2020 averages today, readings will trend cooler Friday and
Saturday as a storm system crosses with widespread rain and snow,
as well as some embedded thunderstorms. Snow amounts of a few to

Colorado border. Wind speeds will also strengthen Friday night
with hazardous wind gusts from 45 to 65 mph expected on Saturday
and Saturday evening. Speeds should weaken gradually late Saturday
night into Sunday morning. After warmer and drier weather Sunday
and Monday, precipitation will move in from the west again late
Tuesday through the middle of next week.

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Friday)

A weak upper level low will move across CO today with any associated
moisture or cloud cover bypassing NM and a shortwave ridge filling
in behind the low. The bigger upstream feature of interest will be
the low spinning offshore of British Columbia and WA state which
will eventually send a deep southern extension of a trough into NM
on Friday via a screaming 170kt Pacific jet. Today, high level
moisture will enter NM with the aforementioned shortwave ridge and
more diffluent flow aloft behind it will yield a gradual top-down
moistening that will spread some mid level clouds over western NM
before the day ends. A lee-side surface low will be found near the
OK-TX panhandles today, and moderately breezy conditions will
develop with the downsloping breezes boosting temperatures a few to
several degrees.

The Pacific Northwest low will not move much into tonight and
Friday, but within the highly amplified longwave pattern, a
negatively-tilted trough will pivot into the southwestern states,
spreading more large scale ascent with continued top-down moistening
into NM. Showers will begin over far western NM tonight, spreading
eastward into Friday with enough instability for a few
thunderstorms, mainly by the afternoon hours. A couple to a few
tenths of an inch of QPF through Friday and snow levels that would
initially be quite high will yield a few to several inches of snow
in the northern mountains, so a Winter Weather Advisory will be
issued. New lee-side surface cyclogenesis will also occur Friday
with the strong surface gradient and increased mid level flow
combining to produce more widespread breezy to windy conditions over
the forecast area Friday afternoon. The Pacific front will also
bring cooler temperatures to NM Friday with readings falling
slightly below normal in western and central zones.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday night through Wednesday)

Wrap around moisture will refocus the bulk of the precipitation
over northern areas Friday night through Saturday evening as the
upper level trough forms a closed upper level low pressure system
over the northeast NM/southeast CO border and the upper low exits
gradually northeastward into KS. Precip will then taper off late
Saturday night. Storm total snow amounts should reach a few to
several inches in the mountains, except locally over a foot on the
high peaks of the northern and southwest mountains. In the wake
of a Pacific cold front that crosses Saturday, the snow level will
lower to valley bottoms Saturday night, with a few inches of snow
accumulation at lower elevations near and north of Cuba, in the
upper Rio Grande Valley, and to a lesser extent around Capulin.

The deepening low pressure system on the NM/CO border will draw a
broad and strong northwest-to-southeast oriented polar jet streak
over northern Mexico and southwest New Mexico resulting in
hazardous wind speeds over much of the forecast area on Saturday
and Saturday evening. Wind speeds will begin to strengthen Friday
night when gusts from 40-50 mph will becoming fairly widespread.
Speeds should peak Saturday with widespread 45-55 mph wind gusts,
except for gusts up to 65 mph over the mountains and along the
high plain plains adjacent to the central and south central
mountains; where models are coming into better agreement on 700
mb wind speeds climaxing around 60 kt. The tail end of the speed
max aloft will linger over the area through early Sunday morning,
so wind speeds will weaken only gradually Saturday night.

High temperatures should bottom out on Saturday near to around 13
degrees below 1991-2020 averages. Readings will then rebound as a
ridge of high pressure crosses Sunday through Tuesday. Late
Tuesday through Wednesday, temperatures will trend cooler and
precipitation chances will increase as another storm system moves
in to the Desert Southwest.

Weather conditions will deteriorate from west to east over the
next 24 hrs. Mid and high level cigs over the region today will
lower across western NM with SHRA developing eastward across the
Cont Dvd by sunset. Southwest winds will also increase thru 21Z
with gusts of 15 to 25 kt across eastern and western NM terminals.
The coverage of SHRA and mt snow will slowly increase overnight
across the north and west with MVFR cigs spreading eastward thru
sunrise. Lcl IFR is also expected along and west of the Cont Dvd.
South to southwest winds will increase quickly aft 14Z with gusts
of 15 to 25 kt common by 18Z across eastern and western NM. Snow
levels will be falling overnight to near 6,500' by sunrise.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Critical fire weather is not anticipated through the next several
days, however winds will be notably stronger. Breezy conditions are
expected today, turning windy in some areas into Friday and then
peaking in speed Saturday when gusts of 40 to 65 mph will be
common. These gusts will be strong enough to cause damage in some
central mountain/highland locations Saturday. Winds will not be
quite as severe on Sunday, but still strong. Humidity values will
remain relatively high with the same storm system that is bringing
the high wind also smattering rain and light snow over NM, mainly
on Friday and Saturday. While drier conditions will return
Sunday, the stronger winds will not abate until Monday. This will
bring an abrupt drop in smoke ventilation rates Monday and also
into Tuesday, but higher dispersion rates with stronger winds and
also more rain and snow should return by the middle of next week.
