The much anticipated Gulf Low is in the process of developing along
a frontal zone draped across the FL Straits extending just north of
the Yucatan. This system is expected to deepen over the next 24 hrs
while tracking northeast towards the FL Gulf Coast thanks to a
complex interaction between two upper-disturbances traversing the
Plains. Meanwhile, a strong Carolina surface high maintains a tight
pressure gradient over the region to support continued breezy east
to northeast winds, especially coastal and marine areas. Conditions
will deteriorate further as the Low makes its closest approach late
in the period via dangerous boating and surf. See the Marine section
for more details.

Light to moderate rain (heavy at times) arrives from south to north
beginning overnight offshore, then spreads inland by Saturday
afternoon. Instability appears minimal, so only have a mention of
isolated thunder at the Forgotten Coast and our adjacent marine
zones. The severe weather Marginal Risk notably shifted southeast in
the SPC's Day 2 Outlook to effectively exclude us outside of a tiny
sliver of Dixie County - valid starting 12Z Saturday. This change is
a result of a eastward trend in the latest track guidance. Further
adjustments are possible depending on the system's evolution. If any
severe weather were to materialize, it is likely to occur Saturday
night into the Sunday morning when the Low nears the coast. Isolated
tornadoes would be the primary threat. Localized flooding potential
also looks to hold off until then.

Tonight's low temperatures will be notably warmer compared to recent
days thanks to mostly cloudy skies. We are looking at 40s & 50s from
north to south. Widespread 60s are forecast for tomorrow's highs.
Considerable cloudiness coupled with these cool readings will make
for gloomy conditions to usher in the weekend.

.SHORT TERM...
(Saturday night through Sunday night)

Forecast models have started to come into better agreement with
the placement and track of the strong Gulf surface low that is
currently developing across the western Gulf of Mexico, and will
progress eastward from the western Gulf of Mexico tonight and on
Saturday. As this happens, three upper level shortwave troughs are
expected to merge over the region, which will allow the surface
low to strengthen as it passes south of the region. The current
forecast track takes the surface low through the nature coast to
Tampa overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning. This will
generally lead to moderate to heavy rainfall along and just
northwest of the surface low track, with 2-4 inches currently
expected, and locally heavier totals possible.

Along with the moderate to heavy rainfall, the deepening surface
low will lead to a strong pressure gradient across the region,
which will lead to hazardous marine conditions in and gusty inland
winds. With the track of the surface low remaining south of the
region, the severe weather threat is near zero as the warm sector
of the surface low will remain over the Peninsula of Florida. As
of right now, the heavy rainfall across the region over the
previous 3 weeks has lead to saturated soils areawide. With windy
conditions expected across the region in addition to more
rainfall, trees will be susceptible to being blown down. Marine
conditions will similarly remain elevated through the weekend,
with Gale conditions currently being observed, and near Storm
condition gusts possible Saturday night into Sunday.

.LONG TERM...
(Monday through Thursday)

By Monday morning, this weekends strong low pressure system will
be well north and east of the area across New England. The area
will start to clear out as a final upper level trough from the
northern jet stream is forecast to plunge equatorward towards the
Mid-Atlantic states on Monday night. As this happens, a surface
high pressure system is expected to settle into the Mid-
Mississippi valley on Monday on the heals of the upper level
trough. As this happens, a somewhat tight pressure gradient will
be present over the region, leading to another slightly breezy day
on Monday. By Tuesday, the surface high pressure will settle into
the Mid-Atlantic states, and remain quasi-stationary through the
end of the work week. This will lead to a relatively quiet and
benign work week with fair but cool weather across the region,
with high temperatures in the low 60s to upper 50s most days. Low
temperatures will generally be in the low to mid 30s starting
Monday night into Tuesday morning, but will slowly start to
increase into the upper 30s to low 40s by Thursday night.

VFR conditions will prevail for most of the period. Winds out of
the northeast to east-northeast will gust to around 20 kt at times
during the daylight hours, possibly lingering through the evening
at ECP. Late in the period, scattered showers are expected with
ceilings abruptly lowering to IFR at FL terminals and MVFR to the
north as low pressure begins to strengthen over the Gulf of
Mexico.

.MARINE...

A tightening pressure gradient and a developing area of low
pressure in the Gulf will lead to continued dangerous marine
conditions through the weekend with frequent gale force wind gusts
expected. As the low makes its closest approach late Saturday
into Saturday night, brief storm force wind gusts are possible.
Storm force wind gusts are quite rare in this area outside of
hurricane season and thunderstorms. As the low passes, winds and
seas will decrease, but advisory conditions are still expected
into Monday due to northwest winds behind the system.

.FIRE WEATHER...

A wet weekend precludes fire concerns. Breezy northeast winds
through Saturday night turn northerly on Sunday morning, then
northwesterly by the afternoon as a strong Gulf Low tracks near or
over Apalachee Bay through the North-Central FL peninsula. Cool and
dry conditions arrive in the system's wake come Monday.

.HYDROLOGY...

Over the last three weeks, several heavy rainfall events across
South Alabama, South Georgia, and the Florida Big Bend and Panhandle
have led to overly saturated soils. While mainstem rivers are at
normal levels, smaller basin rivers and streams are at above normal
flows. Moreover, the saturated soils in these areas are primed for
excessive runoff, which could lead to flash flooding, especially
across much of the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend.

A strong Gulf low will develop on Saturday and move rapidly toward
the region. Widespread moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall will
overspread the region. Even though this system will move fairly
quickly, the potential exists for very heavy rainfall to occur in a
short period of time, which could lead to flash flooding,
particularly in urban and poor drainage areas. The current track
of the low keeps the heaviest totals to the Big Bend of Florida,
where some locations could experience 2-4 inches of rain with
locally heavier totals throughout this event. Points west will
generally expect 1-2 inches of precipitation.

While mainstem rivers will respond to these rainfall amounts,
widespread river flooding is not likely, outside of the Ochlockonee
and Aucilla Rivers, where some threat of minor flooding exists.
However, the smaller basin rivers and creeks are more vulnerable,
like the Sopchoppy River in Wakulla County. These smaller basins
could easily see flooding if they receive the locally heavier rain
totals.

Model guidance has come into better agreement that the track of
the surface low will generally remain south of the region, which
will lead to more northeasterly winds across all zones through the
duration of the event. This will keep coastal flooding concerns to
a minimum, with only coastal Dixie county remaining under a
Coastal Flood Watch. All other coastal locations in Apalachee Bay
will have their coastal flood watch removed with this forecast
package.
