.SYNOPSIS...

Begin this week with above normal high temperatures ranging in the
mid 60s to mid 70s. Periods of strong gusty winds are forecast, as
well. Mid week, below normal high temperatures are forecast with
returning snowfall for some areas.

.UPDATE...

For this mornings update, increased afternoon high temperatures by
3 to 5 degrees as overnight lows were in the low 50s and low 40s
across the CWA. Also ended the High Wind Warning for this morning
as wind gusts are below warning criteria. The rest of the forecast
remains on track for today with some breezy conditions and above
normal temperatures. We continue to monitor the potential for
minor to moderate flooding across the CWA, especially for the
Milk River Valley. Webb

.AVIATION...
1125 AM MDT Mon Apr 10 2023 (10/18Z TAF Period)

Note: NWS Great Falls manages the TAFs for the following airfields:
KCTB, KHVR, KGTF, KLWT, KHLN, KBZN and KEKS.

VFR conditions prevail at all airfields for the duration of the
10/18Z TAF period. A large upper level low pressure system to the
west places the region under a southwest flow aloft, bringing gusty
winds and widespread upper level clouds during the period. Mountain
obscuration is forecast across The Continental Divide.

The greatest impact to aviation ops during the period is gusty south
to southwest winds. A High Wind Warning and High Wind Watches have
been issued, please see WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES section below
for spatial and temporal details valid as of the issuance of this

.HYDROLOGY...

Continued analysis of Modeled Snowpack Temperatures from the
National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center
(nohrsc.noaa.gov) shows a substantial warming of the existing
snowpack over the Bears Paw Mountains and extending all the way to
the Canadian border. Given the warm daytime and overnight
temperatures expected for the next 36 hours, we expect most of
this snowpack to melt out and cause at least minor flooding issues
on the tributaries of the Milk River, as well as lowland flooding
where water collects and drainage is poor. A Flood Watch
continues through Wednesday for Liberty, Hill, Blaine and Chouteau
counties where additional impacts to roads and rural areas are
likely to develop. A Flood Advisory continues today for areas near
the Milk River Valley and Bears Paw where minor flooding is
already occurring and affecting several roads. A Flood Watch is,
also, in effect for the Gallatin Valley, where a substantial
snow-pack still exists and warmer temperatures bring accelerated
melting and potential for minor flooding, especially to low-lying

Note: The National Weather Service Great Falls Office forecast
area includes north central, central and southwest Montana.

Upper level ridging dominates, today. A tight upper level gradient
along the trailing edge of the ridge has set up along The
Continental Divide favoring areas of high winds. A High Wind
Warning remains in place for the East Glacier Park region and the
Northern High Plains until 9 AM MDT this morning. A chinook arch
is nicely visible on satellite imagery. The strong southwesterly
flow favors well above normal temperatures, with highs reaching
the mid 60s to mid 70s during the early part of the week. This
causes concern for snowpack melt and the ensuing potential for
flooding. Some areas are already experiencing some low land
flooding. For this reason, an Aerial Flood Advisory is in place
for portions of Hill, Blaine and Chouteau Counties. Additionally,
Flood Watches have been issued and continued for portions of north
central Montana, as well as, portions of Gallatin County. A
Hydrologic Outlook has been issued, as well, to highlight general
flooding concerns during this period of snowpack melt.

As the upper level ridge exits the region eastward, and a North
Pacific Trof approaches from the west, a strong upper level
southwesterly gradient sets up. Strong winds mix to the surface
courtesy of warm surface temperatures, and the potential for
another round of high winds is forecast for Tuesday. As of this
time, High Wind Watches are in place for much of the region.

As the afore mentioned upper level trof continues into the area,
unsettled weather dominates and temperatures cool to below normal
levels. Snowfall is forecast to return to The Treasure State.

The next upper level ridge builds into the region for the coming
weekend, and warmer and drier conditions return.
