.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will maintain stable conditions area-wide
through today. After a brief period of inactive weather, the next
storm system arrives Saturday and will be followed by a series of
storms that will cross the area through much of the coming week.

.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 12Z MONDAY)...The large-scale pattern this
morning consists of a progressive ridge with its axis currently over
eastern Utah. Upstream, an amplified trough is located over the
eastern Pac near 130W with more shortwave disturbances noted farther
to the northwest. A solid plume of high clouds has spread into Utah,
while H7 temperatures remain on the warm side at between 0-1.5C.
With the overnight cloud cover in place, valley inversions have not
been able to strengthen much, except in the Bear River Valley, Uinta
Basin, and portions of the Wasatch Back where temperatures have been
colder than 15F.

As the ridge axis shifts east into Colorado this afternoon, expect
southwest flow to increase over Utah. This will maintain mild
conditions in most areas, except in the aforementioned areas where
inversions remain stronger. Clouds will gradually thicken later this
afternoon and through the night as the upstream troughiness
approaches.

The initial amplified trough upstream will eject inland this
evening, being kicked by a trailing disturbance. Both of these
features will trend weaker as they climb the leading edge of the
ridge tonight into tomorrow. While increased moisture will accompany
these features, weak lift will yield only minor amounts of
precipitation. Most of it will be associated with the trailing
disturbance tomorrow afternoon, as its track across Utah is more
favorable compared to the initial trough which will only graze
northwest Utah. As the airmass will remain mild, expect generally
valley rain and mountain snow, with precipitation coverage being
somewhat spotty.

A stronger upstream trough will then arrive tomorrow night into
Sunday. This larger trough will take on a more negative tilt as it
crosses Utah. This trough is associated with a modestly strong
atmospheric river into SoCal, but the flow pattern takes the core of
this moisture into Arizona rather than Utah for Sunday. As a result,
this storm will not have quite the robust moisture compared to
recent events. Southwest Utah, and particularly the Pine Valley
mountains and the area near Brian Head, will see the best
precipitation with this storm Saturday night into Sunday morning,
given its proximity to the deeper moisture of the atmospheric river,
track of the vort max through that area, and favorable upslope flow.
Widespread precipitation is also expected across the rest of the
area through the day Sunday. Behind the trough axis Sunday
afternoon, a transition to west-northwesterly flow will tend to
start favoring the Wasatch Mountains and I-15 corridor, with
precipitation lingering through Sunday night.

While mountains are expected to see close to a foot or more of snow,
valley accumulations are more uncertain. Although the airmass is not
particularly cold (-5 to -8C at H7 Saturday night through Sunday
morning), heavier precipitation will pull snow levels down. At the
moment, the NBM is suggesting primarily rain for most Wasatch Front
valleys through Sunday morning. However, wet bulb zero heights in
BUFR soundings for various deterministic models indicate snow by
Sunday morning. As such, there is a potential for underforecasting
of valley snow in the current forecast. There is better agreement in
a transition to primarily snow Sunday afternoon behind the trough
axis where colder air of -8 to -10C H7 temperatures spread into the
area.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z Monday)...As the previous trough departs,
ensembles and deterministic models are in good agreement on another
building into Utah Monday. There isn't expected to be much of a
break between these, as mountain snow will likely continue with
lighter snow rates. Valleys will have mostly dry conditions through
the morning. A similar track to the weekend trough is expected, with
the main differences of less atmospheric river moisture penetration
into Utah and this trough will be colder, cold enough for valley
snow most of the event. Flow will transition to southwest ahead of
the trough Monday, with valley temperatures slightly warmer than
freezing for most of Utah. The best chances for precipitation are
expected through the afternoon, especially during the evening and
into Tuesday, where temperatures will be cold enough for valley
snow. Snow is expected much of Tuesday throughout Utah's mountains.
Valley snow chances are expected to diminish through the day.

Variance by Wednesday builds in ensembles around shortwave ridging
between the aforementioned trough and another from the PacNW.
Slightly more than a third of members have enough of a break for
mostly dry conditions. Slightly more than half have scattered snow
showers lasting. A small number are somewhere between, with slight
chances for snow.

That trough is expected to build into Utah Thursday. This is
expected to bring better snow chances for southwest Wyoming and
northern Utah. By late in the week, ensembles are in good agreement
in the chance for a ridge to build near the Pacific coast. This
could transition better snow chances eastward, but there could be
shortwaves on the eastern periphery that track into Utah depending
on where the ridge is positioned.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Light southeast winds are expected through the
morning. Confidence is lower in the afternoon, but a transition to
northwest flow is expected. Southeast flow will prevail during the
evening. Winds will be light regardless of direction. Scattered to
broken clouds in VFR range are expected.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Patchy fog around KLGU will
result in MVFR visibility much of the morning, with IFR visibility
possible around sunrise. Light winds with scattered to broken clouds
in VFR range are expected through the day elsewhere.
