion. && .LONG TERM... (Thursday through Monday) Issued at 323 PM MST Tue Nov 5 2024 Friday through Saturday... As the upper level low pressure system positions itself over southwestern New Mexico on Thursday evening, widespread snow will continue into the morning hours on Friday for much of the state. Upper level diffluence, aided by a 120 knot 300mb jet will help drive these large snow amounts along the Sangre De Cristo mountains. In addition, mid level flow will be perpendicular to the Sangre De Cristo Mts and will further aid in upslope orographic forcing. Snow levels will be in the 4000 to 5000 foot range by Friday morning so lower elevations such as the Rio Grande Valley and the eastern plains could see some accumulations. Some uncertainty still exists on the exact position of the low center and how fast it moves across the state through Friday, which could lead to some differences in snow fall amounts for certain areas. Regardless, there is high confidence that the lower to middle Sangre De Cristo Mountains will receive the greatest amounts of snowfall as precipitation chances will look to linger there later into Saturday morning. Expect several road closures for the NE quadrant of the state where heavy snow amounts will cause hazardous driving conditions in addition to possible power outages for residents of this area. A TROWAL over northern New Mexico on Friday evening into Saturday could edge precipitation amounts toward the higher end of guidance, but this is contingent on how far east the low pressure center will be. Most guidance has the center in the Oklahoma Panhandle Friday evening into Saturday. The Euro is the most bullish in terms of amounts and has precipitation lingering later than other guidance. Temperatures for the eastern plains of New Mexico will be hovering just around freezing so there is also some uncertainty for how far east frozen precipitation will be at this time. By mid-day Saturday the system will be on its merry way to the east, bringing about a period of drier weather and warmer temperatures. More zonal, westerly flow will start Sunday, but confidence of the weather pattern next week is low. Probabilistic cluster analysis currently shows two solutions: most GEFS members show a brief trough entering the region that could once again bring precipitation for northern NM, while most ENS members agree on a more persistent shortwave ridge pattern that will keep things drier and warmer. && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 427 PM MST Tue Nov 5 2024 Mostly calm weather with increasing cloud cover persists this evening ahead of steadily deteriorating conditions late tonight across the west, and northeastern NM Wednesday. A cold front will bring a chance for light snow to KFMN and KGUP tonight into early Wednesday morning past midnight, allowing for a period of MVFR conditions. MVFR conditions will accompany this frontal boundary into the Rio Grande Valley from KSAF to KABQ and KAEG Wednesday morning, but will be less consistent in coverage. A second cold front will swing southward thru northeastern NM Wednesday afternoon bringing snow and IFR conditions along the east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mts to along the I-25 corridor from KRTN to KLVS. Less precipitation is forecast further east toward KCAO to KTCC to KCVN, but a northerly to northeasterly wind shift will reach these locations closer to the TX border. Whether or not further deteriorating conditions reach KSAF Wednesday morning is an area of low forecast confidence. This may not occur until later Wednesday evening. && .FIRE WEATHER...
