.SYNOPSIS...
A storm approaching from the west tonight will bring light rain
to the area during the day Saturday, which will become heavy at
times late Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. Scattered
showers will linger into Sunday morning. A second storm will
bring more rain and mountain snow Monday and Tuesday. Cool and
dry weather is forecast next Wednesday through Friday.

EVENING UPDATE...
Patchy fog has started to develop along the
coast this evening. Expect patchy and intermittent fog, which will
be locally dense, to continue tonight in the coastal areas and
possibly into the far western valleys of San Diego County.
Otherwise plenty of high clouds are moving in ahead of the next
storm system, which is currently producing showers across central
and northern California. Adjustments were made to the timing of
the wind advisories and the Winter Storm Watch was limited to
areas above 5000 ft. The Flood Watch remains as-is. Aside from the
addition of fog tonight, the forecast remains on track.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...
Key Message: A pair of Pacific storm systems will bring
widespread rain, possibly heavy at times, and mountain snow, from
Saturday night through Monday night, along with periods of strong
winds.

A pair of robust Pacific storm systems with associated atmospheric
rivers will impact SoCal Saturday through early Tuesday. The
forecast remains high confidence as the high resolution guidance
shows some moderate IVT values of 400 to 500 kg/m/s. The first
round of heavier precipitation is expected late Saturday afternoon
into Saturday night, followed by a break during the day Sunday.
Another storm and Atmospheric River moves through Sunday night
into early Monday morning. Showers will continue behind the main
band of rain during the day Monday into Tuesday morning, tapering
off Tuesday afternoon.

Total rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches for coastal and valley
areas throughout the period are expected, with 2 to 6 inches in
the mountains, highest along the south and southwest facing
coastal slopes, and desert areas mainly less than one-half inch.
Rain rates of one-half inch per hour will be possible with each
system, especially Saturday evening, with isolated rates higher
along the coastal slopes. For this reason a flood watch was issued
for the mountains, coast and valley areas.

Snowfall amounts will be relegated to locations above 7000 feet
until the colder air arrives Saturday night, and especially
Sunday night through Monday night, when snow levels will lower to
around 5000 feet. Snow levels may be as low as 4000-4500 ft Monday
night into Tuesday morning as precipitation comes to an end, so
only light accumulations are expected at these elevations. A
Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for the mountains above 5000
ft.

The trough edges east Tuesday night. Weak transitory ridging
follows for Wednesday, then another trough moves inland to the
north Thursday and Friday. This will maintain cool and mostly dry
weather. Gusty onshore winds may develop again Thursday with the
passage of the trough, followed by offshore flow Friday as surface
high pressure sets up over the Great Basin behind the departing
trough.

140430Z...Coast/Valleys/Mountains...SCT-BKN high clouds AOA 15000 ft
MSL through this evening. Patchy low clouds at times through 14z
Sat, with bases around 1000 FT MSL. Rain showers expected after 15Z
Sat moving northwest to southeast. Another round of more widespread
rain, again moving from northwest to southeast, expected after 21Z
Sat. BKN-OVC low to mid level clouds expected through much of the
day Sat, with variable bases 1500-5000 ft MSL. Lower bases are
expected during showers. Areas of vis reductions to 1-3 SM during
showers and where clouds intersect higher coastal terrain. South-
southwest winds are expected to prevail for much of the day Sat.

Mountains/Deserts... SCT-BKN high clouds AOA 15000 ft MSL through
Saturday. Gusty south-southwest winds are expected after 18Z Sat.
Peak gusts of 50-60 kt expected over the mountains and on desert
mountain slopes. LLWS and mod/strong up/downdrafts  expected over
and east of the mountains. SHRA/SHSN possible after 15Z Sat,
starting in the San Bernardino mtns spreading south into the
Riverside and San Diego mtns through the afternoon and overnight.
Areas of VIS reductions down to 1-3 SM in areas of showers and where
clouds intersect terrain.

.MARINE...
A large long-period west swell will generate combined seas of 7-11
feet through Saturday, with the highest seas occurring south of San
Clemente Island. Southwest to west winds of 15-20 kt with gusts to
25 kt and rough seas will develop Saturday evening through Sunday.
Seas and winds decrease somewhat Sunday evening, then increase again
Monday and Tuesday as another storm and large west swell move in.
Conditions will be hazardous for small craft at times through
Tuesday.

.BEACHES...
A long-period west swell from 280 degrees will continue to generate
surf of 8-12 feet in San Diego County and 6-10 feet with local sets
to 12 feet in Orange County through Saturday. Surf may be large
enough to produce minor coastal flooding during high tides,
especially in San Diego County. Coastal Flood and High Surf
Advisories have been issued and can be referenced for more details.
A slight decrease in surf is expected Sunday and Monday. Another
large west swell is forecast to arrive early Tuesday and will likely
produce additional high surf.
