Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 1106 AM MST Fri Feb 2 2024 ...New AVIATION... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 241 AM MST Fri Feb 2 2024 A storm system will continue to bring a few to several inches of snow to the mountains today through Saturday night, with a few inches as low as 6500 feet near the Colorado border. Lower elevations will receive mostly light rain. High temperatures will trend cooler with readings bottoming out near 1991 to 2020 averages to around 14 degrees below them on Saturday. The storm system will also bring strong winds. After breezy to windy conditions today, damaging wind gusts in the 45 to 65 mph range are forecast Saturday and Saturday night. Wind gusts up to 50 mph may then linger along and southeast of the central and south central mountains Sunday morning. After warmer, drier and less windy conditions to start the coming work week, another storm system will cross around mid week with widespread wetting precipitation along and west of the central mountain chain, the potential for heavy snow in the mountains, and breezy to windy conditions. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Saturday) Issued at 241 AM MST Fri Feb 2 2024 The deep upper low spinning offshore of the WA/OR coast looks in place for early February, but the more noteworthy feature is found farther south (just north of the 30N parallel) in the form of a stout jet (170 kt at 300 mb). This jet segment speeding over the Pacific and across the upper Gulf of CA, and soon into northern Mexico, is exhibiting 3 to 4 standard deviations above climatology, looking at the zonal wind component from the NAEFS. This will allow a broad vort max to swing inland and across NM today, bringing rain and snow along with a Pacific front. Rain and high elevation snow are expected to continue spreading over western and central NM through the late morning with showers and even a few thunderstorms persisting into the afternoon. Scattered showers and storms may even make into the eastern plains today, but these will be less widespread. Snow totals in high mountainous zones will be the primary impact of concern today with a few to several inches expected in most of these. Earlier forecast amounts in some of the northern mountain zones were already teetering on warning amounts, and it looks like there is sufficient accumulation forecast to justify a conversion of the Winter Storm Watch to Warning and even an upgrade for the Tusas mountains. The secondary concern will be winds today and tonight which have previously been covered with a Wind Advisory. However, winds become the front and center concern by Saturday morning, as the vort max evolves and lee-side cyclogenesis ensues over northeast NM and the OK/TX panhandles. A vigorous mid level jet will then be juxtaposed over the west central and central high country of NM Saturday, and strong to severe surface winds are expected to buffet these areas. A High Wind Watch will be hoisted this morning to account for these Saturday winds which will be stubborn to relax through Saturday night. By Saturday, the leading edge of strongest large scale ascent will be well east of NM, but wrap around dynamics and healthy orographics amid stiff westerlies will continue to bring steady snow to the northern mountains with a few more inches of accumulation above 9,000 feet. Temperatures will start to cool today, and by Saturday will be running 5 to 10 degrees below normal in many, but not all, zones. && .LONG TERM... (Saturday night through Thursday) Issued at 241 AM MST Fri Feb 2 2024 Wrap around snow will continue from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains eastward near the CO border Saturday night as the upper level low pressure system exits gradually southeastward over the TX/OK border. A few to several inches of additional snow accumulation are expected, bringing storm total accumulations in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to 8-14 inches with locally higher amounts over 20 inches. The east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Capulin area look to accumulate a few to 4 inches of snow, with upwards of 8 inches possible on Raton Pass. Meanwhile farther south, damaging winds are expected as a strong northwest-to-southeast speed maximum in the polar jet crosses NM and northern Mexico with 700 mb wind speeds from 45 to 65 kt. MOS guidance suggests surface wind speeds for this event may peak in strength Saturday evening with gusts reaching around 55-65 mph from Mount Taylor, the southern Jemez Mountains, and southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains southward, and northwest wind gusts from 45-55 mph across much of the southeast plains. The tail end of the jet streak aloft is forecast to linger over central and southeast parts of the forecast area through Sunday morning, so winds will weaken only gradually late Saturday night. Gusts from 40-50 mph will probably continue through much of Sunday morning along and southeast of the the central and south central mountains. A ridge of high pressure will cross Sunday through Monday night with a warming trend and dry weather. High temperatures should peak Tuesday a few to around 12 degrees above 1991-2020 averages. However, rain showers and very high terrain snow showers will also arrive along and west of the continental divide on Tuesday as our next storm system approaches from the west. Models depict a broad upper level trough crossing Tuesday night through Wednesday night or Thursday with westerly and southwesterly upslope flow precipitation. They also depict the system crossing with a tap of subtropical moisture, so there is a good chance of 0.10-0.30" of liquid precipitation for lower elevation locations west of the central mountain chain, and 0.30-1.00" of liquid equivalent precipitation in the mountains. Locations above 7500 feet will be favored for snow accumulation until Wednesday night, when 700 mb temperatures look to bottom out around -6 to -8 C. The potential exists for heavy snow in the mountains, but at this time it looks like most of the moisture will shift east of NM by Wednesday night, so lower elevation snow amounts may only reach a few inches. Southwest winds also look to strengthen with the storm system with breezy to windy conditions areawide Wednesday, then westerly winds may remain fairly strong along and east of the central mountain chain Thursday. && .AVIATION... Rain showers and high terrain snow will continue with MVFR cigs/vsbys around the northern and western mts today. Southwest to west winds will increase today with gusts of 20 to 30 kt common at terminals. A few gusts may reach 45 kt around KSRR and KROW today, especially beneath any showers. Lower cigs/vsbys will then focus over the northern mts tonight with snow continuing thru Saturday in the Sangre de Cristo Mts. The northern mountains will fare the best for snow accumulations, but western peaks could also receive a few inches. The increased moisture and wetting precipitation will be welcome and should mitigate the threat of critical fire weather, but there will still be big concerns about strengthening winds, somewhat today, but more-so on Saturday when gusts of 40 to 65 mph will be common. These gusts will be strong enough to cause damage in some central mountain/highland locations Saturday afternoon and into the overnight. Winds will not be quite as severe on Sunday, but still strong (gusts of 30-40 mph) over the central highlands, mountains and the far eastern plains with drier conditions returning.
