Bottom line up front...we could be on the cusp of making weather
history this weekend with all-time record high temperatures in
grave jeopardy across our East Texas and North Louisiana primary
climate locations. For reference, those numbers are listed below.
SHV: 110 - 08/18/1909
MLU: 109 - 07/26/1918
TXK: 117 - 08/10/1936
ELD: 112 - 08/31/2000
TYR: 110 - 08/03/2011
GGG: 113 - 08/10/1936
LFK: 110 - 09/04/2000
At this point in the summer, we are certainly accustomed to what
is typically our hottest stretch of days all year. Unfortunately,
this summer has grossly overachieved to put it mildly with each
new day seeming to eclipse the day before on the mercury scale.
Using that metric along with other considerations owing to the
strength of the upper-level ridge, I have nudged max temperatures
a degree or two higher across the board for today and Sunday. If
these numbers come to bear, we will tie the all-time record highs
at Shreveport, Tyler and Lufkin which all stand at 110 degrees.
Monroe will likely come very close as well, but current forecast
numbers are just shy of the all-time record high there. Excessive
heat warning headlines have been extended through Sunday with more
likely to follow.
I just can't emphasize enough the strength and durability of this
ridge, as it continues to carve out even more real estate across
the nation's heartland through this weekend. Not to mention, it
will only further strengthen in the process with H500 heights of
600 dam across KS/MO by Sunday. I wish I could say there was some
light at the end of the tunnel as we move into the back third of
August, but that just doesn't appear to be the case for now. Fire
danger and drought will continue as part of our daily lexicon for
the foreseeable future as the triple-digit heat extends into next
week as noted below.

The phrase "heat exhaustion" usually refers to a type of heat-
related illness which can result from overexposure and lack of
sufficient hydration. For the purposes of this long-term forecast, I
would also supply the definition, "a state of being exhausted with
the endless heat in the forecast for the ArkLaTex."
Indeed, and with great regret, I must join my colleagues in
reporting little to no change from the most recent rounds of long
term forecasts. In fact, based on the latest model runs, it is
looking like we stand a decent chance of having more days this month
with highs exceeding the century mark than without before all is
said and done.
As the weekend concludes and the new work week commences, the vast
upper level ridge responsible for this prolonged heat wave will
remain- to the surprise of hopefully nobody- entrenched firmly in
place. In truth, the forecast for the coming week can be fairly
concisely summed up as follows: dry conditions will prevail as high
temperatures soar into the triple-digits every afternoon, trending
to their warmest values during the long term period on Thursday
afternoon. Models continue to struggle with just how extreme the
heat will be, but similar conditions to the brutal heat of this
weekend look quite likely to return to much of the area, with little
to no cooling trend evident through the end of the forecast period.
Our faint and fading hope for any precipitation next week is
increasingly limited in areal coverage, with only slight chance PoPs
at best making their way into the southwestern corners of the SHV
CWA during the afternoon hours Tuesday and Thursday, impacting Lufkin
and Toledo Bend, and perhaps Nacogdoches. I would not recommend
holding out hope for much, if any significant precip, however. While
NHC forecasts are increasing in confidence for a tropical wave to
become organized in the western Gulf during the week, any potential
impacts to the CWA depend on the position of the upper level ridge,
and with each subsequent forecast, the high looks reluctant to budge
enough to permit any intrusions into the ArkLaTex beyond the
aforementioned limited chances in deep east Texas, thus it looks to
remain quiet and very dry. The same appears true for the potential
impacts of any sea breeze regime which may try to develop.
