Snow and snow showers will persist through the evening and early morning hours on Wednesday across the Northern Rockies, with the most persistent light snow expected across northeastern portions North Central Montana. South and west winds will begin to increase across Southwest through North Central Montana on Wednesday, becoming particularly strong along the Rocky Mountain Front Wednesday night and through the day on Thursday. && .UPDATE... /843 PM MST Tue Feb 28 2023/ The NWS Great Falls forecast area includes north central, central and southwest Montana. The Winter Weather Advisory for Hill and Blaine Counties and The Bears Paw Mountains is cancelled. Some areas of lingering light snowfall are expected. Updates to the forecast include, adjusting wind speed values down, a bit, for north central and central Montana, and up, a bit, for the southwest portion of the state. Additionally, with moisture ending earlier than originally forecast, have reduced Probability of Precipitation (POP) values across some areas. Areas of fog are forecast; however, with broken to overcast skies forecast to continue throughout the night, dense fog is not forecast. Area of greatest concern will be the Milk River Valley. Some lingering light snow is expected, in that area. - Fogleman && .AVIATION... 520 PM MST Tue Feb 28 2023 (01/00Z TAF Period) The NWS Great Falls Airfields include: KCTB, KHVR, KGTF, KLWT, KHLN, KBZN and KEKS. KCTB begins this TAF period in IFR conditions due to low ceiling. From 01/03Z conditions at KCTB improve into the MVFR range. Conditions at KBZN are forecast to remain VFR throughout this period. MVFR conditions are forecast to occur during this TAF period at all other airfields due to low ceiling. PROB30s are included in the KEKS TAF adding the probability of IFR conditions in light snow and mist and with low ceiling. Conditions at all airfields improve with time. Mountain obscuration is forecast. KLWT to KHLN, along with our southwest Montana airfields, include gusty winds up to 26KT at the onset of this TAF period. Winds gradually decrease, and by 01/06Z, generally light winds are forecast at all airfields. - Fogleman Refer to weather.gov/zlc for more detailed regional aviation weather and hazard information. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 520 PM MST Tue Feb 28 2023/ Rest of today through tonight...primary concern will be light accumulating snow across northeastern portions of North Central Montana, in addition to convective snow showers capable of producing gusty and erratic winds and even an occasional lightning strike/flash across Central Montana. Open H500 shortwave sliding east from over the Northern and Central Rockies to the Northern High Plains through this evening will continue to promote scattered snow showers across portions of Southwest through North Central Montana. These snow showers have been the most "intense" between the Montana Hwy 200 and US Hwy 12 corridor across Central Montana where earlier clearing has led to steep lapse rates amongst semi-unstable LI's. Expect coverage of the snow showers to decrease through the early evening hours tonight with the loss of solar insolation, with the primary area of snow residing across northeast portions of North Central Montana where low level frontogenesis will promote a more stratiform type of precipitation. This light stratiform snow is expected to lead to 1-3" of snow through early Wednesday morning across Hill, North Blaine, and the Bears Paw Mountains; thus the Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect until 12z Wednesday here. Wednesday through Thursday...primary concern throughout the period will be increasing south to west winds, most notably along the Rocky Mountain Front and the plains east to the I-15 corridor across Central and North Central Montana. Strengthening pressure gradient due to a sharpening lee-side surface trough will lead to increasing winds during the afternoon and evening hours on Wednesday across the CWA, with the pressure gradient expected to peak along the Rocky Mountain Front (17-22mb/km), Montana Hwy 200 corridor (7-12mb/km), and south of the I-90 corridor in Southwest Montana (5-10mb/km) between 09-18z Thursday. This peak in the pressure gradient is when wind speeds/gusts are also expected to peak. While the pressure gradient alone will lead to widespread sustained wind speeds of 15- 30kts across the aforementioned regions, further enhancement to surface winds are expected along the Rocky Mountain Front due to increasing cross barrier flow to 40-60kts and the mountain wave activity. NBM probabilistic data suggest an 85% chance that wind gusts will exceed 48kts and a 50% chance of exceeding 56kts at Cut Bank. Further west there exists a 100% chance of exceeding 48kts, 90% chance of exceeding 56kts, and 55% chance of exceeding 64kts at Browning. Additionally, both Browning and Cut Bank have between a 90- 100% chance of seeing sustained wind speeds of 34kts or higher. This high probabilistic support combined with the aforementioned support for mountain wave activity has increased confidence to the point where a High Wind Watch has been issued for the Eastern Glacier Park Region, Southern Rocky Mountain Front, and Northern and Southern High Plains from 21z Wednesday through 01z Friday, and Eastern Glacier, Western Toole, and Central Pondera Counties from 07z Thursday through 01z Friday. In addition to the strong winds across the High Wind Watch area, blowing and drifting snow will also be of concern, which could lead to additional travel impacts. - Moldan Friday through next Tuesday...Below normal temperatures continue for Friday and Saturday, but it will be a bit warmer than earlier in the week. The weather pattern will start to change to a cold and snowy weather pattern once again from Sunday through Tuesday, as a deep upper level trof tries to develop over the western U.S. Much below temperatures are expected by early next week, along with periods of snow.
