.SYNOPSIS...A cold Pacific storm will bring more wind and snow
to the southern Sierra today. Widespread strong winds can be
expected along and north of Interstate 40 this afternoon through
tonight, along with locally heavy snow in the Spring Mountains and
Lincoln County. Another, colder system will dive over southern
Nevada and surrounding areas Wednesday, bringing windy and wintry
weather to much of the region. Dry conditions and a warming trend
will develop going into next weekend.

.UPDATE...Snow is flying in the Sierra once again as a weakening
moisture plume drops south across central and southern California.
Some minor spillover precipitation is noted in local webcams around
the Owens Valley this morning, but generally is amounting to no more
than flurries on the valley floor.

The weakening moisture plume will shift east this afternoon with
terrain driven showers increasing over the Spring Mountains and
higher terrain of Lincoln county.  The Spring Mountains should see a
few hours of moderate snow later this afternoon as southwesterly
upslope increases, promoting precipitation development over the
ridgeline. Elsewhere, gusty winds will be the main concern with
gusts of 40-50 mph across much of the region, particularly in areas
downwind of terrain features.

Overall, the forecast is in good shape with no updates necessary
this morning.

.SHORT TERM...through Tuesday night. Early morning satellite loop
showed the next storm spinning off the Oregon coast with a nice jet
max diving down its back side. Ahead of this storm, moist southwest
flow was bringing snow showers to the Sierra, and there will be
periods of heavy snow through the short term and beyond as wave
after wave rotates through the main longwave trough. Winter Storm
Warning still looks good. Winds in our CWA weren't responding yet,
but that will change later today as rapidly falling pressures and
tightening gradients drive increasing southwesterly winds for most
areas north of I-40. Wind Advisory looks good. Falling heights and
pressures plus the aforementioned jet streak coming around the base
of the trough will also help kick off snow this afternoon and
tonight across the northern CWA from Inyo County through Lincoln
County. The Winter Weather Advisory for Lincoln County looks good,
as the best forcing focuses there. One very notable trend over the
past 24 hours is rapidly increasing snow potential for the Spring
Mountains per many of the high resolution models. NBM snow amounts
for Kyle Canyon have come up about 60% versus 24 hours ago. With
that in mind, issued a Winter Storm Warning from noon today to
midnight tonight. After a short break in the action, the next cold
low diving south out of Alaska sharpens the trough and digs toward
our area (more on that in the long term). Snow will begin over our
eastern zones as early as Tuesday afternoon, and hoisted Winter
Storm Watches for the Clark County mountains, plus areas above 3000
feet in Lincoln and Mohave counties.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday.

The next weather system will be diving down into the southern Great
Basin/Mojave Desert on Wednesday. This system will be a fairly
unusual late season winter storm. A couple of things to note at this
point include how far south the cold air will make it this late in
the season, impacting both temperatures and snow levels. A couple of
climate notes, the last time Lake Havasu City had a low temperature
below 40 degrees in March was in 2002 and we are currently
forecasting 40 on Thursday morning. Second is Las Vegas (Harry Reid
Intl Airport) has only received measurable snow once in the month of
March (0.1 inches in 1976).

The EPS EFI values are highlighting this in terms of low elevation
snow on Wednesday (although precipitation will be light) and low
temperatures on Thursday morning across portions of the Mojave
Desert.

Precipitation with this system will favor the higher elevations of
southern Nevada and northwest Arizona with many lower elevations
receiving less than 0.10 of an inch of rain or liquid equivalent.
Snow levels on Wednesday morning will be between 2500-3500 feet and
will lower to 1500-2500 feet as the storm pulls away Wednesday
evening.

Also as the low digs into the area, a belt of strong southwest to
westerly winds will set up primarily across the southern half of the
forecast area, across San Bernardino, Clark and Mohave Counties
ahead of the approaching cold front.

The upper low shifts quickly to the east with shortwave ridging to
northwesterly flow in place place on Thursday and Friday keeping
conditions dry but temperatures well below the seasonal norms.
Southwesterly flow will develop ahead of the next approaching trough
on Sunday providing some additional moderation in temperatures.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Winds remain out of the south to
southwest through the remainder of the night, becoming gusty by mid-
late this morning. The strongest gusts are expected in the afternoon
and evening before decreasing overnight tonight. Other than wind,
FEW-SCT clouds 7-10k feet through mid afternoon then becoming SCT-
BKN 7-10k feet.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California... Winds generally remaining out of a southerly direction
through the remainder of the night but overall light in most areas.
Winds become gusty out of the south-southwest today and tonight with
peak gusts in the late evening. Low clouds below 6k feet are
possible at KBIH mid-late this morning through this evening and at
KDAG this afternoon. Light shower activity and lower CIGS are
possible at KBIH by late this afternoon into this evening.
