Quick update to adjust remaining wind highlights through the
overnight period. KROW continues to blow strong from the
northwest, even at times around 60 mph. Will extend the Wind
Advisory for the Chaves County Plains as well as the South Central
Highlands through 09Z to match up with other remaining Wind
Advisories. Roosevelt County and the Upper Tularosa Valley Wind
Advisories will be allowed to expire. Snow is also coming to an
end across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and the Winter Weather
Advisory has also been expired. Snow across east central NM will
likely slowly diminish through 08Z, but reports thus far suggest
up to 1.5 inches of snow has fallen in some areas. Will continue
to cover it with a Special Weather Statement. Last but not least,
the temperature at KGUP has already dropped to 0 degrees, which is
already below the forecast low. Have updated the low temp to drop
it a few more degrees through the morning. Updates out shortly.

.SYNOPSIS...

Snow will taper off over central and eastern New Mexico this
evening, however strong west to northwest winds will persist tonight
mainly over areas south of I-40, where gusts to around 50 to 60 mph
continue. Strong northwest winds ramp up again later Friday through
Saturday along the central mountain chain and adjacent highlands
with gusts to around 60 mph possible. Chances for snow return to
northwest and north central New Mexico Saturday night through
Sunday. Colder than normal temperatures are expected through the
middle of next week. An arctic air mass will invade northeast New
Mexico Saturday, spreading across the remainder of the east Sunday
into Monday. The northeast may see below freezing temperatures for a
stretch of three days, and where dangerous wind chill temperatures
are possible, especially Monday night.

.SHORT TERM...

A well defined shortwave trough is moving quickly from AZ into
western NM per the latest water vapor satellite imagery and is
forcing snow showers across northern and central NM this afternoon.
The 12Z upper air data showed this trough was impressively cold,
with -10C at 700mb over KFGZ and even colder 700mb temps upstream of
-17C! The 700mb temp at KABQ is forecast to reach down to -14C
overnight into Friday, so the cold air advection behind this trough
will be very noticable. In the meantime, the latest HRRR, HREF and
NAM diminish snow this evening by 03Z, with some light snow possibly
lingering across the highlands and northern mountains through 06Z.
The current end times for the Winter Weather Advisories looks on
track. Otherwise, the strongest winds are across southern NM and
will stay there overnight, although winds will be slow to diminish
this evening as strong winds persist on the backside of the
departing trough. The High Wind Warning and Wind Advisories
currently in effect are on track as well, with the potential for
strong to damaging winds to persist overnight across the South
Central Mountains and adjacent eastern Lincoln and southwest Chaves
Counties. Strong northwest flow aloft will persist Friday and Friday
night in the wake of the departing trough, with the potential for
strong to damaging winds along the peaks and east slopes of the
central mountains chain including western portions of the eastern
highlands where a High Wind Watch is in effect. May need to adjust
the start time to later in the day, but the strongest winds won't
hit until Friday night into Saturday morning and will be along the
east slopes of the Sangre De Cristos where 700mb winds are forecast
to reach up to 75kts by the NAM, which is the highest model
solution. Will let later shifts fine tune this forecast based on
mountain wave potential and expect at least some of the zones in the
watch to get upgraded. Otherwise, very cold and well below normal
temperatures will be the theme tonight and Friday. Wind chill values
will dip down into the single digits to negative teens across
northern and western NM overnight.

.LONG TERM...
(Saturday through Wednesday)

Strong to potentially damaging northwest winds continue Saturday
along the central mountain chain and adjacent highlands. Forecast
boundary layer winds taper down from around 40 to 50 kts to 25 to 40
kts late in the day. At the same time, the leading edge of a much
colder air mass starts to invade northeast NM. This initial push
doesn't appear to seep into the Rio Grande Valley Saturday night but
will have to keep an eye on this because of the shortwave
approaching from the Great Basin Saturday night and crossing over
northwest and north central NM on Sunday. Currently, forecast snow
amounts for this system range from about 5-10 inches over the high
terrain of the Tusas and Jemez mountains. Northwest flow persists
through Wednesday with potentially another trough dropping down from
CO and instigating yet another surge of arctic air into eastern NM
Monday/Monday night.

Due to the repeated surges of cold/arctic air, colder than normal
temperatures will be the rule into the middle of next week. In fact,
the high temperature at Clayton will be in the teens Saturday and
Sunday with single digits on Monday, totaling about a 3 day stretch
of below freezing temperatures. Wind chills in far northeast NM are
forecast to fall to around -15 to 20 deg F Saturday and Sunday
nights, but much more widespread and dangerously cold wind chills
spread over northeast NM Monday night, ranging from about -20 to
-30 deg F while over the rest of eastern NM they could range from 0
to -15 deg F. Considered issuing some Wind Chill highlights but it's
still a little far out in the future to do so. Temperatures may
start to moderate on Wednesday as westerly flow starts to develop
along with a lee trough.

Snow across east central NM will continue to slowly diminish over
the next two hours, but MVFR cigs/vsbys in BLSN will be possible
through that time at KTCC and surrounding areas. Elsewhere, snow has
come to an end with skies clearing. Gusty west to northwest winds
will persist at KROW as well as KSRR and KCQC into Friday morning,
though likely diminishing somewhat prior to sunrise. On Friday,
westerly winds will rapidly increase along and just east of the
Central Mountain Chain where gusts in excess of 50kts are likely.
This will create areas of BLSN where snow exists on the ground.
These winds will persist into Sat morning.

.FIRE WEATHER...

A shortwave trough moving east over NM will bring continued chances
for wetting precipitation through this evening, with stronger winds
persisting overnight. A very cold airmass will continue Friday into
Saturday behind the departing trough, with strong winds persisting
over and immediately to the lee of the central mountain chain, where
vent rates will remain mostly excellent. An arctic cold front will
slide into eastern NM on Saturday and get reinforced on Monday,
keeping frigidly cold temperatures in place east of the central
mountain chain. A shortwave trough moving east across the southern
Rockies on Sunday will bring good chances for wetting precipitation
back to northern NM in the form of accumulating snow. Rising
pressure heights going into the middle of next week will bring a
warming trend, but also the return of more widespread poor
ventilation. Critical fire weather conditions are not forecast
through at least the next seven days.

Light to moderate snow has developed along and behind a backdoor
cold front across east central New Mexico this evening. Snowfall
amounts are generally expected to be less than one half inch,
however, localized higher amounts are possible. Gusty northerly
winds will create areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility.
Visibility may be below one mile at times. Slick spots may develop
on roadways. Use caution and allow extra time to reach your
destination.
