Disturbances in the westerly flow aloft will keep periods of showers, with some light accumulating snow on the Rocky Mountain Front, through tonight. A Pacific weather system is then forecast to bring much colder temperatures with widespread accumulating and impactful snow for the mid to late period. && .UPDATE... Current forecast update has been sent out with minor adjustments. Temperatures were adjusted to a couple of degrees cooler for North Central Montana due to the thick cloud deck lingering throughout the day. Pops were increased slightly from the Great Falls to Lewistown line to reflect current radar trends. Winter highlights remain on track, and we will evaluate the winter storm watch for the afternoon forecast package. -Wilson && .AVIATION... 1210 PM MDT Mon Oct 23 2023 (23/18Z TAF Period) Widespread MVFR to LIFR conditions exist across the area this morning as low clouds and drizzle linger. Expect ceilings to gradually lift through the day today as moisture begins to work off to the east, but pockets of low ceilings will linger through tomorrow as another system approaches from the north. Widespread mountain obscuration is occurring and will continue to occur. Ludwig The KWYS TAF will not be issued until airport operations resume next spring. Refer to weather.gov/zlc for more detailed regional aviation weather and hazard information. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 300 AM MDT Mon Oct 23 2023/ Today and Tonight... A disturbance exiting North Central, Central, and Southwest Montana in a westerly flow aloft will take the lingering scattered rain and mountain snow showers with it this morning, leaving areas of fog in its wake. However, another disturbance will bring more showers to the area later this afternoon and continuing overnight. As snow levels fall to around 5000 feet on the Rocky Mountain Front, snow accumulations there could range from around 1 inch on the foothills to between 2 and 4 inches above Marias Pass. Westerly winds could also gust to 40 mph at times, potentially reducing visibility in blowing snow. Will therefore leave the Winter Weather Advisory in effect there. Otherwise, temperatures will remain near or slightly below seasonal averages. Tuesday through Saturday... Forecast models have maintained their agreement that this will be a very cold and unsettled period. With a stagnant high pressure ridge off the North American coast, a deep low pressure trough is forecast to eject from the Hudson Bay low onto the British Columbia coast today, and then move south along the BC coast to the Pacific Northwest coast on Tuesday. Deep moisture in the resulting westerly flow aloft over Montana will overrun a cool airmass moving south out of Canada will bring an increasing chance for light snow over much of North Central and Central Montana. However, the trough is forecast to move into the Pacific Northwest Tuesday night into Wednesday, dragging the cold air and light to moderate snow farther south into Southwest Montana. As the trough moves east across Montana Wednesday night into Thursday, the snow will start to decrease on the Rocky Mountain Front, but it will continue to accumulate over the remainder of the area, at least through Thursday morning. Probabilistic guidance has increased the area of at least a 50% probability of at least 6 inches of snow at lower elevations and at least 12 inches of snow in the mountains to include much of Central Montana from the Bears Paw Mountains south through the Big and Little Belt and Snowy Mountains into the Gallatin and Madison Mountains. Probabilistic guidance also indicates a moderate chance (40 to 60%) of moderate impacts on the plains from Great Falls to Lewistown, which could cause hazardous driving conditions and some disruptions to daily life. Have therefore expanded the Winter Storm Watch to include all of these areas. With the measurable snow potentially lingering on Thursday east of the Rocky Mountain Front, have also extended that portion of the Watch through the day on Thursday. The chance for additional snow decreases Friday into Saturday as the system exits the area. Temperatures will also become quite cold through this period, as probabilistic guidance puts the probability of highs remaining below 28 degrees at 90% or more over North Central and Central Montana by Wednesday, with at least a moderate chance (40 to 60%) of similar conditions in the Southwest Montana valleys by Thursday. The probability of sub 10 degree F temperatures also increases to at least 50% over the entire area by Friday night, with at least a 70% probability over much of North Central and Central Montana. Saturday through next Monday... Model cluster guidance varies a bit with just how fast the low pressure system exits the area completely, but the general trend through this weekend is to nudge the leading edge of an upper level ridge into the Pacific Northwest, which should help continue to decrease the chance for snow and allow temperatures to rebound slightly, potentially warming highs back above freezing at lower elevations by Monday. -Coulston && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
