Cold temperatures are generally forecast for the next seven days
with many locations remaining a few to several degrees below
1991 to 2020 averages daily. Daily rounds of breezy to windy
conditions are also expected through the end of the week,
especially along and just east of the central mountain chain. A
storm system will produce strong winds across much of the forecast
area tonight through Thursday night, with the strongest winds
potentially reaching over 60 mph along and just east of the south
central mountains late tonight through Thursday night. That storm
system will probably also produce a few to several inches of snow
accumulation across western and north central areas on Thursday,
as well as over the central and south central mountains. Models
suggest another disturbance could bring more snow to the northern
mountains and northwest Saturday night through Monday morning, as
well as an Arctic airmass to northeast and east central New
Mexico. The potential exists for subfreezing temperatures across
northeast and east central areas Saturday through Monday or
Tuesday.

A shortwave trough is moving east southeast toward CO and will
transition into NE and KS later this afternoon. Mid level flow is
quite strong ahead of this feature with 700 mb speeds of 45 to 55 kt
along and downwind (southeast) of the central mountain chain of NM.
Periodic gusts that were observed at KAXX last evening have been
subdued since midnight, so will cancel the ongoing Wind Advisory,
but some gusts are shifting eastward across the plains as the strong
gradient associated with the lee-side trough pushes that way. The
winds aloft are modeled to relax by 10 to 20 kt in most areas by
this afternoon, but enough of a surface gradient will keep breezy to
windy (sub advisory level) conditions going today, mainly along and
east of the central mountain chain. More cloud cover is expected
over north central to northwestern zones (mid level associated with
the aforementioned shortwave and higher level with the next upstream
trough). Most of the better attendant moisture and accompanying
orographics with the shortwave will stay north of NM, but a few late
afternoon flurries cannot be ruled out over the far northern
mountain near the NM-CO border. This morning’s temperatures are not
nearly as cold as yesterday, and so the higher starting point should
allow daytime highs to outperform yesterday’s readings, despite
pressure heights actually lowering a few decameters today.

The next upstream trough will cross the Great Basin tonight, taking
aim for NM going into Thursday. Winds aloft will ramp back up
quickly tonight from the west southwest, and much of the higher
terrain areas, especially south of I-40 are expected to see 700 mb
winds of 45 to 60 kt before daybreak Thursday. This will impact
ridge tops and high peaks tonight into Thursday morning with high
level Advisory to perhaps High Wind Warning criteria (surface gusts
of 50kt or greater) over the high terrain along the southern fringe
of our forecast area. With this in mind, will issue a High Wind
Watch for portions of Lincoln and far southwest Chaves counties.
Winds will stay gusty in these areas and expand into the daytime
Thursday as the trough (potentially arriving as a couplet of two
smaller perturbations) overtakes NM and a surface low deepens over
eastern NM and west TX. Additional advisories would likely need to
be appended in surrounding lower elevation areas for the daytime
Thursday.

As for precipitation, this trough passage on Thursday into Thursday
night will be a cold one with 700 mb temperatures plummeting to at
least -14 C over a large majority of the forecast area late in the
day, and this will keep the p-type predominantly as snow with higher
snow-to-liquid ratios commonly rising to 15 to 1 or higher. Modeled
QPF is not overly impressive, but sufficient dynamics and the strong
baroclinic zone should still yield a widespread footprint of a
couple to several inches of snow over western and central NM. At
this point, would expect to join neighboring offices with Winter
Weather Advisories over far western zones between the AZ border and
the Continental Divide, as well as the northern mountains, but since
most of this will fall in late second to third period, will hold off
for another shift. The Tusas and Sangre de Cristos, and perhaps
Whitewater Baldy in the Gila would be candidates to receive
localized amounts of 8 to 12 inches with lesser amounts encompassing
the majority of these zones. Precipitation will wane quickly around
or shortly after midnight Thursday night as the trough treks east of
NM.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday through Tuesday)

Brisk northwest flow aloft will continue through the end of this
week with breezy to windy conditions continuing along the central
mountain chain and eastward across east central areas. The
strongest winds look to occur Friday, when west and northwest wind
gusts may again reach 45 to 55 mph along the central mountain
chain, as well as the east central highlands and northern Lincoln
County.

Models are in fair agreement on a cold upper level trough tracking
southeastward across the forecast area Saturday night through
Sunday, followed by another one that will clip northeast NM
Sunday night into Monday morning. Together these systems look to
produce a few to several inches of westerly upslope flow snow over
the northern mountains, with lighter amounts possible over lower
elevations of northwest and perhaps west central NM. In the
latest set of model runs winds don't look like that big of an
impact with these systems, but temperatures do. Models depict a
surface high pressure system sliding down the east slopes of the
Rocky Mountains weakening from about 1050 mb over the Canadian/US
border to around 1040 mb by the time it reaches the west central
Great Plains. This will funnel an Arctic air mass into eastern NM
Saturday night through Monday with a multi-day event of
subfreezing temperatures across northeast and east central areas.
After struggling to reach freezing Friday, Clayton probably will
not feel temperatures rise above freezing again until Wednesday.
Tucumcari and Clovis will probably experience subfreezing
temperatures from Saturday night through Tuesday morning. The
arrival of the Arctic air could come sooner than currently
forecast, since the NBM is notorious for bringing in strong
backdoor cold fronts too slowly. At this time the backdoor front
looks fairly dry, but we will monitor for signs of moisture that
could result in periods of freezing fog and freezing drizzle
across northeast and/or east central areas Saturday night through
Tuesday morning.

Increasing westerly winds aloft with the development and lowering
of VFR cigs will be the story through the TAF period, except at
KGUP and KFMN where conditions will likely deteriorate to IFR by
the end of the period with the onset of snow. Low level wind shear
will likely develop overnight at KLVS. Otherwise, winds will pick
up early Thursday and strengthen through the day. Areas of
mountain obscurations will develop early Thursday across western
NM and then gradually expand.

.FIRE WEATHER...

The weather pattern will remain dominated by brisk northwest flow
aloft that will keep generally colder than normal temperatures going
along with recurring breezy to windy conditions over the next few to
several days. Breezy to windy conditions will expand in coverage
today, reaching more of eastern NM where gusts of 35 to 45 mph will
be common, but afternoon humidity should remain elevated. Northwest
flow aloft will bring a quick-moving trough of low pressure toward
NM early Thursday morning through Thursday night, spreading light to
moderate snow across most western and central zones. While the
strongest wind speeds will be located south of the forecast area,
many areas within northern and central NM will still observe windy
conditions early Thursday morning through Thursday night with gusts
of 35 to 55 mph. Colder air will also spill into NM Thursday and
Friday. On Friday and into the weekend, the strong northwest winds
will begin to stay focused over the central mountain chain and
central highlands where gusts of 35 to 50 mph will be possible each
day. Temperatures will attempt to warm up several degrees Saturday,
but the warming trend will abruptly be stunted on Sunday as an
Arctic front plunges into eastern NM, keeping Monday’s temperatures
absolutely frigid. Warmer, but still well below normal, temperatures
are expected by Tuesday with gusty winds resuming over the central
highlands.
