.SYNOPSIS...A series of significant storm systems will impact the
area from late Sunday through Thursday. A rather unseasonably cold
system is then expected to follow for Friday into Saturday.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Thursday)...Active weather has returned
across Utah and southwest Wyoming, with the first in a series of
storm systems making its presence known this morning. In warm
advection/southerly flow, seeing areas of heaviest precip being
determined by a series of weak shortwaves moving through the flow
ahead of the main trough. One is bringing the focus of valley
rain/mountain snow to northern Utah with southern Utah seeing some
temporary subsidence behind the wave. High res models seem to
indicate that this will bring a relative lull in precipitation to
most locations as the morning goes on, though at least some snow
will continue over the northern Utah mountains.

The main trough is on track to nose its way in from the west by
early afternoon. This will allow precipitation to become more
widespread and transition to more of a convective regime, with the
heaviest precip over northern Utah likely becoming associated with
the cold front later in the afternoon. Over southern Utah, some
additional shortwave energy and positioning of the jet will allow
showers to become widespread once again. As the trough exits this
evening, precipitation will end from south to north, with some
snow showers possible over the higher terrain of northern Utah
through early evening. Going headlines cover the ongoing event
well.

Most areas will see a break or at least a lull in precipitation
Tuesday morning as focus shifts to the next approaching Pacific
storm system. This system looks to bring atmospheric river
moisture into southern Utah during the day Tuesday, allowing
valley rain/mountain snow to become more widespread there once
again as northern Utah stays relatively dry. As the low pivots
over California, the area of deep moisture is expected to spread
northward across the state, bringing a period of heavy
precipitation in southerly flow, particularly over southern Utah
where the deepest moisture and instability remain. This southerly
flow will also be om the increase late Tuesday/early Wednesday as
the low continues east, approaching southwest Utah at this time.
Winds look to become strong and gusty over a large portion of
southern Utah during this period and headlines may be necessary.

As the second trough and associated frontal boundary move
northeast through the area during the day, snow levels will lower
a bit and the flow will gain a bit of a westerly component.
However, the low appears to be weakening as it slides across, so
overall intensity of precipitation is expected to decline during
this period, with the focus of precip increasingly shifting to the
mountains of northern Utah.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z Thursday)...The long-term period begins with
lingering showers from the mid-week storm, followed by a series of
shortwave troughs, thereby continuing the active pattern.
Temperatures 20-25 degrees below normal are likely starting Friday
and continuing through the weekend. Models are trending towards
warmer and wetter weather early next week.

While the bulk of precipitation will be over by Thursday morning,
lingering precipitation is expected across much of the forecast area
and especially across higher terrain. There is great agreement among
ensemble members in the overall pattern, with the mid-level trough
axis pushing past Utah by 12z Thursday. Despite H7 temperatures near
-10C (south) to -12C (north), valley rain is more likely than
snow on Thursday afternoon. The 25th-75th percentiles for snow
level, however, still range over a 700ft difference (4200-4900ft
northern Utah, 4900-5500ft southern Utah) and thus there is still a
low (10%) chance of snow across all valley locations except Lower
Washington County. Rain will likely transition to snow overnight
into Friday.

The rest of the long-term is characterized by overall zonal flow
with embedded shortwave troughs. The first is expected on Friday,
with precipitation chances increasing in the afternoon. Ensembles
suggest this feature brings in some anomalously cold air, with H7
temperatures nearing -12C to -17C (ensemble 25th-75th percentile
spread) across northern Utah, which would rival the minimum for late
March...and as you can see, there is some question as to how cold
the air mass above us actually gets. This is also reflected in
probabilistic snow level, with a 2000ft difference between the 25th
and 75th percentiles. Even so, with this uncertainty in snow level,
the air mass will be cold enough that we can expect valley snow and
a low (10%) likelihood of rain through the weekend. Lower Washington
County will stay as rain.

Another shortwave trough on Saturday will again bring a chance of
precipitation and further colder temperatures to the area. With a
vorticity lobe crossing southern Utah Saturday afternoon, QPF is
slightly favored more towards southern Utah. Overall with these two
shortwave troughs, QPF is likely to remain below 1" in the mountains
and below 0.5" in valleys.

Uncertainty in the overall pattern increases late in the weekend,
but models certainly appear to favor an active pattern, with an
increase in temperatures and PWATs favored, too.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Scattered rain showers will continue, with
potential for MVFR CIGs most likely between 13-15z. Otherwise, CIGs
near 4000-5000ft AGL until ~15-16z. A frontal passage will bring a
period of westerly crosswinds with gusts to 20kts beginning around
20-21z, lasting until ~00z. There is a 15% chance of thunder along
this front, with a few isolated rain showers through 03z.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Scattered showers will
continue through the morning and early afternoon, with MVFR to IFR
CIGs possible within showers. Low elevation areas will see rain,
with higher elevation areas (e.g. KEVW, KHCR, KBCE) seeing snow and
potentially MVFR to IFR VIS. A frontal passage will bring a period
of gusty westerly to northwesterly flow, another band of showers,
and a 15% likelihood of thunder. This front will reach KENV around
17-18z, the Wasatch Front by 20-22z, and KCDC by 23-00z.
