.SYNOPSIS...The active pattern continues, with a winter storm
impacting much of the region through this afternoon. Another winter
storm is expected to impact mainly central and southern Utah Monday
into Wednesday with yet another storm Thursday.

.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 12Z WEDNESDAY)...Utah remains in a
southwesterly flow aloft this morning as an upper trough continues
to make its way across the Great Basin. A moist airmass has resulted
in widespread precipitation across the area overnight, which
continues currently. The best dynamics remains across southwest
Utah, in proximity to the nose of an upper jet, vort max, and more
abundant moisture, and where favorable upslope flow serves to
enhance precipitation on southwest-facing slopes. Heavier
precipitation associated with this forcing has led to a lowering of
snow levels down to at least 5kft, as snow has been reported in the
Kanab area. Meanwhile, up north, snow levels remain higher as rain
has been the predominant precip type along the Wasatch Front. Even
KLGU, which has previously been mired in a stronger inversion, has
been reporting rain all night with temperatures just above freezing.
The trough axis will cross Utah later this morning and into the
afternoon hours. Behind the trough axis, west to northwest slopes
will become more favored for heavier precipitation. As deeper
moisture diminishes this afternoon, precipitation will become
increasingly confined to the mountains before tapering off through
the evening hours. Slightly cooler air will also move in behind the
trough axis. This should bring lowered snow levels, and Wasatch
Front valleys will have a better chance of seeing accumulating snow
at that point. That said, impacts should be relatively minor.
A very brief break in the weather is expected later tonight into
tomorrow morning before the next storm system arrives by late
tomorrow morning. Models are still settled on this evolving into a
closed low as it tracks across the area. Tomorrow through tomorrow
night, southwesterly flow ahead of it will continue to favor
southern Utah with the heaviest precipitation. With H7 temperature
around -6C snow levels across southern Utah may be similar to
today's storm. Moisture will wrap around the closed low, and
precipitation is then expected to fill in along the I-15 corridor as
the flow transitions to more northerly and colder air spreads in for
Tuesday through Tuesday night. This colder air will be enough to
bring snow down to the valley floors. The main area of uncertainly
lies in the northern extent of significant precipitation. The latest
models have trended the low a bit farther north compared to
yesterday's runs, and as such, precipitation is now a bit farther
north again. Of particular concern is a deformation axis which is
expected to develop on the northern periphery of the low which could
bring a band of heavier snow to portions of northern or central
Utah...depending on where it develops.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z Wednesday)...Weak energy rotating through Utah
on the western periphery of a departing trough is expected to keep
mountain snow showers lasting some of Wednesday morning. Shortwave
ridging will build to the west, with precipitation chances
decreasing for the afternoon. Ensembles have good agreement with the
ridge axis tracking across Utah Wednesday night into early Thursday.
Temperatures will be slightly cooler than normal.
An upstream trough will slide inland from the PacNW Wednesday,
tracking southeastward into Utah Thursday. Variance is largely with
where the trough and low pressure will track, with most GEFS members
with it digging into Nevada and most EPS members with more of a
direct push into Utah. This would impact where the best lift and
moisture would be. The scenario most GEFS members have would bring
better snow chances into southern Utah, while the other would bring
better snow chances further north. There is high confidence though
that this event will have almost all snow, with no precipitation
type challenge. The only places that would be an exception are lower
elevations of far southern Utah, where rain and snow would be
expected if precipitation occurs.
For Friday, precipitation chances are expected to diminish with dry
weather Saturday. Ensembles have good agreement on a ridge near the
Pacific coast later in the week. There is some uncertainty in
precisely where, which could result in anything from a drier
northwest flow or the chance for additional troughs to track into
southwest Wyoming and Utah after Saturday.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Light rain is expected through the morning. Snow
could mix in at times, but impacts are expected to be minimal, as
surface temperatures will be above freezing. MVFR or IFR ceilings
are expected through around 00Z. Visibility could decrease when snow
occurs, with the best chances for any snow from 18-00Z.
Precipitation chances will taper off through the evening, but low
clouds, especially around nearby mountains will last into Monday.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Rain and snow will last into
the evening for many locations. MVFR or IFR ceilings are expected
much of the day, with better chances for IFR or LIFR ceilings or
visibility where snow occurs. Precipitation chances will taper off
through the evening, but low clouds around nearby mountains will
last into Monday. Additional rain and snow will build into southern
Utah Monday morning.
