.UPDATE...Main mid-morning updates have included increasing winds
and gusts and lowering temps and snow levels in the Heber area as
well as the Cache Valley, as these areas continue to struggle to
mix warmer air down from aloft. Additionally, southerly
downsloping influence will warrant delaying the onset of
precipitation in the Salt Lake Valley until better forcing arrives
later this afternoon. Have issued a Wind Advisory for the Tooele
Valley starting at 2PM this afternoon and going through 5AM
Tuesday, where winds should easily gust to 45 mph in wind-prone
areas. Have noticed areas in Utah Valley already observe snow (see
latest Provo observation) so will need to lower snow levels here
as well for this afternoon. Previous discussion follows.

.SYNOPSIS...A moisture rich Pacific storm system will bring
periods of lower elevation valley rain and significant mountain
snow this afternoon through Wednesday. High pressure will
temporarily move in for the end of the work week before a series
of storm systems impact the area this weekend into early next
week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Thursday)...Shortwave ridging in place
over Utah and southwest Wyoming this morning in between the
exiting trough over Wyoming and a broader system currently
impacting the California coast. Still seeing a few pockets of
persistent fog and stratus, primarily over the Cache Valley and
Uinta Basin, but should see better mixing today with increasing
southerly flow.

The first wave from the California trough is on track to slide
into the Great Basin this afternoon, accompanied by ample moisture
from an atmospheric river. In a warm advection regime, the
southerly flow will draw this moisture into the forecast area,
allowing precipitation, mountain snow and rain for most valleys,
to increase. The orientation of the system and associated jet will
bring the best instability over northern Utah, with a secondary
pocket of heavier precipitation over southwest Utah in association
with a vort lobe with the system. This trough will then slide
across northern portions of the forecast area overnight, bringing
periods of heavy precipitation, especially for northern Utah.
Given the warm nature of this system, snow levels will remain on
the high side, primarily 6500 to 7500 feet, and snow ratios will
very much be on the low side.

A relative lull in precipitation is expected to follow during the
day Tuesday as this first feature exits and the larger main trough
takes its place over the Great Basin. This trough should push a
cold front west to east across Utah Tuesday night into Wednesday
morning, lowering slow levels and eventually shifting the flow to
a more northwest direction. With the leading edge of the trough
moving out Wednesday morning, focus of precipitation will again
shift to the higher terrain of northern Utah, with showers
tapering off during the afternoon.

QPF and snow amounts have gone up a bit with this package,
particularly over the Cottonwoods, in a compromise with WPC. Still
seeing an uncomfortably large amount of spread in QPF above the
50th percentile in the NBM, making things a bit more uncertain
than usual. Current NBM QPF has large bullseyes across portions of
the higher terrain of northern Utah, the Cottonwoods in
particular, with the first wave that seem unrealistic given the
weakening nature of this feature. Still, current forecast does
support some warning level impacts in portions of the northern
mountains, and if such model trends continue an upgrade in
headline would likely be warranted.

In addition to precipitation, this system brings the potential for
strong, gusty winds as well. Flow aloft/pressure gradient begins
to increase this afternoon, with an area of 50kt+ 700mb flow
expected over west central and southwest Utah, increasing even
further overnight into Tuesday morning. Limiting factors will be
mixing and lapse rates given the amount of moisture in the airmass
at this time. However, it seems increasingly likely the windprone
valleys of west central and southwest Utah will see some longer
lasting periods of wind gusts in excess of 40 mph this afternoon
through Tuesday morning, and have issued a Wind Advisory for these
areas.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z Thursday)...An exiting trough on Thursday will
be quickly replaced by a highly amplified ridge that will keep
conditions dry and temperatures above average through Saturday
before another west coast trough threatens the CWA with
precipitation and slightly cooler temperatures. There is good
agreement among ensemble members in regards to the ridge
characteristics, but the trough has some uncertainty associated with
it.

To start the period we will be on the upstream side of an exiting
trough noted with northwesterly flow aloft and the beginning of a
dry period as a ridge builds across the Great Basin. Northwesterly
flow will switch to a light southwesterly flow and allow for
temperatures to gradually increase 5-10 degrees above climo. This
will also allow a return of moisture ahead of the next trough that
is slated to move ashore the west coast late Friday.

The exact amplitude and phase of the aforementioned trough has yet
to fully materialize into one general solution amongst ensemble
members. Currently, there is about a 50/50 split amongst the members
with one half favoring a more southerly track with a slower easterly
trajectory and the other half favoring a more northerly track with a
quicker easterly progression. Guidance suggests a continued active
pattern beyond next weekend.

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions will prevail for the KSLC
terminal. Southerly winds will increase, gusting up to 25kts,
throughout the day. Rain moves into the area by the afternoon, but
CIGs should remain above VFR with scattered mountain obscuration.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Mostly VFR conditions will
prevail for all areas, except for KLGU where dense fog and LIFR
conditions will continue through ~17Z. Southerly winds will increase
throughout the day areawide as a storm approaches with rain
impacting northern terminals during the afternoon leading to
lowering CIGs and mountain obscuration. CIGs may approach MVFR
criteria for northern sites during the afternoon.
