Issued at 223 PM MST Fri Mar 1 2024 Dry and warm conditions combined with strengthening southwest and west winds will result in critical fire conditions and rapid fire spread, especially for eastern New Mexico, this weekend. Winds really strengthen to high wind criteria across the northern mountains Saturday night, spreading to the northeast highlands and plains late Sunday morning into the afternoon. Dangerous crosswinds are expected along the Interstate 25 corridor between Las Vegas and Raton on Sunday. Some snow showers are possible across the Tusas Mountains on Sunday. The high winds subside Sunday night into Monday, but remain brisk. The next system approaches the state late Wednesday into Thursday, allowing winds to gradually increase and possibly provide some beneficial moisture to portions of northern and central NM late next week. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Sunday) Issued at 223 PM MST Fri Mar 1 2024 After a relatively calm night with above normal temperatures and mostly clear skies, another bout of unsettled weather sets its sights on northern and central NM. A potent and cold 509dam upper low is currently swirling off the coast of the PacNW. Meanwhile, a stark dry intrusion is cruising along the US/MX border, helping to usher in markedly drier air to the Desert Southwest today. Quasi- zonal flow aloft will strengthen thanks to the tightening H5 pressure gradient overnight as the disturbance wobbles inland. A burly 150kt 300 mb jet max rounds out the southern periphery of the system, the fringes of which are poised to saddle up against the Four Corners midday tomorrow. This will allow H5 winds over the state to strengthen to 50 to 60 kts across western NM, spreading eastward through the day. By way of deep layer mixing, gusts of 35- 45kts will be possible, especially over the high terrain and portions of eastern NM. As such, did hoist a Wind Advisory for tomorrow afternoon through evening. High temperatures will be enhanced by the adiabatic compression offered by southwest sfc flow and did trend them to the higher side of guidance. Winds aloft continue increasing moving into tomorrow night. The edge of the aforementioned jet max will sink further into northern NM Sunday morning, bringing H5 speeds in excess of 80kts. Magnitudes at 700mb increase substantially across the central mts, particularly across the Sangre de Cristos, with impressive speeds of 70-75kts. The orientation of the flow combined with the enhanced ageostrophic vertical circulations suggest that mt wave activity may lead to sudden and erratic high wind gusts lee of the Sangre de Cristos late Saturday night into Sunday morning. The parent system splits and lifts near the US/CAN border by Sunday midday, stretching the jet max across the NM/CO. Meanwhile, persistent lee-side troughing will deepening to 998mb in the Great Plains, creating an impressive sfc pressure gradient. All these things in concert will lead to a day of high wind across portions of eastern NM. Deep layer mixing will allow strong wind gusts to translate to the surface, particularly across the Sangre de Cristos and their adjacent highlands/plains, where magnitudes of 45-60kts will be possible. The highest winds will favor areas north of I-40 and areas of low visibility will be possible due to blowing dust. Temperatures most locales on Sunday will remain above normal for early March. && .LONG TERM... (Sunday Night through Thursday) Issued at 223 PM MST Fri Mar 1 2024 High winds will quickly taper off across the northeast and east central plains after sunset Sunday, but remain elevated across the central mountain chain due to 700 mb winds of 40 to 50 kts on the backside of Sunday's shortwave embedded within a larger longwave trough over the northern and central Rockies. These stronger winds across the central mountain chain should taper off around sunrise Monday as 700 mb winds relax. Daytime mixing Monday will result in breezy west winds across the highlands and eastern plains as the state remain south of the aforementioned longwave trough across the intermountain west. Temperatures across central and eastern NM on Monday will be cooler by about 4 to 8 degrees than Sunday due to slightly lower 500 mb heights. Additionally, a weak backdoor front will enter far northeast NM during the day Monday. The ECMWF and GFS differ on the position and timing of this weak backdoor front moving through eastern NM Tuesday but it does not really make a noticeable difference in temperatures. Southwest breezes begin to pick up Wednesday afternoon as a positively tilted shortwave trough and possibly weak low off the CA coast dives southeast. This trough will move through the state Thursday cooling temperatures slightly below average and possibly bring some light precipitation to the northern and western high terrain along with some breezy west winds along and south of I-40. && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 923 PM MST Fri Mar 1 2024 VFR conditions prevail and are forecast to persist through the TAF period. Westerly flow aloft will increase overnight and become more southwesterly on Saturday, with surface wind gusts up to between 37-42kts at KGUP, KLVS and KTCC. && .FIRE WEATHER... An approaching upper level disturbance will bring markedly drier conditions amongst strong winds Saturday and Sunday, allowing for the potential for rapid fire spread in the eastern plains. Overnight recovery tonight into tomorrow morning will be a stark difference across northern and central New Mexico, with nearly all points seeing a 20 to 50 percent on the most extreme differences. This will set the stage for afternoon minimum humidity values to dip into the low double digits and single digits most areas. Winds aloft will begin strengthening and in the presence of deep layer mixing, southwesterly wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph are likely. This will create critical fire weather conditions across all of eastern New Mexico, with elevated to near-critical conditions being seen else where. Winds will continue strengthening into Saturday night with overnight recoveries being poor to fair. This could allow for localized critical fire weather conditions to persist into the overnight hours for some areas of eastern New Mexico. Areas across the central mountains and westward will see minimum relative humidity values climb beyond critical thresholds Sunday afternoon, while the eastern plains remain in the low double digits, with localized single digits possible. The highest winds will favor northeastern New Mexico, where gusts of 55 to 65 mph are expected. While some of these locales received recent precipitation, ERCs are trending above average to near max. As such, did upgrade Sunday's Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning. Winds slacken considerably on Monday and moisture improves, limiting critical fire weather conditions.
