Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Shreveport LA 530 PM CST Sat Jan 28 2023 ...New AVIATION... .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Sunday Night) Issued at 215 PM CST Sat Jan 28 2023 Low level clouds and light rain continue to move across the FA this afternoon as the sfc low responsible for our next cold front begins to depart the Rockies. An 850mb low level jet continues to surge overhead as PWAT values increase as moisture returns slowly to the Four State Region. Elevated showers with a few embedded thunderstorms will become more favorable over the course of the evening and into the overnight hours, before stronger storms develop ahead of the cold front by Sunday afternoon/evening. As a result, lows this evening will trend similar in value to what our temperatures have been through the afternoon. Lows in the mid to upper 50s, near 60 degrees expected as temperatures warm up more through the afternoon tomorrow behind the warm front and ahead of the boundary to the NW which will drop temperatures across NW zones through the late afternoon and evening meaning daytime highs may hit earlier in the day as the front approaches, and decrease through the late afternoon for some. With the surge in low-level flow overnight and through the morning on Sunday, ultimately stalling, this will allow for an environment for storms to develop ahead of the boundary, some potentially on the stronger side across the southern zones as a Day 2 Marginal Risk is in play. With somewhat respectable mid- level lapse rates and elevated instability present early on Sunday, the opportunity presents itself for some hail to be associated with any storms that do develop with a low end tornado risk present across extreme southern zones if the cap can erode further south by the late afternoon/evening initiating sfc based thunderstorms. This explains the low end threat present. For now, the majority of the activity looks to be mainly elevated as MUCAPE overspreads the region. A cluster of showers and storms should congeal by the evening on Sunday as the boundary starts to push east, ultimately being out of the region by early Monday morning. Temperatures will only fall so much overnight Sunday and into Monday so a gradient separating mid to upper 30s, 40s and low 50s should be present across the region by Monday morning with the coldest values across NW zones while warmest remain in the SE. /53/ && .LONG TERM... (Monday through next Friday) Issued at 215 PM CST Sat Jan 28 2023 A prolonged active long term period continues to take shape for the upcoming new work week, as an active SW flow pattern aloft will persist across the Srn Plains and Lower MS Valley. While dry conditions are expected Monday morning in wake of the cold fropa that will exit the region early Monday into extreme SE TX/S LA, overrunning is expected to increase atop this shallow cold air dome during the afternoon as perturbations shift NE, with increasing ascent and isentropic forcing leading to scattered -SHRA increasing across portions of ECntrl TX into WCntrl LA. Did expand low chance and slight chance pops over E TX/Cntrl LA Monday afternoon, with - SHRA expected to become more numerous across the area Monday night. Meanwhile, weak sfc pressure rises ahead of Canadian high pressure building SE into the Cntrl Plains and into the Mid MS Valley will result in continued weak cold advection seeping S through the area Monday night, although the potential for the critical freezing temps should remain mostly NNW of the region, with the Nrn sections of Mc Curtain County OK possibly seeing a brief window of a -RA/-FZRA mix early Tuesday. No significant ice accumulations are expected though as temps climb back above freezing shortly after daybreak Tuesday, with periods of a cold RA expected across the region where weak convergence continues along the W-E oriented H850 trough. Should not see much warming during the day given the rains and continued weak cold advection, which will result in even colder temps across much of the area Tuesday night. With overrunning again persisting Tuesday night, the extensive rains should result in warmer air atop this cold air mass to mix down to the ground, with the NBM again having trended slightly warmer than the previous forecast in keeping temps just above freezing across SE OK/Nrn sections of SW AR. While some patchy -FZRA can not be ruled out, any theat for icing should again be minimal for these Nrn zones, before temps are able to climb during the day Wednesday. Areas of rain will again continue over much of the region Wednesday, being driven by additional perturbations in the SW flow, ahead of a closed low that will drift ESE across Nrn Old MX/Srn AZ from the CA coast. General consensus amongst the 12Z progs indicates that the low's track has shifted a bit farther S than previous runs, which should result in a warm front developing along the TX/LA coasts Wednesday and lifting N into SE TX/Srn and Cntrl LA during the afternoon. Thus, convection should deepen and become more widespread N of this bndry across E TX/N LA into Srn AR, continuing through Wednesday night before gradually shifting SE Thursday afternoon and evening. Thus, have continued likely and categorical pops areawide through this time frame, before drier air aloft begins to entrain E just ahead of the upper low center over N TX. With the longer duration of the rains, storm total QPF have also increased, with widespread 2-4+ inches expected over much of the region. While these rains will be spread out over time, some isolated flooding can't be ruled out Wednesday through Thursday morning given the saturated grounds, which will ultimately lead to additional rises/new flooding on some of the area waterways. Given the farther Swd track of the low, the progs also are in agreement with additional -SHRA developing in VC of the low center Thursday night across much of the area, before the rain and attendant clod cover finally begins to diminish from W to E Friday. Have expanded slight chance pops farther W into SW AR/Wrn LA Friday given the slower trend with the low, with the prospect of milder and drier conditions returning to the area for next weekend. 15 && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 523 PM CST Sat Jan 28 2023 For the 29/00Z TAFs, scattered showers persist across ArkLaTex airspace and will continue through the course of this TAF period. Conditions will primarily consist of -RA, but occasional heavier TSRA is possible, resulting in deterioration to MVFR VIS. Simultaneously, MVFR with occasional IFR CIGs will be present throughout. Southerly winds will continue at sustained speeds of 15 to 20 kts, becoming lighter and shifting to northerly after 29/12Z as the frontal boundary enter the region from the northwest. While increasing showers will be possible across the region today and tonight, an isolated thunderstorm could also occur with this activity. However, no strong to severe thunderstorms are expected through tonight. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday. Showers with embedded thunderstorms will become more widespread Sunday and Sunday Night in advance of a strong cold front that will move into the region during this timeframe. Look for increasing rain chances once again late in the day Monday with those rain chances remaining high through at least Thursday across most of the Four State Region. Several days of widespread rainfall will result in several inches of rain during much of next week across the Four State Region. This will result in additional rises on area lakes and rivers along with the possibility of flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas.
