Mild and tranquil weather is expected today and Sunday across North- Central and Southwestern Montana, though breezy conditions are expected along the Rocky Mountain Front. Winds will become more widespread Sunday night as our next weather system approaches the area. && .UPDATE... A west to northwesterly flow aloft will bring dry and mild conditions today. Winds will mostly be on the lighter side, but may gust up to 35 mph along the Rocky Mountain Front this afternoon. The inherited forecast remains in good shape, so no update will be posted this morning. -RCG && .AVIATION... 1120 AM MST Sat Feb 11 2023 (11/18Z TAF Period) VFR conditions will persist through the TAF period with some high level clouds moving across region. Winds near the KCTB aerodrome will be gusty in the 25 to 40 kt range, and along the east slopes of the Rocky Mountains expect even higher wind speeds and gusts, resulting in potential mountain wave turbulence. The main exception to this quiet weather will be some gusty winds, mainly along the Rocky Mountain Front. Highs today will be noticeably above average across the region, with most areas seeing highs in the mid 30s to upper 40s. Sunday will start out with more of the same across the area, with gusty winds along the Rocky Mountain Front and noticeably above average temperatures. Conditions will begin to deteriorate along the Rocky Mountain Front Sunday afternoon as leeside troughing begins to deepen as upper level flow increases. This will generate a combination of a strong pressure gradient and mountain waves, which will combine to make for very strong winds along the Rocky Mountain Front. While the winds will not be as strong by the time they reach the plains, areas across the Plains will see some gusty winds as well overnight Sunday night. Ludwig Monday through Tuesday...primary forecast concerns throughout the period will be the on-going threat for High Winds (Monday morning through Monday afternoon) and accumulating snow across all elevations, especially from Monday afternoon through early Tuesday morning (Continental Divide and Southwest/Central Montana) and from Tuesday morning through early Tuesday evening (North Central through Southwest Montana). Potent H500 shortwave over the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia Monday morning will dig south/southeast towards the Great Basin through Tuesday morning and eventually over the Four Corners through Tuesday night. Intense H500 height falls of ~130m to ~180m will begin to overspread Southwest through North Central Montana on Monday and through Tuesday morning, which combined with a plume of Pacific moisture advecting east ahead of an eastward advancing Pacific cold front will lead to increasing precipitation chances through early Tuesday morning across mainly the Continental Divide, Southwest, and portions of Central Montana (mainly along and south of the Montana Hwy 200 corridor). Lower elevation snowfall accumulations of 1-3" are generally expected over this timeframe, with 3-6" at pass level and 6-12" in the mountains of Glacier National Park and Gallatin and Madison Counties. In addition to increasing precipitation chances during the day on Monday, strong to potentially high west winds are expected to continue across the East Glacier Park Region, Southern Rocky Mountain Front, Northern and Southern High Plains adjacent to the Rocky Mountain Front, and Eastern Glacier/Western Toole/Central Pondera Counties. NBM4.1 probabilities continue to support a 60+% chance for wind gusts and/or speeds exceeding High Wind criteria across these areas through early Monday afternoon; therefore will maintain the High Wind Watch through Monday afternoon. By early Tuesday morning a secondary cold front will begin to advance south from Canada and across North Central through Southwest Montana, with a re-enforcing (third) cold front and push of strong 6hr pressure rises (~6 to 12mb) surging south by late Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. This re-enforcing cold front and strong pressure rises will bring increasing north winds, especially to the north-south orientated valleys of Central and Southwest Montana, in addition to increasing precipitation chances to North Central through Southwest Montana (especially to northerly upslope regions) over the timeframe. Snowfall accumulations of 1-4" appear possible along and behind this re-enforcing cold front from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening across lower elevations of North Central through Southwest Montana, mainly south of a Browning to Lewistown line and north of a West Yellowstone to Butte line; with 4-8" of snow falling in the mountains and northerly upslope areas. Future winter weather highlights will likely be needed to cover both snow events, especially across the mountain zones and Montana Hwy 200 corridor. Wednesday through next Saturday...H500 ridge axis extending south to north over the Western US and Canadian coasts Wednesday morning will shift eastward to over the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies by Thursday morning before being flattened out through Friday morning as a shortwave dives southeast from over Alaska to the Canadian Prairies. This upper level pattern will place the Northern Rockies beneath predominately dry, northwest to north flow aloft through the entire period. At the surface, high pressure over Eastern Montana/Western Dakotas/Saskatchewan Wednesday morning will slide eastward towards the Northern High Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley through Thursday evening, with lee-side surface troughing sharpening across Central and North Central Montana over the timeframe. Surface winds across Southwest through North Central Montana will begin to shift to the south to southwest through the day on Wednesday, becoming strong and gusty during the day and overnight hours on Thursday, especially in wind prone locations. These strong and gusty winds on Thursday will help to scour out most of the "colder" air across the CWA (with the exception of the Milk River Valley), with temperatures rebounding to near climatological normals for the day on Thursday.
