.SYNOPSIS...A return to warmer and more seasonable temperatures
can be expected over the weekend with mostly clear skies. Winds
will begin to ramp up Sunday afternoon and evening ahead of the
next weather system set to bring widespread high winds to the
region Sunday night into Monday along with much colder
temperatures. Breezy conditions will persist into Tuesday with a
slow warming trend projected for the remainder of the week.

.SHORT TERM...through Monday.

Current satellite and water vapor imagery show a cut-off low moving
through southern California along the US-Mexico border, and a
shortwave trough moving through Idaho and Montana. The disturbance
to our south was responsible for the high clouds over the southern
portions of our forecast area earlier this morning, whereas the
northern system is responsible for the high cloud cover currently
moving through the southern Great Basin region. Outside of these few
high clouds, weather today will be quiet. Today's afternoon high
temperatures will be 5-10 degrees warmer than Friday's.

Saturday's calm weather will come to an end on Sunday as we see
winds begin to pick up across the region as an incoming system
approaches. While gusty winds can be inconvenient, the mixing
resulting from these winds as the system approaches will be a
blessing in disguise for those of you who are tired of below
average temperatures, because it will allow for temperatures warm
an additional 5 degrees from Saturday into Sunday. However, these
warm temperatures will vanish faster than they appeared as we
drop 10-20 degrees from Sunday into Monday.

Westerly/southwesterly winds will begin to pick up tomorrow
afternoon in the eastern Sierra slopes and in the southwesterly wind
belt extending across the Mojave Desert through southern Nevada into
northwestern Arizona. By early tomorrow evening widespread 45-55 mph
gusts are expected in the aforementioned regions, with the potential
for 55+ mph gusts in the western Mojave Desert zones and Eastern
Sierra. Additionally, there will be the potential for downslope
winds in the Eastern Sierra, Owens Valley, Spring Mountains, and
western portions of the Las Vegas Valley tomorrow evening. These
downslope winds will make for hazardous cross winds on north-south
oriented roads, especially Highway 395 between Independence and
Olancha in the Owens Valley. Previously the High Wind Watch for the
Eastern Sierra and Owens Valley was to go into effect at 7:00 AM PDT
on Monday; however, due to the threat of downslope winds, the start
time has been moved up to 8:00 pm PDT Sunday. By early Monday
morning, widespread 45-55 mph southwesterly winds will have spread
to the southern and eastern portions of the forecast area, with
gusty northwesterly winds picking up in Esmeralda and south-central
Nye counties as the trough axis swings through. These gusty winds
will continue through Monday evening for the entirety of the
forecast area.

Outside of gusty winds and a sharp drop in temperatures, this system
will also bring increased precipitation chances for the mountainous
regions of Inyo County, the southern Great Basin, and the
Northwest Plateau. Precipitation impacts will be mainly limited
to elevations above 5,000 feet in Lincoln County, with the
heaviest precipitation occurring in the eastern panhandle. Higher
end estimates have 4-8" of snow falling this area. Elsewhere, a
dusting to minor accumulations (<2") will be possible.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Friday.

By Tuesday, the system responsible for Monday's unsettled weather
will have cleared out of the Intermountain West and into the Plains,
leaving a broad area of lower heights and general troughiness in its
wake. These lower heights and lingering northwesterly breezes will
keep temperatures well below normal on Tuesday.

500 mb heights and surface temperatures will begin rising on
Wednesday as ridging attempts to build in over the coast of British
Columbia. This ridge will gradually become more pronounced and move
inland, allowing for temperatures to continue to warm up through the
latter half of the week and into the weekend. This warming trend is
consistent with the 8-14 Day Temperature Outlook produced by the
Climate Prediction Center, as well as the 8-10 Day 500 mb Height
Cluster Analysis.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...East to southeast wind with speeds
8 knots or less will continue into late afternoon before winds
increase 8-12 kts from the south to southwest. Those south-southwest
winds will continue through most of the evening and overnight hours.
Winds will increase Sunday afternoon from the south with gusts
approaching 30 knots. A period of even stronger winds will occur
Sunday night-Monday morning where there is about a 30% chance of
wind gusts reaching 50 knots. No significant clouds are expected.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Another deep, cold area of low pressure will move into
the Pacific Northwest Sunday. Typical elevated belt of stronger
south to southwest winds will develop across the Mojave Desert and
southern Great Basin Sunday afternoon. Also, strong winds over the
southern Sierra will create an area of enhanced turbulence.
Northwesterly surface wind favored at KBIH most of the period,
increasing Sunday afternoon with gusts approaching 30 kts. At KDAG,
there is about a 50% chance that wind gusts will exceed 40 knots
Sunday afternoon. Southerly winds increase up the lower Colorado
River Valley Sunday afternoon with KEED and KIFP having gusts
approaching 30 kts. No significant clouds are expected.
