.SYNOPSIS...

An approaching weather system will bring mainly mountain snow to
Central and Southwest Montana this afternoon through Monday morning.
Attention then turns to increasing westerly winds across the North-
central Montana plains Monday night into Tuesday. Another round of
mainly mountain precipitation and gusty winds on the plains is
expected Wednesday.

.Update...

Previous forecast is handling the current weather situation well,
with only minor adjustments made to PoPs and diurnal trends,
mainly to incorporate latest Hi-Res guidance and observation. This
resulted in a 10-20% PoP increase over portions of North Central
through Southwest Montana, mainly where there are Winter Weather
Advisories in place. While radar was indicating light
precipitation lifting north northeast over the plains of North
Central and Central Montana this morning, most if not all of this
falling precipitation was not reaching the surface (i.e. virga).
None-the-less, did insert some low PoPs 10-15% over portions of
the plains in the event some flurries/sprinkles or light
snow/light rain is able to survive the dry mid-level air and
reach the surface. Otherwise, the remainder of the forecast is
still on track, with accumulating snow expected across the
mountains of Southwest through Central Montana and along the
Continental Divide through Monday morning. The "heaviest" snowfall
accumulations, with amounts approaching 5-10", is generally
expected above 7500ft in the Little Belt, Highwood, Big Belt,
Bridger, and Castle Mountains, and Gallatin and Madison County
Mountains and Centennial Mountains. The remaining elevations
below 7500ft in these mountainous areas can generally expect to
see 2-5" of snow through Monday morning. - Moldan

KBZN/KEKS: An approaching weather system will bring low clouds and
occasional snow and rain to the area. Expect generally MVFR
conditions through the day today, with widespread mountain
obscurations. Winds will also be on the gusty side at times at KEKS,
with wind gusts to 25-30 kts.

KHLN/KGTF/KLWT/KCTB/KHVR: While mid and upper level clouds will
continue to persist across the region over the next 24 hours, expect
mainly VFR conditions, with occasionaly MVFR conditions, to prevail.
Widespread mountain obscuration is not expected, though periods of
it are possible around KGTF, KLWT, and KHLN. Winds will be on the
increase over the next 24 hours, which may result in some mountain
wave turbulence at times. Ludwig

/ISSUED 408 AM MST Sun Feb 5 2023/

Today into Monday morning... To start the period, a compact upper
ridge is overhead, with a more broad upper trough entering the
western CONUS from the eastern Pacific. Most energy with this
approaching trough will dip south into the Great Basin/Desert
Southwest today, but enough moisture will make its way across
Southwest and Central Montana for primarily mountain snow this
afternoon and overnight into Monday. Any precipitation that makes it
to valley floors across Southwest Montana will battle with near
surface air that is above freezing. Hence, a mix of light rain and
snow is forecast where light precipitation does fall at lower
elevations. Minor impacts to roadways from snow are expected to
remain largely in terrain across Southwest Montana including US-191
south of Bozeman and Bozeman, Targhee and Raynolds passes, where 2-5
inches of snow over 24 hours is forecast. Forecast totals over Kings
Hill Pass have increased slightly, so I have opted to hoist a Winter
Weather Advisory there as well. There are some concerns for a brief
period (A few hours) of blowing snow in the southern Madison River
Valley late this afternoon, but southerly winds there are forecast
to decrease with the onset of precipitation. I have extended the
timing of existing Winter Weather Advisories to last a bit longer
into Monday morning, as guidance has trended towards precipitation
lasting a bit longer there. Elsewhere across the plains of North-
central Montana, dry conditions are expected today, with breezy
westerly winds expected to redevelop late evening.

Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening... Brief upper ridging is
expected to develop across the region Monday afternoon bringing
largely northwesterly flow aloft. Another inbound trough from the
eastern Pacific will work to turn mid level flow more westerly
Monday night/Tuesday morning. Flow in the mid levels is expected to
increase as the upper trough approaches. The result across North-
central Montana is another period of breezy to strong winds Monday
night into Tuesday. Probabilistic guidance is optimistic that high
wind criteria will be met along the high plains adjacent to the
Rocky Mountain Front, giving an ~ 70% chance of exceeding 55mph
gusts in Cut Bank and an ~ 50-70% chance of gusts exceeding 75 mph
along the immediate east slopes of the Rocky Mountain Front. Initial
northwesterly flow in the mid levels Monday night is a bit off-
putting for favorable high wind conditions, however. Model guidance
does eventually turn flow westerly late morning Tuesday, giving
better confidence for high winds being realized at that time. Given
uncertainty at this time related to when exactly high winds will
occur, I have elected to continue the High Wind Watch as is.
Consideration was given to expanding the watch into lower elevations
in Judith Basin County, but probabilities there for high winds are
only around 40% at this time, so I have opted to hold off for now.

Tuesday night through the end of the week... The aforementioned
trough responsible for increased winds across the region Monday and
Tuesday will continue its approach Tuesday night, crossing over the
region Wednesday. Much like the system expected across the region
today, most precipitation is expected to be reserved for terrain,
and looks to be relatively light in nature at this time for most
areas. The probability for snow in excess of 6 inches is around 50-
60% across Marias Pass from Tuesday evening through Wednesday. The
probability for snow in excess of 4 inches across the highest peaks
of Southwest Montana is running at or just below 50% over the same
time period.

The second impact from this system is expected to be another round
of stronger westerly winds across the plains Wednesday morning. A
brief period of lower wind speeds is expected across the plains
Tuesday evening before a surface trough begins to redevelop in lee
of terrain late Tuesday night. Probabilities for gusts in excess of
55 mph that are greater than 50% reside along the immediate eastern
slopes of the Rocky Mountain Front and into the Cut Bank area. This
time period is also included in the current High Wind Watch in
effect along the Rocky Mountain Front. Cooler temperatures are
expected to filter into the region Wednesday evening and overnight,
especially across Southwest Montana.

About a quarter of cluster guidance/ensemble members hold onto the
upper trough near the region Thursday, giving a small chance for
lingering mountain flurries early on Thursday. Cluster guidance and
ensembles are almost unanimous in rebuilding an upper ridge across
the region Friday, resulting in dry conditions and above average
temperatures. Confidence in the forecast decreases significantly as
we enter next weekend. Confidence in another upper trough developing
across the eastern Pacific is about 80%, but ensemble members are
inconsistent with timing and location. Hence, a wide array of
solutions are in play next weekend, with the forecast resembling a
blend of all possible outcomes until confidence in the situation
