.SYNOPSIS...An upper level weather system will impact northern
Utah and southwest Wyoming through Saturday morning. A cold front
will drop south through the area Sunday through Sunday night,
followed by much colder air for early next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/5AM Tuesday)...Largely holding steady on
big-picture impacts across the forecast area for this upcoming
winter storm, with increased confidence for impacts in some areas
and a few challenging nuances remaining in others. Expect winter
weather to spread from the northern border early tonight through
much of the northern half of the state and southwest Wyoming.
Water vapor imagery shows our developing longwave trough of
concern beginning to sag south across the US/Canada border, with
some disorganized shortwave energy rippling through overhead this
evening. Showers associated with this advance feature will
continue to fill in overnight, especially over the mountains and
along the Idaho border. As the western end of the trough
elongates, it is expected to cut off and head near due south along
the California coast, with the more northern/eastern feature
continuing to progress eastward. The result, a weakening jet with
stretching of the flow overhead and less-than-favorable dynamics
will be pitted against a potentially strengthening area of
baroclinicity pushing southward ahead of a truly cold airmass from
interior Canada.
Some concern that models may be overzealous with lift along the
baroclinic zone and it may become frontolytic as it moves through
northern Utah remains, though generally have held steady on QPFs
and current forecast amounts reflect perhaps more bullish
outcomes. Cold H7 temps coupled with the onset of heaviest
precipitation early Sunday morning should lead to precipitation
falling as snow throughout the Wasatch Front and other northern
valleys. Greater totals are expected further north in the Cache
and from the Idaho border through Ogden where precipitation is
expected to begin earlier and linger longer, though a small
southward shift in this initial band could bring totals up all the
way through North Salt Lake. Northern mountains get little
reprieve, as steady snowfall is already being observed in many
areas and only expected to increase by sunrise.
Focus shifts towards the central valleys and southern I-15
corridor, as well as the southern mountains, Sunday evening and
overnight into Monday as models have a strengthening fragment of
the initial cold front continuing to and through Washington
county. In its path, a general 2-5 inches can be expected along
I-15 and neighboring communities, potentially greater totals at
the higher roadway summits. Cedar City poised to do well, and the
Brian Head area yet again could easily see a foot of low density
snowfall. Greater uncertainty heading south into lower Washington
County and St. George, as unfavorable northerly flow downsloping
into the valley should undercut precipitation totals and lead to
some degree of warming. Still, looking at snow levels 3-4kft
presenting the possibility of a rain/snow mix and up to a half
inch of accumulating snowfall, primarily on grassy surfaces, as of
the current forecast.
A solid shot of some of the coldest, if not the coldest, air of
the season filters into the forecast area behind this north-to-
south progressing boundary. With it, the enhanced gradient could
bump near-surface winds across Box Elder county and portions of
I-80 well in excess of 45 mph out of the north Sunday night
through Monday morning. In addition to presenting a travel hazard,
these winds, paired with bitterly cold air (potentially sub-zero
ambient temperatures), will drive widespread wind chill concerns,
with some areas seeing ambient temperatures as low as -30F. While
winds will be lighter to the east, other valley locations in
northern Utah will see sufficiently cold minimum temperatures that
even light winds will produce near-extreme wind chills of -15 to
-30F. Lesser concerns for these extremes along the Wasatch Front,
but by no means warm, as wind chills fall to near zero.
While precipitation is largely a wrap by Monday evening, cold air
sticks around, and the decreased winds and clearing skies as the
column thoroughly dries out will lead to a serious drop in
temperatures for Monday night through Tuesday morning. Many
valleys will experience subzero min temps, while much of the
Wasatch Front sees low single digits. Southern Utah unlikely to be
spared as the coldest air continues to stream in, falling into
the single digits for Cedar City, low 20s in lower Washington
county, and teens across the Grand Staircase.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z/5AM Tuesday)...Our approaching storm will be
exiting southern Utah to begin the period Tuesday morning.
Afterwards, a quiet period sets up for the remainder of the week as
a ridge builds into the Great Basin region with temperatures
remaining below average. Given likelihood of valley snowpack, there
is the potential for inversions to build throughout valley
locations. These inversions could be relatively short-lived as
guidance is hinting at a return to an active pattern towards the end
of the week that would mix out valley locations, however there is
still large uncertainty regarding this pattern shift.
A very cold continental polar airmass follows our next storm and
will be situated over the intermountain west by Tuesday. This
airmass will be very dry, and it will quickly disperse any remaining
moisture across southern Utah out of the area by Tuesday afternoon.
Even though skies will clear on Tuesday, temperatures across the
region will remain 10-20 degrees below normal. Temperatures will
increase slightly on Wednesday, but northerly flow will keep
temperatures 10-15 degrees below normal.
A ridge builds into the region towards the latter half of the week.
Guidance begins to diverge thereafter with 67% of members holding
onto the ridge longer and the remaining 33% of members introducing
shortwaves into northern Utah. Depending on which scenario plays out
will influence the residence time of any potential inversions as
well as valley temperatures. A smaller 52% of members keep this
ridging through the weekend. Regardless, anticipate temperatures to
gradually increase throughout the week but staying below average.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Light west-northwest winds expected to last until
~01Z when a shift to southeast winds takes place. These southeast
winds will switch to northwest winds as a cold front moves through
the area between 13Z and 16Z. CIGS during this period will be
between 6kft and 8kft. Snow showers expected to start around 15Z and
last through much of the day. CIGS will drop to be between 2kft and
4kft. MVFR conditions likely with a 20% chance of seeing IFR, which
would be due to decreasing visibilities from the snow. Mountain
obscuration possible throughout TAF period.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Scattered snow showers will
continue to be possible across northern Utah and southwest Wyoming
through the evening. Main snow band moves north to south across the
CWA, effecting the northern portion of the CWA through Sunday
afternoon. For central and southern Utah snow begins between mid to
late afternoon Sunday and persists into the overnight hours. Mainly
light and variable winds, except for southwest Wyoming, which has
gusty southwesterly winds. These winds are expected to last until a
cold front arrives and switches winds to be northerly. Lowered
flight categories will be likely due to the lowered visibilities and
lowered CIGS from the snow.
