.SYNOPSIS...A cold front will continue to push south and east
through the area through the remainder of the evening, with snow
tapering off overnight for many areas. Areas of strong winds are
expected to develop across portions of northern, west-central,
and southern Utah tonight through tomorrow as the storm system
departs the region. High pressure rebuilds over the eastern Great
Basin by Thursday, with another potential storm system lined up
for late this weekend/ early next week.

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/5AM Thursday)...Afternoon water vapor
satellite imagery reveals a very evident area of stout lift over
the southern half of Utah, coincident with a cold frontal boundary
that has been producing fairly widespread moderate to heavy
snowfall across central and southern Utah. The base of the
associated trough appears to already be rounding the southern
Great Basin, which will help the progression of the aforementioned
frontal boundary. The moderate to heavy snowfall tied to the
boundary will continue to push eastward into the Glen Canyon
National Recreation area this evening. Behind this boundary,
widespread areas of light stratiform snowfall are noted on radar.
Overall, expecting this area of light snowfall to continue across
southern and central Utah through the evening hours, eventually
shifting eastward / dissipating as subsidence increases into
tomorrow morning. That said, there will be enough low level
moisture and flow perpendicular to terrain to keep light mountain
snowfall going through at least Wednesday afternoon for portions
of central and southern Utah

For northern Utah, areas of light snow showers remain in place as
the mid-level instability axis moves through this portion of the
forecast area. While daytime heating is still a thing, expect
these isolated to scattered snow showers to continue. Once daytime
heating is lost, nearly all chances for snowfall in northern Utah/
southwest WY will diminish.

The bigger story shifts toward the wind forecast as we head into
the early morning hours tomorrow for multiple areas across Utah.
While the base of the trough makes its way through southern Utah,
an easterly component to the 700mb flow will increase across
northern Utah where around 30-35kts of cross barrier flow are
noted on the deterministic GFS between about 2AM and 5AM.
Additionally, colder H7 temperatures to the east of the terrain
will also help to promote low level cold air advection. This alone
raises the concern for enhanced canyon winds in Salt Lake, Davis,
and Weber County. Have maintained existing wind advisories for
these areas, but have kept wind forecasts on the lower end of
advisory because we do lack a substantial surface pressure
gradient between southwest WY and Ogden (which really helps to
force the winds through the terrain). There is potential for this
wind forecast to flop if a near surface stable layer develops
overnight.

For the western portions of Utah, model guidance continues to
support strong northerly 700mb flow during the day tomorrow. This,
combined with the well mixed post-frontal atmosphere and a modest
surface pressure gradient will help areas in the western portions
of the state see wind gusts around the 45 mph mark. Have issued a
wind advisory for west-central Utah from 5AM to 5PM tomorrow, with
the biggest impact being northerly cross winds on east-west
oriented routes (i.e. US-50/US-6 from Santaquin through the UT/NV
border).

Lastly, the strong northerly component to the 700mb flow tomorrow
will be in alignment with the I-15 corridor, helping to force
stronger winds through this section of the interstate between
Cedar City and St. George. Combined with the aforementioned
surface pressure gradient, thinking that we'll manage to see wind
gusts exceed the 45 mph mark, but fall short of 60 mph. Have
upgraded the existing High Wind Watch to a Wind Advisory for lower
Washington County, with the greatest impacts expected near Leeds,
Hurricane, and Toquerville. These winds are expected to increase
in speed overnight tonight, persisting through much of the day
tomorrow, then diminishing as we head into the evening hours.

The cold airmass will remain in place through Thursday morning,
meaning that some of the coldest temperatures of the week are
likely to be observed for much of the forecast area.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z/5AM Thursday)...A cold, dry northerly flow
will be in place across southwest Wyoming and Utah Thursday morning.
Models are in good agreement on a closed low entering the plains,
while upstream ridging builds into the PacNW. With a mostly clear
night, recent snow, and light winds, temperatures Thursday morning
will likely be the coldest of the week. Forecast lows are below zero
for southwest Wyoming, the Cache Valley, Bear River Valley, and for
Bryce Canyon. Almost all of Utah that doesn't get below zero will
dip into the single digits or teens.

There is high confidence that the aforementioned ridge will track
into Utah Thursday, with the axis crossing Friday morning. Although
it is the very end of the season, valley inversions will establish,
likely strongest in the Cache Valley and Uinta Basin.

Ensembles are in good agreement with a closed low breaking off near
the California coast Friday. The general agreement is that it will
linger off the coast into next week, resulting in a split flow for
the southwest. Locally, that will allow for largely dry conditions
through Saturday as temperatures warm closer to normal.

A grazing shortwave trough to the northeast Sunday could bring light
snow to southwest Wyoming and far northern Utah. EPS and GEFS
members are very light on amounts, even for the mountains, as
dynamics and moisture are expected to be limited.

Better chances for snow are expected into next week, but there is
more variance within ensemble guidance and more uncertainty on
details. Slightly more than 50% of ensemble members bring a longwave
trough into Utah Monday. More members bring the trough in Tuesday,
with around 75% of all members with better forcing and moisture
either Monday or Tuesday. An alternate scenario, with around 25% of
members, have the longwave trough digging further to the east.

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions expected. Isolated snow showers
possible until ~06Z. Brief drops in visibility will be possible if a
snow shower is overhead. Northwest winds expected for TAF period.
There is a chance that gusty northeast winds will be possible
overnight. These gusty northwest to northeast winds are expected to
subside by mid-morning. Mountain obscuration possible through
Wednesday morning.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Gusty northwest to northeast
winds expected, with the strongest gusts occurring in the early to
mid-morning hours on Wednesday. Light snow showers possible in
northern Utah and southwest Wyoming through the early evening.
Southern and eastern Utah will see snow into the early morning
hours. Lowered flight categories are expected when snow is occurring
due to lowered visibilities and CIGS.
