Warm, dry, and breezy conditions are expected through Monday as an upper level ridge remains overhead. Cooler and windy weather is expected across the area on Tuesday as a cold front pushes through the region, with a little bit of light rain and mountain snow. Warm and dry weather returns to the area on Wednesday. && .DISCUSSION... No adjustments needed to the current forecast. High pressure aloft will allow winds to remain mostly light overnight, while scattered mid- and high-level cloudiness will allow temperatures to generally stay above seasonal averages. Patchy fog may form in some valleys of Southwest Montana and north of the Milk River on the Hi-Line, but it is unlikely that any this fog will become dense. -Coulston && .AVIATION... 1153 PM MDT Sun OCT 15 2023 (16/06Z TAF Period) VFR conditions will prevail across most of Southwest, Central and North-central Montana. Expect light winds and scattered high clouds. For the KEKS terminal there will be some gusts up to 25 kts beginning Monday mid-morning and continuing through the end of the TAF period. For the KWYS terminal there is a chance that there could be some fog beginning Monday at midnight and continuing through mid-morning. However, the probabilistic guidance did not provide enough support for this fog to justify adding a TEMPO group to the KWYS TAF. -IG Refer to weather.gov/zlc for more detailed regional aviation weather and hazard information. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 655 PM MDT Sun Oct 15 2023/ Warm and dry weather is expected to continue today and tomorrow as an upper level ridge remains firmly entrenched over the area. Aside from some high clouds today and Monday and a southwesterly breeze, there really will not be much to talk about for the next two days aside from the temperatures, which will rise into upper 60s/low 70s today and the low to mid 70s on Monday. Winds will increase across the Rocky Mountain Front late Monday evening and early Tuesday morning as our upper level ridge begins to collapse, thanks to an approaching upper level trough coming in from the west, along with an associated jet streak aloft. As this trough and jet streak push towards our area, the upper level dynamics will result in the formation of a leeside trough in Southern Alberta, which will contrast sharply with high pressure over Western Montana. A High Wind Watch was issued for these areas last night, and it remains in effect at this time. Further east across the Plains and Central Mountains, winds will begin to ramp up quickly after sunrise as this system moves eastward, with with wind gusts in excess of 50-55 mph looking likely, and some areas seeing probabilities of high winds (58 mph or higher) near or exceeding 50%. Given the proximity to 60 mph winds aloft to the mixing layer (where they may begin to mix to the surface), I have elected to issue a new High Wind Watch for areas across the Plains and Central Mountains. Winds will not be the only thing this system brings, as moisture and cooler air will begin to work in the area along and behind a cold front that will push through Tuesday afternoon and evening. Expect temperatures to only reach the 60s for highs on Tuesday as this system moves through, with some light rain and mountain snow expected as early as Tuesday Morning across the Southwest, and during the afternoon and through the evening across the Plains and Central Montana Mountains. Behind this system, upper level ridging will quickly return to the area, with highs quickly rebounding on Wednesday into the upper 60s to near 70. Temperatures will remain well above normal through the end of the week with upper level ridging in place, along with mostly dry and quiet conditions overall.
