Area forecast discussion, Nov 17, 1:50 PM PST, 12 hours 49 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
150 PM PST Fri Nov 17 2023

.SYNOPSIS...Showers will move in late tonight and continue
through Saturday afternoon before tapering off Saturday evening.
Gusty north winds will develop Sunday and Monday as a trough moves
through the region.
&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday.

A beautiful fall day across the region today but as we head into
tonight, we will start to see clouds filling back in and chances for
rain redeveloping. Most of the clouds won't really arrive until late
tonight into early Saturday, all in response to the low spinning off
the CA coast pushing inland. As the low progresses to the east, it
will start to weaken and become more of a long wave trough. How does
this change the impacts we will see from it? The answer is really
not much change. There really is no big change in the forecast other
than to shift the starts times a smidge later than previously
forecast. The other change is that there may be less widespread
coverage and a more scattered nature to the showers overnight into
early Saturday as model guidance continues to come in drier with
each subsequent run. An on again and off again type of event is
expected with the majority of the shower activity over the Sierras.
A band of tropical moisture looks to get swept up from the Baja area
and should move through Mohave county. In addition to this moisture,
there is some limited instability and lift which should allow for a
few rumbles of thunder to occur. Any thunder activity looks to be
fairly isolated through tonight and into early Saturday with the
best chances later Saturday morning into the early Saturday
afternoon. Not expecting any appreciable rainfall amounts with the
highest totals of around a tenth of an inch or two of liquid, mainly
across portions of Mohave county.

The axis of the trough passes off to the east on Saturday afternoon,
at which point the chances for showers will start to drop off. By
Saturday night, things are looking pretty dry with only some
isolated chances remaining.

The trough is mostly to the east of the region on Sunday but a
secondary wave will dig down the backside of the trough, dipping it
further south. This will tighten the pressure gradient and result in
gusty northerly winds on Sunday. Winds will continue to increase
through Sunday night into Monday as the pressure gradient continues
to tighten up. Most of the moisture will have cleared the region by
early Sunday though a few showers will be possible, mainly across
eastern Lincoln, northeastern Clark, and northern Mohave counties
with those chances dwindling by Sunday afternoon.

.LONG TERM...Monday through next Friday.

The trough axis finally clears the region on Monday though the
strong winds will continue through the day on Monday, especially in
the Colorado River Valley. Gusts in the 30 to 40 mph seem likely.
Ridging will then push in from the west for Tuesday and Wednesday,
keeping things dry. Another trough will drop down through the Great
Basin just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. At this point in
time, there is pretty limited moisture so showers don't seem all
that likely. Winds will increase with the tightening gradient so
might be a bit breezy during any potential holiday travel.
&&

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Winds will remain light under 10kts
and will favor typical diurnal directional trends. CIGS will be the
primary concern for the 00Z TAF period, with the potential for CIGS
aob 8 kft tonight into early Saturday morning. Current guidance
suggests a 10 to 15% chance of CIGS between 6-10k feet beginning
around 08/09 UTC Saturday.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Winds in the Las Vegas Valley and in the Colorado River
Valley will remain light under 10kts through tonight. At KBIH,
southeast winds 15-20kts with gusts around 25kts through the
afternoon then decreasing in the evening and east winds 10-15kts at
KDAG until around sunset then decreasing. Winds are expected to
increase at KDAG and the Las Vegas Valley TAF sites Saturday
afternoon. CIGS at all TAF sites will continue to be SCT-BKN around
5k feet this afternoon with increasing clouds and lowering cloud
decks below 10k feet later tonight into Saturday.
