Key Messages:

- Below normal temperatures arrive today and stick around into early
next week.

- Confidence is increasing in accumulating snow Saturday, with
highest chances (80-90%) of at least 2" across central and north
central KS. Lower confidence in these amounts remains in parts of
east central KS (10-40%), where rain could mix with snow initially.

Discussion:

Upper trough has been deepening into a closed low over the western
CONUS, currently centered over NV/UT/ID as of 0930Z. This feature
serves as the driver of our weather heading into the weekend. In the
meantime, CAA behind a cold front will bring in much cooler
temperatures starting today as we sit on the southern edge of
expansive surface high pressure. Highs are only forecast to reach
the 30s area-wide.

The main focus of the forecast continues to be on the western trough
as it progresses east and evolves into an open and positively-tilted
shortwave by early Saturday. This will enhance lift and moisture
across the region with a band of precipitation expected to develop
in western KS Saturday morning and move eastward throughout the day,
eventually exiting late Saturday night to early Sunday as the trough
axis pushes east. Most of the precipitation is expected to fall
during the afternoon and evening time frame. However, uncertainty
remains in snow totals for two reasons:

1) Although an early look at CAM guidance suggests snow moving into
north central KS during the morning hours (with differences in how
far east it gets by midday), forecast soundings show quite a bit of
dry air below 850mb, so this could delay the onset of snowfall until
the rest of the column can saturate, which could be as late as early
to mid afternoon even as far west as Concordia. So despite
temperatures being cold enough to support snow for the duration of
the event towards north central KS, a later start time could cut
down on snow totals.

2) The location of the rain/snow line also remains in question due
to the track of the system. While 12Z guidance yesterday showed a
more northerly shift (and some of this is still incorporated into
the current forecast), the newest guidance is starting to hint at a
shift back toward the south. This could bring the heaviest axis of
precipitation slightly further southeast than the current forecast,
and could shift the rain/snow line southeast as well. Current
thinking is that this line would probably set up near the Kansas
Turnpike, as 00Z guidance shows warmer temperatures along and
southeast of this area. This would support a mix of rain and snow
initially with precip transitioning to snow in the late afternoon to
early evening. However, the HREF has a more southerly solution with
the rain/snow line along the southern edge of the CWA, which would
mean less rain/snow mix and more snow. Wherever this line sets up,
there does look to be a sharp cutoff, so a small shift north or
south could mean drastic changes in snow amounts. To add another
layer of complexity to this, the aforementioned low-level dry air in
point #1 could also mean that as the column saturates, temperatures
cool to the wet bulb with snow developing more quickly and less rain
mixing in.

All of that to say -- locations along and southeast of the Kansas
Turnpike have the lowest confidence in snow amounts. Locations to
the north and west have an 80-90% probability of seeing at least an
inch or two, with probabilities dropping off substantially to the
southeast (10-40%). Regarding the Winter Storm Watch, have opted not
to make any warning/advisory decisions yet due to this uncertainty.
We have expanded the area to the north and east as there are
ensemble plumes that reach up to 4-6" in this area, but that appears

Once snow moves out of the area by early Sunday, dry weather is
anticipated the rest of the forecast period. Below normal
temperatures look to continue into early next week (especially where
snow pack exists) with lows in the teens and 20s and highs in the
30s and 40s. Temps may moderate slightly toward mid-week as mid-
level ridging works its way into the area.

likely drop to MVFR at KMHK sometime mid-morning. Snow looks to hold

this afternoon and below 10 kts for the remainder of the period.
