The more significant adjustment was to lower low temperatures on the Rocky Mountain Front. Temperatures there had already fallen into the 20 to 30 below zero F range, so mostly lowered low temperatures there about up to 10 degrees over the original forecast into the 30 to 35 below zero range. Mid level cloudiness is already starting to move into that area with an approaching disturbance, so that should help prevent most areas from falling to around or below 40 below zero. Speaking of the disturbance, the other adjustment was to make the chance for light snow or flurries cover most of Southwest and North Central Montana. Am not expecting much as far as additional accumulation (mainly a trace at lower elevations and up to one inch in the mountains), but there is a good chance that at least flurries will occur across much of the area. The Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories continue to handle the situation well, so no adjustments there. -Coulston && .SYNOPSIS... Dangerously cold conditions will persist into Friday and Saturday before ending, generally from southwest to northeast across the region. Westerly winds increase Friday into Saturday with blowing and drifting snow expected for some areas until temperatures rise above freezing. The most significant impacts will be along the Rocky Mountain Front and the adjacent plains. More passing disturbances bring more gusty winds and mostly mountain snow Sunday into early next week as temperatures trend closer to average. && .AVIATION... 1055 PM MST Thu Feb 23 2023 (24/06Z TAF Period) An area of light snow will move from south to north through the CWA overnight. We reissued Wind Chill Warnings for all of north-central Montana and parts of southwest Montana given colder forecast low temperatures more within the NBM probabilistic range, which is considerably colder for some areas than the NBM deterministic values. We also upgraded the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning for significant blowing and drifting snow concerns for the Rocky Mountain Front beginning late Friday morning and lasting into Saturday. We did contemplate issuing a Blizzard Warning for ground blizzard conditions but we are not quite confident in how severe visibility will be. However, we do expect significant infrastructure issues with severe drifting of snow across roads. West winds will begin along the Rocky Mountain Front as early as the late morning hours Friday as a disturbance passes and a cross- barrier gradient flow increases. The isallobaric pressure rises may cause a sudden deterioration of intense blowing and drifting snow along the immediate Rocky Mountain Front, with winds gradually expanding out across the adjacent plains through the afternoon and evening hours. NBM probabilistic guidance indicates a greater than 80 percent chance of wind gusts exceeding 55 mph for these areas by Friday night into Saturday. The difficult aspect of issuing hazards in these types of events is trying to determine when snow stops becoming transportable. In this case, temperatures should rise to near or above freezing by late Saturday afternoon across much of this area, which should allow for an improvement in blowing and drifting snow. However, gusty winds will continue into Saturday night. Winter Weather Advisories for blowing and drifting snow are likely to be needed along the eastern slopes of the remainder of the central Montana mountains for Friday night into Saturday. In these locations, wind gusts are more likely to be in the 40 to 50 mph range. Temperatures will moderate significantly across the region Friday through Saturday, reaching well above zero by Saturday night everywhere except for perhaps the more sheltered portions of the Milk River Valley in Hill and Blaine Counties. Sunday through next Thursday... Breezy conditions will continue into the day on Sunday as moderate upper level flow continues over the region. That said, blowing snow will not be as big of a concern on Sunday thanks to a combination of above freezing temperatures, weaker winds, and snow already being drifted. That said, there may still be some blowing snow across the plains later in the afternoon as winds pick up across the plains, but the warmer temperatures during the day should put a damper on this. As we head through the first half of the week, a series of minor weather systems will roll through the Pacific Northwest, which will bring some opportunities for some light mountain snowfall across Southwestern Montana, as well as colder temperatures and some elevated winds across the plains. Impacts from these systems should be localized to mountain passes and higher elevation communities, though some minor impacts could occur across the plains Tuesday night/Wednesday morning as some snow attempts to sneak into the area.
